14 teams, all equal chance, make it 14 ping pong balls and televise it. This would discourage teams from tanking. It's time to stop rewarding bad teams for sucking.
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but i think that each of the 14 lottery teams should have an equal shot at the 1st overall pick and after that it is in order of record. This gives an incentive to produce a good team which can potentially get a number 1 pick every so often, plus not hurt crappy teams too much
This probably hasn't been mentioned yet, but the bottom 14 teams should have an equal chance for the #1.
The rockets are the reason there is a lotto to begin with. Orlando is the reason why it is like it is today. I have no problem because if you tank, doesn't mean you get the top pick, ask boston. In fact ask boston if its rigged. It seems to me if it were rigged, the nba and stern would've awarded duncan to the long storied celtics and Yao Ming would've been in NY. In fact,if stern was as evil as some suggest, wouldn't he want Yao Ming in the finals every yr?
Even, if we get #1 Draft Pick, I would support the number of ping pongs according to finish. Right now, they made the NBA Draft lottery too complicated and unwatchable. It would protect from tanking and make NBA more competitive, I'm sure the Blazers had the draft in mind before they blew everything up at the trading deadline. It could have a undisclosed drawing, then a live lottery drawing, with tiebreaker going to the team with most losses. They could build into a really fun event and I would enjoy watching lottery live, unlike now where I didn't give an once of care on the draft position anymore.
imagine if for example, lebron james spent most of the season pre all star break injured whilst Wade missed 15-20 games, you could in theory have a team making the nba finals whilst also winning the lottery, lol
I have no problem with the current system, but the lottery needs more oversight, perhaps government officials should be part of the process.
So very true. Also, what the conspiracy theorists fail to realize is that each of the 14 teams in the lottery have representatives in the room during the actual drawing of the ping pong balls. That alone should tell you it's not rigged - if it were, the drawings would be done in total privacy away from everybody. That way the NBA would be free to announce whatever results it so chose but that is not the case here.
It is far too heavily weighted against teams that are picking 7-14. They need to open up the top 5 or 7 picks to a lottery format. Hell, maybe even the top 10.
Or it should be more like nature where winning is rewarded so the teams that make it to the playoffs get the lotto balls and the teams that suck get the later picks so that weak teams get punished and kept out of contention. Ahhhh nature! J/K.
No it wouldn't. It'd give a bubble team an incentive to tank out of the playoffs to have a shot at the lottery if they thought they'd get smoked by their round 1 opponent anyway. My recommendation: Put all 30 picks and all 30 teams in the lottery, with a smooth distribution that gives the best chances of winning to the best non-playoff teams (say 10-14 having the best chances), and drops in both directions. The best teams have a small chance of moving up but likely won't get much help. The worst teams are punished for being bad. The teams in the middle are given the assets they need to move up in the world and compete with the big boys and create some churn. And, there's no cliff where a team might get any benefit by throwing a game. The chances of the worst playoff team are only slightly worse than those of the best non-playoff team. Caveat: I like the idea of doing all 30 picks, but I can see how GMs would like to keep it to just 3. Outside of that small lottery, they have a lot more certainty about whether traded picks with protections must be transferred or not. With a lot of picks in the lottery, everyone has to wait till the end of May to know whether or not their picks will move.
In all honesty. In todays environment of corruption there would be no lottery if I was in control. Now teams can tank but in the scenario where there is a set ranking for every team win and loss wise? At least the true worst would pick best all the time and there is no suspicion of rigging the lottery. There is no weird process to go through. I think the lottery idea stinks on many levels to begin with. Its flukey and very cheap.
The funny thing is, Stern should have rigged the lottery so the Hornets COULDN'T win it this season after the debacle in the winter
End the lottery all together. Teams 14, 13 and 12 should get picks 1, 2 and 3 in that order. Then issue the remaining pics starting with the team with the worst record ending with the team that wins the NBA Championship. This would do more to give other teams a chance to get really good and prevent tanking. It would reward teams that don't tank and are smart enough to put together a competive team with out having a super star.
