If it is proved true, this man deserves the Nobel Prize.

    airtight non-deformable container:
Two things would happen (1) you create a vacuum in the higher container
    (2) you compress the air in the lower container. So it would work until the difference in potential due to gravity is no longer large enough to overcome the vacuum/pressure difference. So it would reach equilibrium sooner than an open container

    airless non-deformable container:
boyle's law p1v1 = p2v2, The water would expand to fill the void in the container (?)

You can still drink from a straw in space, if you want to consider that a siphon. Both containers have to be closed, and the main driver will be a pressure difference. But if the containers are open, you need gravity.

    I think.

If he's such a great physicist, why did he have to look up "siphon" in the dictionary? Multiple times? ;)

What the hell do you think causes air pressure?

It's gravity pulling down on the air molecules or a mechanical force of expanding a volume of a space. So it only matters at what point on the action/reaction chain you want to define it.

The empty space of a vacuum makes a siphon work or the Big Bang makes siphons work or Entropy makes siphons work or God makes siphons work.

One thing's for certain... a plane can in fact take off from a conveyor belt.
