I just wondering how many of you guys here had or working as a bartender? how can you apply for the job? do they train you? how do you like about the job? I am going to UK for a year and I would like to find a part time job there, since there are a lot of pubs there, I think it might be cool to work as a bartender
A majority of bartenders I know got started of as waiters in restaurants then later got trained as bartenders. I think that there is also a bartending school.
It can be a lot of fun. At least it was when I tended bar at a club in the Village about 30 years ago. The parties after closing could be unbelievable... and very fomfotable.
It was a small place, although we had a stage and had live music on weekends. I came in a few times, sitting at the bar, and got to know the manager. He was pretty cool and we hit it off. I just asked him one night if he needed some help.

...here's something I actually know something about Tended bar throughout the 80s...owned my own the last two years. Much like what The Real Shady said, I start my work life in resturants and eventually worked my way up...assuming bartending is the end all If you are a traveller it is a good occupation. Easy, quick money and food if there is a resturant around. I don't know about bartending school but I would never hire somebody from a school back then...personality and attitude was way too important and some of the folks coming out were just plain...you know. I would rather train someone...or in some cases, steal one from another bar Now days? Who knows (didn't Jimmy Hendrix have a song titled that?) Good luck! RR
