i can't imagine why they would think that's the best use of the $27 million God entrusted to them.

but God loves religious people, too! :)

You see, and thinking about that exact same thing (the 27 million wasted) makes me infuriated, but you laugh it off. How?

I ask that sincerely, not in a jerk-ish way.

Punk, don't the script on me lol

I'm more mellow these days ever since I decided to stop posting dead baby stories (with the exception of the one where the stepfather drowns the kid for insurance money)

Currently, we use the earth's rotation on it's axis to determine our days, and the orbit around the sun to determine a full season, or year.
Who's to say that this rock has always been in orbit around this particular sun? Maybe it was at one time, maybe for billions of years, in orbit around another star, or not in orbit at all?
Days and years at that time may be totally different if the orbit around another star was significantly further and took longer to complete.
Haven't planets been known to escape orbit in some cases?

My belief is that time to God isn't the same as time to man. 1000 years as stated in the bible, is a general term for "a complete time". A lot of it is not literal, expecially the book of Revelations. Revelations was written from a dream, God showed what was to come to pass as a dream, and that dream was translated to paper.

Say for instance, that God showed a city being destroyed by a nuclear bomb. Now, man at that time, had no concept of a modern bomb, let alone a nuclear bomb. How would that man translate that dream image?
He might say something along the lines of, "fire rained down from the sky, and consumed the city, and I saw the tongues burn from the skulls of the people.."....(just made that up).

Beasts in the sky may very well be modern fighter jets.....

i just don't believe that science really knows.

i think it's probably a few billion. but the word "day" in the bible actually means "period of time." at least thats what it originally meant.

this will be one of those questions i ask the Big Guy when i get to meet him. if i ever get to, that is.

I am on the extreme religious side and believe the earth is appx. 4.5 billion years old. Religious does not equal stupid. And I let the Vatican do my thinking for me!

I don't get how people are trying to fit a 4,000+ year old interpretation into 6 days=4.5 billion years with pseudoscientific legitimacy. I guess that's 18 days post big bang and 31.5 billion in dog years.

If that were true, there'd be evidence of such a feat, like elevated radioactivity at ground zero in your other example.

That'd amount to saying that God took his cue stick, hit earth, but missed the other planets in his attempt to combo Venus into the sun.

I am only sure that the earth is 47 years old, if you know what I mean.

The world is probably much older than people think....

    1) Look at all the stars floating in the sky are probably much older than this planet.

2)The whole dinosaur and pre-historic organisms discoveries, most of these fossil either are real or scientists have been playing dirty trick on us.

    3) Ice Age- Modern Period

    4) 4,000 - 6,000 years really doesn't even cover all of human history, which is at least 8,000 -10,000 years old.

I am an astrophysicist and my specialty is planet formation. We have very good ideas about how planets form and we are actually able to observe the process at various stages around other stars.

There are two main ideas for how planets form. The first is that they form by very small seed particles clumping together in the gas and dust filled disk around a young star. This takes quite a while to occur. The second possible idea is that planets form due to instability in the disk. This would happen very rapidly. Planets only form around young stars, there are no other conditions that are right for the formation process to occur. It is true that planets can possibly be ejected from orbit around the star, and this would occur early in the planet's life. However, the probability of a planet then being captured into orbit around another star is so small that it almost certainly has never happened in the history of the universe.

The age of the Sun and the Earth are determined by many different methods and these methods all agree within small uncertainties. Someone mentioned earlier in the thread that science will likely come up with new ways of measuring the age of the Earth and the numbers will change. This is very unlikely. If we do come up with better ways to measure the age of the Earth, they will only improve the precision in the number. For example, if we currently believe the Earth is 4.5 billion years old, that could be 4.45-4.54 and it would still round to 4.5 billion. Better ways of determining the age would give us those additional decimal points.

I guess I got a "oh well, it happens!" type vibe from the "god loves religious people too" comment.

    Sorry if I misinterpreted.

as a Christian, I do believe God is redeeming the world...and that it will be redeemed. so I do have hope. and i do believe that God loves these people as he loves everyone.

but I'm GUESSING I'm more offended at this sort of stuff than you are...because it involves my faith. i do have a bit of "oh, well" because i've realized i can't change people's minds. i do think there is a strong movement in the church right now to bring it back to the focus of how Christ taught us we should be living. of course, these people would probably disagree with me as to what Christ taught us.

Scientists (Satan's minions) have found humoid skeletons dating over 8 millions old.

    Wikipedia says

Modern humans originated in Africa about 200,000 years ago.

God has some explainin' to do.

i think the oldest we have would date to 4 million years old.

oldest modern human skeleton is about 40,000 years old.

i'm not so convinced God ever said differently! or that he addressed the issue with us at all. :)
