How valuable was the 6 million trade exception part of the Ariza trade?

I doubt it will be used in a Carmelo deal. If it's used, Les will essentially be paying $12 mil for a player we don't need. We will try not to use it at all cost unless it will somehow allow us to keep a quality rotation player. On Denver's side, they have several expiring contracts, Anderson seems to be the only bad contract we could use it on. I don't know how fans feel about him, but I imagine he's a fan favorite. Not that bad of a contract either, so I won't be surprised if they keep him even if they go into major rebuilding mode....unless he can net them a prospect.

If it's used before the deadline, I'm guessing it will be to replace an injured player. Again though, it's not something we'll want to use. Next summer it won't be so costly to use it though if we still have expiring contracts coming off the books.

The salaries may be the same but the TE isn't equal to Ariza's salary. It's equal to the difference between the outgoing salary (Ariza) and the incoming salary (Lee). Gortat's salary won't fit.

(Ariza salary - Lee salary) < Gortat's salary

    Ah, you didn't hear.

The Rockets made two separate trades. One was a trade of Ariza for nothing, generating a trade exception in the amount of Ariza's full 2010-11 salary. The second was a trade for Lee using a portion of the Carl Landry trade exception. This has been reported both by Jonathan Feigen and by Jason Friedman.

    Hope that clarifies things.

So so basically we can take back any player who is in the second year of a full Mle deal and the salaries would match.

The only down side is that we have to pay Dollar for Dollar tax for the full six mil because we are over the cap.

    And the trade machine :p

Notice that Carl's TE dropped from 3 million to 1 point something.

Nope. The trade exception can't be combined with other players and we have no cap space.

I'm aware that Zaza P. makes less than $6M, that's why I said : "Both Foster and Gortat make over $6M ". Notice, I said Foster and Gortat but not Zaza.

Nope... I didn't know that. In that case the TE is for more than $6m. Ariza's salary is something like $6.3 or so million.

One small correction: The Rockets actually used a portion of the David Andersen TPE. The ESPN trade machine is mistaken. I emailed Larry Coon with a TPE related question, and he replied and explained that, according to league records, the Rockets still have all of the $3 mil TPE from Landry, and used $1.4 mil from the Andersen exception to eat Lee's salary.

    Wow, great to know!

I had actually emailed Larry about why there was no mention anywhere (including ESPN's Trade Machine) of a $2.5M trade exception generated from the David Andersen trade, but I never heard back from him.

I guess that answers that question.

Great management of trade exceptions, Morey!

So, it looks like the Rockets still have a full $3M trade exception to use leading up to the February trade deadline, in addition to the $6.32M Ariza trade exception.

    Happy Hunting, Daryl!

    Interesting insight into timing ---

We'd rather have a full 3m available through the trade deadline than a full 2.5m available through to the offseason. Probably a minor point in all, but interesting about how little value is placed on the extra offfseason flexibility. Maybe due to a potential looming lockout?
