After two days of playing with the WebOS, I have to say that it doesn't have the user interface experience of the more polished iOS. I found myself going back to my iPad1 when I needed to actually do something. The touch-clicks are a bit wonky and don't 'feel' as concise as in iOS. The much-vaunted Flash didn't really change anything for me. In fact, mouse-overs don't seem to work on linkable gifs (putting your mouse on a gif just clicks it). Embedded video seems harder to work with in terms of forwarding and reversing. I wasn't able to grab the video bar, I had to click on certain points I wanted to watch and be satisfied with the general time it landed on. The apps themselves are sometimes way overpixelated; that may happen in stock ipod/iphone games that have been blown up for the ipad, but i have a jailbroken app that cleans that up. Also, I can't seem to resize phone sized apps on WebOS, which makes some of them virtually unusable. Despite the speed difference between the two devices, even with the Touchpad overclocked, the iPad apps and web browsing seems to 'pop' a bit more and seem faster. This is probably a result of a more mature OS on the iOS side. Hardware wise, it's a slick device. I have no qualms about buying a 32gb for $180....it's just a ridiculous price in bang-for-the-buck terms. I also like the keyboard way more than the iOS keyboard, even jailbroken replacement keyboards. Glad I got it, hoping the Droid port comes out soon, and is mind-blowing. Until then, I'll keep an eye on developments and pass it to my wife, who primarily steals my ipad for web browsing, with the TP is good enough at. Thoughts? Anything vital that I may be missing as a TP noob?
The Fire is missing some stuff like a camera/webcam. It's also a bit smaller at 7" vs 10" (which can be a plus or minus). Comes with 8GB of space vs 16 or 32 for the Touchpad. I still think the Touchpad comes out on top as far as bang for the buck, especially once the Android port is released and dual boot is possible.
For what reason? As far as value for the price goes, the TouchPad is still well worth it over the Fire. The Specs are almost identical other than the Fire missing a couple of things and that the TouchPad has webOS (Android being ported soon).
Splashpad Wow. Just wow. On sale now for $4.99, regularly $20 It works, that's all that needs to be said. This Touchpad just got a WHOLE lot more useful. Just tested it on a local LAN on Wifi and it worked after having to do as little as installing the Splashpad server on the PC and typing in the IP address it supplies onto the Touchpad's Splashpad software, and bam, there it was. Not difficult, and it did everything I tried to make it do, which granted was not a whole lot yet. BUT, when trying to access some of the same features just using the Touchpad's browser ability (a lot of my work stuff is web-based), the Touchpad will NOT do it - I don't know why, maybe some esoteric java junk or something, but I can GET to the pages, but then getting into the functionality, the Touchpad's basic browser ability can't handle it. Loaded Splashpad, made the PC itself do the work, and it worked flawlessly through the Touchpad. It's frankly amazing how well this worked. I will give one bit of advice (and maybe this is just my own lack of knowledge on this new software, so YMMV): I like to set my PC to 'Auto-Hide' on the bottom toolbar. Problem is, I can't seem to make the toolbar pop up using the Touchpad, so I had to turn off 'Auto-Hide', so I could see all the buttons for running programs along the bottom. So, unless you discover a way to make the hidden toolbar pop up, you may want to remember to turn off Auto-Hide if you normally use it. Will definitely be testing this more under different scenarios, and will pass along further info as I can. But so far, it's absolutely worth spending the 5 bucks. I don't know how long it is on sale, so you might want to hurry if you are interested.
SplashTop is the awesome. I just started using it yesterday. I take my TouchPad to meetings at work instead of my laptop and people drool in envy. It works so incredibly well. It is far, FAR superior to VNC. Can even watch videos. Everything comes through - sound etc. Responsiveness is actually rather impressive. The keyboard works very well. If you have a TouchPad and you have any need to remotely access your PC, purchasing SplashTop is a slam-dunk decision in my opinion.
Splashtop only allows the game I tried in windowed mode. Of course, to get into windowed mode, I had to start it in full mode then tap f4. Also, Splashtop does not like if you're remoted in via RDP then try to take over with Splashtop.

I'm really sorry to derail this thread. I can't search or create a new thread so i thought maybe people in here could help. I fell alseep next to my laptop saturday night after i was on it. When i woke, it was shut off and wouldn't start. I have gotten it to start up Windows 7 only once but there were all sorts of things popping up saying error and i needed to restart. Well, i can't get Windows 7 to run at all anymore. When i restart it, it just goes to a black screen that says: Windows Error Recovery Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Startup Repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, choose start Windows normally. Launch startup Repair(recommended) Start Windows Normally ------------------------------------------------------------------- When i hit start windows normally, the load screen comes up, then logo pops up, then it goes black and returns back to the same message above. When i launch start up repair, it gives me option to use tools to help fix problem. Select an operating system to repair: But, the list is blank so i can't choose anything and i choose the second option which is "restore your computer using a system image that you created earlier. it scans and then tells me Windows cannot find a system image on this computer. I close it all out and it takes me to a menu with these options: Startup Repair System Restore System Image Recovery Windows Memory Diagnostic Command Prompt I tried system restore, but i get an error "You must specify which windows installation to restore. Restart, select an operating system and then select system restore" Someone please help...
I found a windows xp installation cd, installed XP. Everything seems to be working fine except its running really slow. Im trying to update my video card, but i don't know how. i ran the dxdiag and also checked from properties and my video card information just says "unknown." Anyone know how i can find out? If not, i guess i'm gonna have to try and get Windows 7 again. Sorry again for leaving all this here. Can't make threads.
Who is the manufacturer or your laptop? Does it have a partition for the recovery files? If so, try F11 or Ctrl F11 when you turn it on.
You could have borrowed a Windows 7 disc as well and attempted to re-install or repair. Go to start> run> and type in msinfo32 Find out the exact make and model of your computer and get on the manufacturers website, find the downloads page for your machine and grab the drivers.
had mine for a week. installed all the tweaks but just not polished as iOS. unpredictable sensitivity of the touchscreen is irritating. i dont know what areas I can touch to edit. like in settings. if u pinch to zoom and move the page at the same time in the browser..it jumps randomly to another part of the screen. thank goodness i didn't pay 500 for it. would have returned it in an instant. but for 100..eh.
Just have to hold on for android. I'm surprised at the progress they're making. Maybe we'll see a working build before the Kindle Fire comes out.
