I'm not sure how much you watched of OKC, but this isn't really the case. The coach had to sit him down in December to talk him into changing his offense because he was doing too much iso and not allowing the other guys to create offense. This is when his "unhappiness" with OKC started. Through December he was getting a lot of shots, heavy iso and taking too many mid range jumpers. He was terribly inefficient and the team's offense was stagnant. They wanted him to play off ball more which he said he would accept, the offense got a little better. After the season he said he doesn't like that role. He wants to be a creator for the offense, not a finisher.

If we do get him, and that’s not a sure thing, then I think it will be most important for the coaching staff to sit down with him and thoroughly explain their plan for him in the offense. It appears to me that Melo was disappointed that the OKC staff allegedly didn’t put thought into ways to use Melo. More of an ego thing.

I think the ego thing is overrated and pointing out the lack of a true offensive philosophy with the Thunder is underrated.

He doesn't like to do what he's good at though. He's inclined to play bully ball and over dribble. D'antoni tried to correct it once and failed. Not saying he cant fix it this time around, especially if Paul can help get in his ear. I'm fine with a few bully ball plays per game if it shuts him up. Joe Johnson got em.

It will be most important for his brother Chris Paul and James Harden to sit down with him and thoroughly explain the plan for him.

Whatever Mike says might go through one ear out the other. ;)

*While I think Mike's preference would be to NOT sign him, I don't think he'll necessarily object either.

As much as analytics are in basketball, a lot of it is instincts. When CP3 was burying those j's on the warriors, he wasn't counting dribbles or looking at area. He was getting to his spots in a sense, but they know it too.

Yet MDA was running the offense when he was Olympics Melo. It's all about context IMO.

CP3 is not same as Jeremy Lin. And I'm sure he respects Harden, if not his game, more than any if his Knicks teammates.

Great players find a way to make it work. Especially if high BB IQ. Melo is much smarter than he gets credit for.

Carmelo might be useful if he could incorporate this move into his game, which Larry Bird made famous:

Excellent post, OP, though the dearth of JCDentonesque charts is problematic. ;)

The items I've bolded above play right into MDA's system.

People love to hate Melo to the extreme, but when you read how his teammates feel about him and check MetaCritic his Metascore sits at 93 -- Universal Acclaim based on 874,523,214 critics.

6th man to play with either Cp3 or Harden.
