Yes, pretty much what I said. Mentioned it was too far a reach for Dorsey to play the position of center at all. Thats why DeAndre Jordan was brought up, get a natural center to play center. Dorsey being a Mutombo replacement was board talk, not me. Morey mentioned how Dorsey can play center (or how his measurables indicate he can play center). And with Mutombo not signed, people naturally tried to fit in Dorsey as that possible role filler. I dont mind Dorsey at all. I even like the guy, hope he does well. Just on this team he's more fringe rotation player Chuck Hayes type, not Landry or Mutombo replacement. And watching the occassional Clippers game on local TV here seeing DeAndre Jordan beasting it up admittedly's affected opinion
That's all I was saying. One guy is 20, 7ft 250lbs and actually can catch it clean and throw it down. He could actually be a guy that could play for yao and maybe even play with yao. Dorsey is already 25, 6'6 and a pf. How can a 25 yr old small pf be a project? When you have a older, athletically challenged ,small team like the rockets, jordan made more sense than dorsey in every way possible.
deandre had much, much higher bust potential than dorsey. if the rockets FO didn't like Rudy Gay because of his bust potential, there was no way in hell they were going to take deandre. deandre was a minimal impact college player, don't forget. literally you would forget he was even playing.
Morey also admitted they were wrong on rudy also. How can a 20 yrd big in the 2nd rd have bust potential?
did you watch him play in college? he was terrible. so bad that even with all his physical gifts TAMU used him as a BENCH player. he was tall and athletic, with zero fundamental anything, no clue how to play defense, offense, or shoot. on top of that he had shown no work ethic at all to improve his game. from the first game of the season to the ncaa tourney, he was just a tall athletic foul machine. Here's a summary that will put it all into words better than I can: "The freshman came off the bench and contributed 6 points, 4 rebounds and 4 turnovers in 15 minutes. He was immediately called for a moving screen violation right after entering the game, but seemed to be off to a good start after making one very fluid pivot move in the lane for a nice looking basket, and then scoring on an athletic offensive rebound put-back dunk. Things mostly went south after that, as he was called for his second offensive foul for hooking Lorenzo Mata-Real while trying to establish position in the paint, and then committed another turnover after being doubled-teamed in the post, not having the strength or reaction time to handle it quickly enough—which has been typical for Jordan this season. He did score another basket on an easy layup after his man left him alone underneath the basket to double-team someone on the perimeter, but was finally benched late in the game after a foolish turnover on a lazy cross-court pass, and two rejections he suffered underneath the rim courtesy of Kevin Love. Defensively, things weren’t any better. He left his defender wide open for at least four wide open jump-shots, not hedging and recovering quickly or aggressively enough on pick and roll plays, and did a poor job denying position inside the paint, which gave Kevin Love a fairly easy jump-hook shot right over him. His lack of awareness was really exposed when he was supposed to switch on a screen and cover Darren Collison, but instead tried to get his teammate to switch back in mid-possession, and ended up giving up an easy 3-pointer. Jordan did not finish off the season very well at all, scoring in double-digits just four times in all of January, February and March, after he was able to do so nine times in November and December. It’s pretty obvious by now that Jordan is a project with a capital P, one that will demand a great deal of nurturing and patience before he’s able to contribute much of anything in the NBA. He obviously needs another year in college to help prepare him for the pros, but the danger of not improving enough and damaging his stock badly may be too much to risk, even if it’s rumored that he is currently leaning towards staying. That’s the sad state of the NBA draft unfortunately. Jordan will have to develop a great work ethic and love for the game if he’s going to have any chance of achieving his great potential."
I watched jordan play in college. I also watched him play this year when they had injuries. When was the last time you saw dorsey play? All i'm saying and will continue to say is you take a chance on a 7ft 20 yr old project before a 25 yr pf project. Even if the only thing jordan can do is rebound and dunk the ball, his ceiling is stil higher than dorsey. In the offseason the rox biggest needs were athleticism and size. Jordan fill both, dorsey doesnt because you already have landry. Thats one of the faults with the rockets. Yao goes out and its a freeway to the hoop because they dont have a guy over 6'9. Thats a problem.
i'll take the guy who has proven he can dominate at the college level (even if only on one side of the ball) over the guy who looks, acts, practices, and plays like he doesnt care. i dont really care about "ceilings" of players because that's all arbitrary scout speak. talk to ten different scouts, and with the exception of the obvious (LBJ, CP3, etc) they will all have differing opinions on a player's ceiling. very few players reach the "ceiling" assigned to them during the evaluation process. i've seen dorsey play alot. not this year, but up until now he was clearly the better player of the two, and yes, still had room to develop his game. deandre looked a lot more like stro swift or mouhamad sene than he looked like deke. if he turns out to be a decent pro, then great, but it would have been putting a lot of money into a penny stock. sometimes they work and when they do its great, but a lot of times they dont. on the defensive side of the ball dorsey is much, much better than landry. dorsey's game at present is a little ahead of dwight howard when he first came into the league. he can rebound, dunk, and block shots. that's pretty much it. but rebounding, shot blocking, and dunking are things that are all fundamental parts of what this team does and how it is built.
^I'll be brief since this really isn't that big of an issue. We brought Dorsey here for his skills. As quoted from Morey several times when he was drafted, he was thought to be one of the most NBA ready bigs. Now, the issue is that he's not reflecting that assessment and he doesn't have enough upside to bring himself a serviceable level. Why some people think picking him over a genuine prospect like Jordan is a failure on the organization's part is because skills are very easy to evaluate. They're there - you just have to look. Nobody would blame you for picking a prospect that didn't turn out in the second round - there's really only upside. However, skipping that prospect for a player sought for his skills, and having that player turn out unproductive, is a missed chance, albeit, in this case, minor, fortunately. Maybe he'll turn around next season but, just as how I felt when he was drafted, I don't think the Rockets even need another undersized PF. This was already raised, what we need is a back-up center to fill Deke's shoes when he finally retires. And, if you're still interested on how he's doing, currently: Apparently, he is with the team at Portland. Just found this bit while scouring through BlazersEdge: http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/4/18/843911/gameday-pictures-rockets The link's to a pretty nice article about the visiting team (Rockets) by one of the users from the site. I immediately asked in my head why we couldn't have had something like this the past few years; but, after realizing who we've been matched up to... I think it was for the best we didn't. Still, maybe we can have something like this now?
Hindsight is 20/20. Morey is still a solid GM regardless. The decisions he makes are based on the facts given to him at the time - I'm sure based from those facts, he had a very good reason to pick Dorsey over anyone else at the time of the draft.
Ive only see him dunk in one game and was like damn that could be potential. Sadly he might suffer the same faith as Gerald green. Get one dunk a then never be seen again. I like James White better anyways. Best potential on that team as a project.
The thread should have ended after this post. (To correlate what durvasa said, I remember reading something earlier in the season about Morey being rather unhappy/frustrated with Dorsey's performance in the D-league and his lack of interest in making himself better.)
I read all the hype, and watched the YouTube highlights, and got on the Dorsey train. Live and learn. With that body he should of stuck with Gridiron.
Wow, you have just broken the hearts of the vocal minority who thought Joey would somehow develop to become a Charles Barkley light after they watched him in a few preseason games.
