Is that galaxy real or is this just a marketing ploy for Interstellar? NASA could probably use the additional cash.
By these systems, I assume you mean spiral galaxies. Very, very big clouds of spinning gas form galaxies. Because of the conservation of angular momentum and the behaviour of gas to decrease gravitational potential energy, flatness emerges when spinning.
good question, RocketRiver. Just to add to dmc89's post, there are some systems that do look kind of spherical (e.g. globular clusters), but like he/she said, they wouldn't be spinning very much.
Because they're all spinning around its center, and following each other's same orbit in or around the same center.
