Any bets that the contract has been waiting for signatures for months now?

    Whatever it takes.

I'd offer him 10 million, and offer him (regular season only) a clause that he'd only be asked to play at home. No traveling until the postseason. Ultimate semi-retirement.

He wants more cash, he can have it.

No way in hell. This would royally screw the rotation for the Astros. On a 10 game road trip, who gets added to the rotation? Who do you bump to make room for Roger? What happens if you're on a 6 game homestand - do you bump whoever was scheduled on day 1 so Roger can pitch twice before the team leaves again?

If Roger wants to pitch for the Astros, he should do it because he loves the team and wants to win a World Series. That means being part of the team, like everyone else. None of this "treat him differently" crap.

There is no way they can have him only pitch at home. That would totally screw up the pitching rotation. Also, assume a pitcher gets 6 starts a month. That means they are only getting Clemens for 12 starts.

It is more important to keep the top 4 starters on a set schedule then to offer Clemens a home-only clause.

Man that's ****ed up. Go **** yourself Roger Clemens. And I mean that with the greatest respect.

I understand the rules of a contract having to be a certain amount based on previous pay and that Clemens isn't demanding this, but it's around what the minimum would be by rule. It's still ****ed up.

One thing about Roger is that he is pretty durable for a guy his age. If you look at Curt Schilling for instance and how many times he has been hurt Roger's health problems last year seems like nothing. His body broke down at the end last year but I think that is a result of age. As far as working out goes from what I have read he works extremely hard to stay in shape. He looked fine in the WBC and his body should hold up for about 5 months.
Get it done Mr Mclane and then Roger can finally retire after the Astros have won a championship with him :)

Didn't they treat him differently the past two years? I thought he only had to go to the away games when he was actually pitching, or something.

I think so. I don't have a problem with that.

I think its going to take a minimum of $15 million to get Roger and he is worth every damn penny to Drayton just based on revenue/attention he brings into the Astros every time he pitches. Not to mention if he were able to get us over the hump and win the series, it would do wonders for this franchise for years to come.

Drayton definitely made a lot of money last year that he would not have made without Roger. So pay that man his money.

Drayton made a lot of money last year because the Astros went to the WS (playoff home revenue is not shared). Roger played a big role in that, but so did a whole bunch of other guys. Roger will be one of 25+ guys who can help the Stros "get over the hump" this season. He's not a savior.

All this is off the top of my head, so I'm using round numbers:

Last year, Stros home attendance averaged 5000 more during Clemens' starts
    5000 x $50 (ticket + concessions) x 16 home starts = $4million.

Jersey sales are split b/t MLBPA, MLB and the individual team (iirc), I don't know the percentages (if anybody does I'd love to see the breakdown).

Of course he impacts media attention & fan interest, but it's hard to impossible to put a pricetag on that (broadcast rating were up *slightly* during Clemens's starts, how much that affects ad rates and sales, which I'd imagine are bought pretty far in advance, I have no idea).

Roger's "worth every penny" because he helps make the Stros a better team with a better chance of succeeding in the playoffs (if he's healthy, HUGE if). I'm not sure you can justify the idea that he pays for himself, though, absent *team* success.

Wow...Its nice if you can get it...is the money worth being spent on roger or someone else...Baseball wise, you would think someone else, but for Houston, roger makes that up in ticket sales...

This is insane for someone who may not bring it for the remainder of the season...
