HP says webOS coming soon to printers. And PCs. This year. I guess this is their secret plan for webOS world domination.
So what is this WebOS actually? A WebOS built mainly for the tablet like the Honeycomb or is it the WebOS of the mobile phone on a tablet?
webOS was always great for the tablet form factor even in its original form, but they said the Touchpad will be running webOS 3.0 while the phones run 2.2 (just like Android!). I believe 3.0 has some tablet-specific optimizations - so far what I've noticed is the way notifications are handled (stacked notifications at the top right corner). Otherwise it seems to be the same great OS for both. If you asked me I'd say that unmodified webOS 1.4 is still better than Honeycomb as a tablet OS.
Here is a guy who slobbers all over WebOS, knocks Android and completely dismisses Microsoft in the tablet space. (He also dismisses RIM, but that's a given). http://scobleizer.com/2011/02/09/hp-makes-google-look-even-more-creaky/
I will purchase one if it's under $500, since I love my palm pre. Will eventually upgrade my cell phone to either an Evo or just switch to verizon for it's iphone.
Cool. I'm going to have to check out webOS again. I remember loving it when it first came out and how innovated it was with the swipe gestures that Android and iOS starting to copy. I guessed it was the phone that lost my interests.
The Pre3 looks quite attractive too, if only for the fact that it is a world phone. Why, oh why, do phone manufacturers not make more world phones? Why do people who travel internationally have to be stuck with some boring, restricted "business phone"? GSM+CDMA on one chip is a win. I'm disappointed at the fact that no WiMAX or LTE radio was announced, but the Pre3 still manages to hit the top of my wish list. That said, the fact that they're making us wait till summer to buy anything means that I might just follow through on my threat to take a one year excursion to Android land. I need a new phone yesterday.
Same here. There is also no guarantee that Sprint even carries the Pre3. I don't think I can wait any longer and will jump ship to another carrier/phone real soon. Suggestions?
I'm still holding out hope that Sprint will announce a successor to the Evo's throne next week at MWC. If not I'm might buy a used Evo off of eBay and bide my time until HP can get their act and ecosystem together. All the great phones are on Verizon & AT&T, but no amount of gadget lust is going to make me give up my $56/mo monthly bill. At least I can amuse myself in the mean time by installing all sorts of custom ROMs on the Evo like the very intriguing MIUI, for example.
The phone will be dead in the water. I think HP knows it too. But they are definitely focused on the tablet, and there is potential there. Particularly if they get the price right. WebOS on a tablet could be very, very nice. Also, HP managed to piss off some of the existing Pre userbase already - they announced that they WebOS update to 2.0 they were promised has been canceled.
Damn no confirmation of the processor. I was hoping it would be the Qualcomm dual-core (like rumored). That would mean that HTC dual-core phones would be close (since they only use Qualcomm chips in their newer devices). Debating whether to get the Inspire or just wait for an HTC dual-core.
I like the small midget phone. All the stuff you can do on that little thing and then it also has a beautiful qwerty keyboard.
Tablet is a dual core Qualcomm APQ2060 at 1.2GHz, Pre3 is a single core Qualcomm MSM8x55 at 1.4GHz. @Rokkit, yeah, I'm starting to wonder if the Pre3 is essentially a concession, although I'm hoping they at least follow through on the promise to release a steady stream of new devices throughout the year and maybe finally deliver something that can compete with the likes of the Atrix/Bionic spec wise. I don't plan to sit around and wait though. I do like the TouchPad though, and I think the Veer is more likely to succeed where Kin and co. failed. It's small, cute and attractive, yet snappy as hell. There's one niche market that doesn't have to compete with the big iron spec-busters.
there's no question that the specs put these things at the head of the pack (or in-line with the pack considering they're not release until the summer). biggest question is still developers. i'm surprised that hp's homepage now has all three products on their homepage (no computer related stuff). pretty cool that the world's largest computer manufacturer is banking on webos this much. pissed at the release dates, nonetheless. may have to pay full price for a pre 2 to hold me over (depends on the veer's release date). effing apotheker and his "within weeks" comments. toying with the idea of selling my evo.
I've already made up my mind - I'm switching to Android. Hopefully within a year HP will have finally gotten their act together and webOS will be worth switching back to. I love the OS to bits, but I'm sick and tired of waiting around. And they just screwed all of us loyal users over by announcing that after months of promising, they're not going to deliver webOS 2.x to legacy devices after all. That naturally has a lot of users and developers really pissed off - some developers have actually been spending the past few months developing 2.x apps with the hope of being able to release them to existing users. As for me, I'm hitting Craigslist to find an Evo or Evo Shift off contract. I'll wait till after MWC just in case Sprint does announce some new flagship Android device, but either way, I'm done with my Pre minus. Patience has its limits.
damn this thing lags badly. Hopefully this was just a bad demo unit or something. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4ZA8kgd_YY&feature=feedu hopefully they will get things worked out in the next 5+months before release. I saw something about it doesn't have hardware acceleration yet, so maybe that's why it is so sluggish. if I was HP I would have been concerned demoing it in that state.
so the hp touchpad with webos (yes... webos, swoly) is being released tomorrow, but they've had the operational demo units in some wal-marts, staples, bestbuy's, sam's, and many other stores. if you haven't had a chance to toy around with it, it's a pretty nifty device. reviews have been mixed. some reviews state it's better than any android tab, but not quite the ipad. ease of use, openess, hackability, and flash may steer me in it's direction rather than the ipad though. we'll see. anyhow, i believe this is the first ad... not sure (or maybe there's a paquiao one. not sure.). <embed src='http://hpproserv.pb.feedroom.com/hp/hpproserv/hpscaleshare/player.swf?Environment=&SiteID=hpproserv&SiteName=HP Products &SkinName=hpscaleshare&ChannelID=a8004f2b77bb59dfae1d7ca85870e610270b251c&StoryID=df11d111a7f7bdf05f89048a46d67ea54ab91ac2&Volume=.5&AutoPlay=true&MoreVideoURL=http%3A//h30428.www3.hp.com/%3Ffr_story%3Ddf11d111a7f7bdf05f89048a46d67ea54ab91ac2&VideoPlayer.videoPlayer1.StoryLinkURL=http%3A//h30428.www3.hp.com/%3Ffr_story%3Ddf11d111a7f7bdf05f89048a46d67ea54ab91ac2& Services=&rf=bm' allowFullScreen='true' allowScriptAccess='always' height='508' width='900'></embed>
