Anyone else think this is beyond stupid?? I know it's not all publishers but even just one publisher to take a classic work and make dumb changes like this to it beyond me. It's a historical novel, the wording should be retained. http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_newsroom/20110104/en_yblog_newsroom/huck-finn-gets-some-changes
A particular version with some terms pussified? And the world's atwitter? There must be dozens of versions out there already. It's like a radio mix of a popular song. The original is still being published. And probably getting some renewed interest.
the schools too timid to teach the original will teach the p***y one. And the kids will seek out the original -- probably on their smart phones, during class. It's so hard to burn a book these days.
Says the guy that complained about language (that gets censored anyway) on an Internet forum. You're never going to live that one down, holmes.

Ridiculous to change a classic novel. BTW, I see in your sig you talk about FOX dropping Firefly. Firefly is one of the best shows I have ever seen. It is too bad that they did not make more of them. Josh Wedon(sp?) made one heck of a show there.
Predictable. Same reason history and social study teachers will say any racial slurs without any problem because it's "within context", but never speak the n word directly when teaching civil rights and slavery.
I hold my responce to this topic and wait to see what this man responce would be. <a href="http://photobucket.com/images/uncle%20ruckus" target="_blank"><img src="http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv174/comicsandscifi/Comics%20Cavern/ruckus.jpg" border="0" alt="Boondocks - Uncle Ruckus Pictures, Images and Photos"/></a>
Nothing new here. This has been happening for ages. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Bowdler. Doesn't make it right, mind you. Just not exactly unique. Idiots have been modifying classics for years. It's probably not going to stop any time soon. Fortunately, as the song says, "ain't nothin' like the real thing, baby."
I really don't get what the big deal of it is, even the bible has been changed. Maybe they changed it because teachers didn't want to explain what the n-word meant.
The past is offered as a learning tool, not moments to rewrite. (Actually I'm just waiting for the XXX version now since versions seems to be pc)
I am conflicted on this. I hate the changing of a classic, but in its current version this book would never be taught in a middle school. Now this version can be taught in middle school. Hopefully, when those kids get older they will search out the original.
yep! as a friend of mine said..."Huck Finn was written as a reflection of society in an attempt to change it. Instead, 127 years later, we are changing THE BOOK to conform to society."
