Big man like Yao shouldn't be playing no more than 20-25 minutes a night at the most! The definition of a stress fracture, too much stress and activity placed on the supporting structure of the body over time, in this case the feet. Therefore, in order to reduce the chances of a stress fracture, you need to reduce the amount and time of activity. That's just common sense. Playing 35 minutes out of a 40-minute game every night for someone of Yao's size is just insane. You are asking for trouble!

I am swimmer, water polo player and a life guard. SO I would say I am quite athletic but not on land. I believed he need to balance rest and training. I don't think a professional player like Yao will ever get enough rest as NBA season
    is very demanding.

I absolutely hate yao playing at high post. However it might be one way to avoid his injuries. I think Yao's minutes should be around 33: 20 for low post, 13 for high post. When playing tough teams like Spurs, Mavs, .. or in play off, he then should spend most time in low post.

An NBA basketball game is 40 minutes. You want Yao to play for almost the entire game? That's just stupid.

I'm definitly blaming the SHOE. I don't believe Reebok went out the produce a special shoe that is fitting for a 7' 6" 300lb person. When I look at the shoes out there, I see they are horrendously design for a very big person. They need to design a shoe for him that will protect his feet and I don't care if it look totally horrendous.

Yao also need to be wearing a special shoe even when he's not playing basketball. I see him wearing those horrendous unprotected dress shoe.

Maybe Yao is unlucky. Maybe things does comes in 3. First 3 years without injury and now 3 years of injury. Maybe the next 3 years will be free of injury and 3 Championships.

48 minutes, ok. but 35 minutes per game is still way too much. thats only a few minutes less than what he has been playing this season. that make no difference at all.

20 minute per game is still plenty, and is certainly better than 0 minutes which you will have when Yao gets injured. more than that is foolishness.

    good post.

I thought all along that the stressed left foot is the result of unbalanced weight bearing, possibly because he injured his right foot when playing with the Bucks in Houston. Supposedly he landed his right foot on Yi and suffered a sprain, so he might have to overcompensate with his left foot to alleviate the pain.

If he plays in the Olympics its not gonna get any better also if Mac can stay healthy as well instead of putting the whole load on Yao for 20 games is important. And they need to learn to take him out of the game when we have a huge lead . ex : New Orleans 27pt lead

You do not play your star 20 min. It would be pointless to play Yao that little. You would basically turn him into a 13-14 point, and 6 rebound player. What good does that do when his potential is clearly over 20 and 10.

Also how do you get him in the rotation. You start him and play what 8 min in the first and 2 min in the second. Then 2 min in the third and 8 in the fourth? You risk falling behind too much when he isnt in to make it worth even playing him late. Or you risk a close game and having to sit him the entire crunch time cuz he is at 20 min? Either way it wont work.

A guy that big will be at risk for injuries. All you can do is limit his minutes somewhat (maybe 33 or so, not 20) and hope he stays healthy or at least is at his healthiest come playoff time.

That's an interesting idea. I wonder whether reebok to design a shoe that have extensions to transfer Yao's weight to his thigh or pelvic instead of his foot. :D

Yao should be able to play 36 -38 minutes a game.....he just got an injury that he can't play through.

    He will be fine.....

He does need to take care of his body more, and do less stressful excercises........like running in the pool instead of the track.

Sounds a good idea. That may help stamina, will it help your speed? I am just curious.
