    That looks awesome :O

Really makes me hope that FTL space travel (if ever possible) becomes a reality within my lifetime.

^Almost looks like a quasar edge on -- I bet that thing has a massive black hole in it's core.

Is that galaxy real or is this just a marketing ploy for Interstellar? NASA could probably use the additional cash.

Always wondered why these systems were so flat and not spheric

By these systems, I assume you mean spiral galaxies. Very, very big clouds of spinning gas form galaxies. Because of the conservation of angular momentum and the behaviour of gas to decrease gravitational potential energy, flatness emerges when spinning.

    good question, RocketRiver.

Just to add to dmc89's post, there are some systems that do look kind of spherical (e.g. globular clusters), but like he/she said, they wouldn't be spinning very much.

Because they're all spinning around its center, and following each other's same orbit in or around the same center.

My mind is blown seeing entire galaxies in the background of a photo.

Tonight I say, we must move forward, not backward; upward, not forward; and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards the future
