    Exactly.

Why does race matter? Sounds like a renegade cop and a bunch of disrespectful punks.

Yeah, like that guy who got shot outside of Spy a few years back inside the ditch(before the light rail was completed) while he was trying to break up the fight. Unarmed, of course.

Aggressive cop, drunk crowd, what could go wrong?

In situation like this, one stupid reaction by the cop, result in another stupid reaction by the crowd. The crowd was also at fault, but the cop is being paid to use common sense in that situation.

Luckily no was any worse off then getting nailed by a taser.

I'm glad it's not just me. I love the sound of the bass ringing as the bass player get body slammed, then the crowd going "oohhhhh!!!!" I know, I know, it was a terrible incident....but I still thought that was kind of funny.

This incident is an extreme example of how Houston's lack of zoning kills local music clubs. And what's worse is that the authorities (politicians and cops) always side with the residents. If you're going to have no zoning, then people who move into these areas should not be supported when they attempt to change the nature of the neighborhood.

Do we really need any more ugly lofts in this city? There are plenty of empty ones sitting around.

it's a matter of gentrification which happens everywhere..from the boroughs of new york to the neighborhoods in houston.

Basically, the artists move into low rent housing areas and before you know it...t's "cool" and hip to live and hang out in these areas.

Before you know it mr mocha latte is moving in next door and rent has increased 3x

remember...the key is you have to learn is how to avoid getting run over by mr. trend*ucks bmw..

Yeah. New York has zoning and that doesn't help. I don't know what the answer is.

Money always talks. Those who want to be hip and have money, will buy themselves hipness, or so they think.

    Publicity....

Now these guys have some national buzz, and HPD is still known for buzz-cut commandos that overreact.

judging by that little smirk the cop had on his face when he was talking to the singer it seemed like he was looking for a fight. you dont grab someone by the throat and throw them down because they ask "why" when you tell them to turn down. if that had been me i probably would have ended up getting tazered or shot by the cop b/c i would have gone ballistic on him.

ive played a few shows or parties that have been shut down and the cops NEVER confronted the band like that, especially at a club. the mature thing to do would have been to get the soundman to cut their pa. this guy acted like a total meathead and he's lucky he didnt get the crap beat out of him, cop or no cop.

this is just another case of the stupid bully mentality that so many cops have. i really think alot of them are just trying to provoke people to start **** with them so they can arrest them. im sick of it! just recently i was riding my bike on 6th street. i had already passed several groups of cops and no one said anything, but all of a sudden two cops start shining their flashlights right in my eyes from about 30 feet. i was blinded and had to stop before wrecking. these idiots are yelling at me "no riding on the street". that was new to me, but i complied.

another good one was a year of so ago i was walking my dog at peace park and a bike cop rides by as my dog is peeing and says "you better pick up after that dog". i said "he's urinating sir". he stops his bike and says "dont talk back to me". i just shook my head.

why is it thuggish behavior to defend yourself from an overzealous cop?

Maybe I'm just old school. The only time in my life where I found myself staring at a bunch of cops pointing their guns at me thinking that I was an armed killer, well, I decided not to mouth off. Yeah, it's a totally different scenario I know.

But watch the video. Of the guys involved 1 guy was a peacemaker. He was holding back the guy who wanted to fight the cop,who to me, wass acting like a thug, not "defending himself".

The cop is totally in the wrong, but these guys were breaking the law, refusing orders to stop breaking the law, and then trying to fight the cop (not all of the guys, but a few stupid ones).

I feel so caught in this one. I have a number of police officer friends and I am a musician who has had a run-in or two with noise problems over the years. I know that all cops are not jerks. One of my police officer friends who is one of the best people I know told me that, just like any job, there are jerks in his business as well.

Obviously, the problem here is that you have a cop that made a seriously bad decision based on the complaints of people who should know better. If you carry a noise meter (a lot of cops who patrol these beats do), you know that a lawn mower or a leaf blower is a LOT louder and more annoying than a band inside a club.

I rehearse in an area near residences. We double soundproofed everything and never go past 10. Only one person has complained and she is several doors down from the space. Everyone else says they can't EVER hear it. Yet, that one person can be a real thorn in my ass.

On the other side of things, who is stupid enough to, when a cop obviously tells people to back off, decides, "Hmmm, I think I'll try to kick this guy's ass." Don't be frigging stupid. Just back off, do the right thing and let the cop hang himself with his actions. Don't make him look like a hero by jumping on him and trying to put your beat down.

The whole thing is moronic and Sara Cress over at the Chron Handstamp blog summed it up by saying that this will do nothing but keep people from playing in what is already a fragile music scene. It's really just stupid, pathetic and sad.

    ROFL... :D

Man I saw 2 metal bands during the summer, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster and Haste the Day, and it was one of the loudest shows I'd ever been to.

I guess the louder bands will have to opt for Java Jazz now...

I do not trust police in general, and in a crowd in particular. I never talk back to the police even if they are dead wrong. I will never argue with a policeman. The policeman has discretion on point to make split second decisions. Good or bad that is the way it works.

I hire off duty police from time to time to provide security at construction sites. I am not friendly or comfortable with them. All business. They have questioned why I am so serious with them. There is no in between for me-I will be polite and courteous, but it is always all business for me with them. You can get killed if you cross that line.

I am glad no one was seriously hurt.

Things can get so out of hand so easily with mob psych at work. I am not defending this policeman.

I'm glad no one was hurt.

    So, this makes it acceptable?

"Hey, the Gestapo have burned entire villages for less...quit your whining!"

I just heard on 740 that HPD is launching an "investigation" into this incident. Can't find a link yet.

Also, the video is on the front page of YouTube. Should be interesting to see how this all turns out.

I have a gig tonight. I hope the sound guy keeps the volume down....I really don't want to get BODY SLAMMED by HPD. :(
