Discussion in 'BBS Hangout' started by RedRedemption, Sep 29, 2010.

?

Pick one.

  1. Professional :: Could play in the NBA or any other professional leagues.

    10.9%
  2. Elite :: Dominates the court everytime you step on it. Yet, not good enough to go pro.

    1.9%
  3. Great :: You definitely contribute to your team and have lots of flashy moments.

    10.6%
  4. Good :: You're not the best on your team, but you can hold your own against anyone.

    26.3%
  5. Average :: You have good games, you have bad games. Inconsistent.

    24.7%
  6. Anything below average...

    25.6%

My friends described me as a (thinner and faster) Mario Elie type. I'll go with that, its a compliment.

Will try to be exact as I can...Using that as a gauge, in my "prime" -

-Typical hustle player. Undersized but athletic compared to the field, but with handles way too poor to be a playmaker.
-Always moving without the ball. Nose for loose balls & offensive rebounds.
-Excellent transition speed, I make it a point to never get beat down the court. (can't do that anymore).
-Long arms, decent hops. Don't go for steals but good for a deceptive block or 2. Face-up perimeter defender (can't do THAT anymore)
-High level quickness without the ball. WITH the ball I'd turn into a slow Battier/Trevor Ariza terd :(
-Very willing passer, love to pass but court vision not good. Not good passing into the INTERIOR (which I think is what makes a good passer), but good passing out of traffic to the perimeter.
-Good from midrange 17 feet in. Fair to decent from outside. I'd say I'm clutch and make them when it counts.
-Deceptive post skills. Good jump hook, turn-around shot and up and under moves. (Have tendency to get the Jared Jeffries layup misses.)

Pros- Shooter, athletic, hustler, good defense when I try, rebounder, nice court vision, very good passer.

Cons- Shoot too many 3's or 2's I should say, no handles, when shot is off everything seems off, can be beaten off the dribble easily, play smaller than I am.

Are we talking Currently or in our prime?

When I was 18 I had to decide between going to a university in the Netherlands or going to the US to a College, and try to make a career out of Basketball. I decided for staying in the Netherlands (partly because I just had my second surgery on my knee).

However now I haven't played basketbal on a high level for 10 years, and haven't played basketbal in general for 2 years. So i'm kinda rusty. ;)

Horrible. All my strengths are mostly attributable to my mental approach and "athleticism", if you will, which means that I probably won't completely suck at any physical sport that I try. I have very little actual skill.

    Strengths:

Perimeter Defense - the thing I take pride in and usually the only way I impact the game positively
    Size - 6'0", ~190-200 lbs
    Speed, Strength, Agility
Post Defense - only taller players post me up and I have difficulties challenging their turnaround jumpers but fundamentally I'm pretty sound
Passing - from a standing position.
And1's - no joke, I can finish better when fouled. I guess I anticipate contact too much.

    Weaknesses:

Dribbling - no left hand, easily stripped when driving. See Artest, Ron.
Shooting - when I played 3-4 times a week, I developed I pretty good midrange jumper. Now that's gone. I occasionally blow easy layups.
Size - at 6'0" I should have no business playing anything but PG. Unfortunately I can't dribble so I have to play off the ball
    Endurance

I feel comfortable if I'm the last option on offense and can concentrate on locking down opposition's main offensive weapon. If I'm not capable of that, I'm pretty much a burden.

These days below average. I haven't been playing much basketball in the past few years and have too many injuries.

No left hand. No real fastbreak dribbling ability. No consistancey in shots further than 18 feet. Out of control when driving to the basket sometimes.

The only thing I can pride myself on is playing the passing lanes, passing the ball, brute strength, dedication to playing perimeter and help defense and having a knack for knowing who is the best player on the team.

I'm 5'8'' 200lbs in the gut with a 6' wingspan but it's all in the shoulders. :( Not a whole lot I can do but "fascilitate".

I haven't even shot a basketball in 7 years. But the last time I did, I won 3 free pizzas from Papa Johns.

I missed the half court shot that would've given me free pizza for a year. :(

I'd rate myself between average and good.

I've got a height advantage on just about anyone I play against at 6'4", but usually not a weight advantage as I'm 150lbs soaking wet. I've got a somewhat effective post game, but I still have issues with getting pushed off balance and missing what should be gimmes.

By far the best part of my game is my jumper. I can go cold, but when I'm hot, I'm HOT. Just ask Moes. Problem there is that I have a tendency to shoot the ball too much when I get it, without much regard to anyone else.

When I am inclined to pass, I do alright with it. Nothing fancy, but I usually get the ball where I want it. My post entry passes are pretty solid.

My defense is hit and miss. On the perimeter, I'm long enough to give up some ground to protect against the drive that I can still effectively challenge a jump shot. My post defense is adequate solely due to my height, but due to my weight, I'm easily pushed around by shorter, stockier players.

My biggest negatives, like many in this thread, are ball-handling and endurance. Can't dribble to save my life, and I'm pulling on my shorts halfway through an active game, which lowers the effectiveness I have dramatically.

Damn. Now I want to get back out there too.

I suck. I tend to be "guy who can't shoot and camps out at the 3 pt line" unless I'm feeling particularly like getting my shot swatted 10 feet out of bounds.

I'd say my only above average skill is passing. That's been the case since middle school. Couldn't shoot worth a damn, although I hit plenty of game winners since I'd always be wide open (moes19 can attest to this, although my luck is much less now than it was back then)

I haven't played in a long while, usually having prior commitments, or just being lazy. I need to get my lazy ass out there soon. It all went down hill after I finally let Kam block me after like a year of him trying his damnest to do it and I would just pass out of it.

I was like Keenum with my "pocket awareness". I knew where Kam was at all times.

He finally got me, and I turned into Concussion Keenum.

    I'm a girl, 5'7", can't jump.
3 pointers- that seems to be my game these days. My dad never wanted me to develop a 3 pointer right away because you live by the 3, die by the 3. It wasn't until sophomore year in high school that I practiced it. Which was helpful because I'd try shooting 3's, and if I was off I try taking it to the basket. Still is my game now.
getting open is another one of my strengths. I was often double teamed and played the box and 1 against me because I was my team's scorer in high school. This forced me to really work on ways to getting open.
Defense- I love playing defense. I'm not super fast, but I think I'm a good defender. I always play pretty intense, rarely go for blocking shots which helps because I usually don't get blown by after falling for a fake. I get low and keep my ground.
I can handle the ball, passing is mediocre- I tend to telegraph sometimes, I did a very good job of rebounding in high school but in pickup not so much, and I can't take charges. I'm also bad at layups. I just don't have the mentality to make layups. I miss so many. It's awful. Biggest weakness.
I could've played college ball. I had lost interest by the time they started contacting me. I had 2 small colleges in Texas super interested who were asking me to visit campus, a couple others who were semi interested and then Lamar University was interested when I went to 2 team camps there, but they never followed through afterwards. I don't like making excuses, but my small school wasn't really on the map. I don't think I got the exposure I could've elsewhere, but I've been happy with my decision not to play.

I'm a good rebounder and I can set a DEVASTATING pick for my PG to take it to the hole.

I've been practicing my jumper lately and I'm pretty good at H-O-R-S-E, but something happens in the game and I just choke when I get an open jumpshot, so I pretty much just stick to defense and rebounding...

My dribbling skills are slightly worse than Chuck Hayes....

I voted myself "good" at the present time.

    Strengths:
Size - Im a pretty big guy 6'6" and about 225lbs
Above average defender. I have good shot blocking timing and solid rebounding
Very good all-around shooter (especially 3's) when im on normally I can hit 5 or 6 in a row easily

    Weaknesses:
Dribbling - not the best dribbler.
Endurance-needs work and a bad ankle acts up from time to time
emotional-I let myself get mad and taken out of my game.

I used to be really good but got kind of out of playing shape and a little older. I started back playing and can usually win vs. most players I face. I did recently lose a game of 21 to my 18 yr old son for the first time ever which made me feel so old, but he is 6'7" and plays for his High school so maybe im not declining he is just improving

Based on the replies in this thread, you guys should be able to field a team that could possibly earn an NBA playoff spot.

    -I'm inconsistent
    -Not a good ball handler
-I can play pretty good defense if I'm motivated (not being in shape has a lot to do with it)
    -Rather average passer
    -Good at crashing the boards
-Minimal to no post game (though I do have some moves)
    -Shooting is usually my forte

Overall, I'm pretty good. I'd like to think I'm one of the better shooters that participate in the pickup games.

Iwas pretty good in my day. All district, Cream of the crop in houston as a senior, D-1 basketball player and the chance to play overseas. Now, I'm just a check writer and student of the game. I haven't played since 04 and even then guys thought I played everyday, but i was only once every couple of weeks because i was getting my business off the ground.
