I know how to "FIX" American Idol. Take it off the air. Destroy all videos and DVD's of the performances. And pretend it never happened.
Scott is who we are discussing? HOW ABOUT FEDEROV that guy is terrible. At least Scott could go in and really blow up a karoke bar, Anthony would be the second or third best singer on any karoke night in the country. I think he gets the pity/geek vote.
One of those 2 is gone today. I don't like the concept either Jeff, but at least if it's going to be on, wouldn't you want guys like Bo Bice to win? He's got 15 guitars, been busted for cocaine and mar1juana, owns the stage, etc. He's a rockstar without the fame.
I agree.... Gotta give it up for Bo. AB - I think Federov sucked too. He should have been gone weeks ago......
Scott and Federov are both terrible. I think the country singing chick is the favorite, so it'd be pretty funny to see her get kicked off tonight.
American Karaoke is one of the worst things to happen to the music industry in a long time. They bring up singers to sing other people's music and then try to turn them into "artists" - a complete and total oxymoron. At least in things like Nashville Star, they are required to write their own music and many of them play instruments. This is just a singing contest. It doesn't make them good artists. It doesn't make them worthy of record deals. It's just a good way for the industry to make money without any possible risk because the singers are already popular when they release their first records. Then, if they start to suck, they get dropped and no one cares. End of story. The label makes a buttload of money with zero risk instead of taking a chance on an artist that might actually contribute something to the world of music. It sucks no matter how you slice it.
It was mentioned on the radio this morning the site was taken down. I'm sure Fox's lawyers threatened to sue.
I disagree. There are many talented vocalists out there. I feel singing is a talent, and a truly great singer is worthy of a contract. I'll take any American Idol winner over a pre-hyped Brittney Spears, Justin Timberlake, or Ashlee Simpson any day of the week, and twice on Sundays. It would be a good idea to make them write at least one song during the show. Maybe next year.
This is all he-said, she-said, but I was stuck in a hospital for a couple days, and a girl from John Stevens' high school was in the waiting room a couple days, and every time I'd turn it to American Idol, she kept saying how the night that he got voted off, everyone from their school was calling in, and nobody got through. She said that every other time, nearly all of them got through. So, if the girl is telling the truth, and the lines were busy all night, wouldn't it make sense that he wouldn't be in the bottom 3.....? In my opinion, that kid was one of the best on the show last year, and he got screwed over by "gimmick nights", much like our beloved Stevie Francis in the dunk contest.
There is a significant difference between a developed, talented singer and someone who wins a popularity contest. Sarah Vaughn was a singer. Billie Holiday was a singer. Barbara Streisand, Al Green, Frank Sinatra, hell, even Celine Dion...those were/are singers. They had talent, range and were developed talent honing their crafts the same way all other artists do. These are singers who sign up for a contest and, six months later, they are superstars. They paid no dues. They spent no time slaving over their efforts. They just walk in the studio and sing to pre-recorded songs made up for them. Big freakin' deal. That doesn't take talent.
I'm not a fan of American Idol, or the singers that it produces, but mainstream music today is largely image-created anyway. The end result is not that the best musical talent gets on the air. There are exceptions, but it's a very artificial and self-perpetuating industry. I don't really think that, in that climate, you can say that these guys have done less dues-paying than Britney Spears or Mariah Carey. Ashlea Simpson sells millions of albums, and she's absolutely talentless. At least the people on American Idol have to demonstrate their vocal range a few times and beat out other wannabes.
Then the current music industry is to blame. American idol seems like an extension rather than the cause. For example, Christina Aguilera didn't really put in her dues, but I doubt anyone would argue that she is a truly talented singer. Hell, I've still yet to figure out the fascination that is Sheryl Crow, and she's been around for 15 years.
I did a little googling just now, here's what I found out: Bo Bice plays piano, guitar, bass, sax, harmonica and he's a song writer as well. Look at who he's worked with: I'm trying to tell you Jeff, this guy didn't just decide "Hey, I want to be a singer" and went on the show. He's 29 and has been performing for years. Like I said, if something like American Idol is going to exist, it should be won by guys like Bo Bice.
I saw a special on Christina Aguilera and she tried like hell to get picked up, before Mickey Mouse Club. Perhaps a better example would be Ashlee Simpson. No wait. She ugly and can't sing and got in because of her hot sister.
I agree 100%. I've really enjoyed Bice. But I think Clarkson has done OK, also. (didn't watch much of the first season, though. Don't know if she was the favorite or not. Bo deserves what he gets. I assume he'll get a contract regardless of the end result.
