"Von Wafer definitely deserves even more than 3 million each year, as long as the rockets give 22m each year to tmac who is not even half as good as Wafer." You truly are joking right????
wow, i'm a bit surprised. even with my Rocket tinted glasses, i would put Scola at 9-15, so our appraisals of Scola actually overlap. having said that... KG, 33 years old, 24.7 million Jermaine O'Neal, 31 years old, 21.3 million Duncan, 33 years old, 20.6 million Dirk, 31 years old, 18 million Marion, 31 years old, 17.8 million Rashard Lewis, 30 years old, 16.4 million Pau Gasol, 29 years old, 15.1 million Kirilenko, 28 years old, 15.1 million Randolph, 28 years old, 14.7 million Ben Wallace, 35 years old, 14.5 million Kenyon Martin, 31 years old, 14.4 million Bosh, 25 years old, 14.4 million Odom, 29 years old, 14.1 million Rasheed Wallace, 33 years old, 13.8 million Elton Brand, 30 years old, 13.8 million Raef LaFrentz, 33 years old, 12.7 million Boozer, 27 years old, 11.6 million Al Jefferson, 24 years old, 11 million Troy Murphy, 29 years old, 10.1 million Josh Smith, 23 years old, 10 million Antawn Jamision, 33 years old, 9.9 million David West, 29 years old, 9.9 million Okafor, 27 years old, 9.5 million Al Harrington, 29 years old, 9.2 million Boris Diaw, 27 years old, 9 million Antoine Walker, 33 years old, 8.9 million Kenny Thomas, 32 years old, 8.6 million Okur, 29 years old, 8.5 million Malik Rose, 33 year old, 7.6 million Juwan Howard, 36 years old, 7.4 million Drew Gooden, 28 years old, 7.1 million Chris Wilcox, 27 years old, 6.8 million Udonis Haslem, 29 years old, 6.5 million Tim Thomas, 32 years old, 6 million LaMarcus Aldridge, 24 years old, 4.6 million rookie contract Kurt Thomas, 37 years old, 4.2 million Tyrus Thomas, 23 years old, 3.7 millon rookie contract Ron Artest, 29 years old, 7.4 million Luis Scola, 29 years old, 3.1 million Carl Landry, 26 years old, 3 million age is at the start of next season, salary is current season. there are probably a few others i missed. so my question is not what you think Scola is worth for his production and age, but what other teams will be willing to pay him? hence, the OP's question, how much will it cost to resign him? the salary cap will be over 60 million, and the luxury tax threshold will be around 75 million or so. that means teams will have about 55 million to pay their starters and about 20 to pay the reserves. or an average of 11 million per starter including rookie contract players that are starting, an average of MLE for the 3 key bench players including rookie contract players that are not starting, and minimum salary or 2 million dollar exception (formerly 1 million exception) for everyone else.
The list above is interesting (thanks). While the contracts of those players are all over the map due to the market when they signed them, the ability they showed at that time (the classic "contract year" scenario comes to mind), the situation the team that signed them was in when pen met paper, and so on, one could come to the conclusion, at least I could, that Scola should be looking at a contract starting in the $7-8 million range for 4 years, perhaps with a team option for a 5th year (or the 4th, if his agent doesn't throw a complete fit). Maybe a little more. Since we'll have him as a restricted free agent, with the ability to match an offer (thanks to whoever pointed that out to me), we can only hope the market favors us. I just think a contract starting at $10 million a year is too much, and I really like the guy.
oh, i don't think he'll get a contract starting at $10 million either, but at 10.5 percent raises, a 5 year contract for $50 million will start at around 8.5 million. i know he'll be 36 at the end of such a contract, but he's hasn't logged a whole lot of NBA minutes on his knees or back, and his game isn't predicated on athleticism, footspeed, or hops. so i predict that he'll be able to do the same things at 36 that he is doing now, except that he'll have an even greater understanding of the NBA game by then, with possibly better shooting, if he continues to work on his game.
As long as there's a team option for the last year. I think that might be his market value. Guess we'll find out, eventually.
I'm sorry, but Von Wafer isn't worth $3 a year. You can basically get a lot of Von Wafers from the d-league. Von is undersized, he is a defensive liability, and a serious ballhog.
considering the type of money that guys like Rashard Lewis, Josh Smith, Maggette, Andre Iguoda, etc. are making, I'd say 10M+ for Ron is to be expected. Remember, it's about market value. If Morey doesn't give a nice offer, we could end up seeing Artest in another jersey next year.
I just think you have to be very careful when offering a contract to a 30 yr old guy like scola. I've never said he's not a good player and that's not to say he won't continue to get marginally better, but a lot of those contracts that were posted were based on potential and production. The hope is to "grow" into the contract. If Scola wouldve been here at 25 and would be 28 likee manu and nocioni was, cool because the production is still climbing. In that case, I could see 8m per for 5 yrs, but at 30, not the same deal. I don't have any information, but the rockets might have to include scola in a package to get someone really good. He's cheap and productive which is good, but this team is going to have to do something in the offseason to close the gap on La before Yao is really going downhill. That's not a knock on him, but that might be the position the rockets are in.
I'd much rather sign him to a 4 year deal, with a team option on the last year, even if we have to bump the salary up a little. He'd be easier to move, IMO, if the Rocks felt that was something they needed to do in the future.
actually, a lot of those contracts were based on the market value of talented PFs. KG, Rasheed Wallace, Jamison and even Duncan actually took pay cuts from their previous contracts. KG, to make Minnesota, and then Boston more competitive for free agents and reduce the luxury tax, and Jamison, so the Wiz could resign Arenas when he opted out; a big mistake for Jamison considering Arenas string of injuries. Juwan Howard, Tim Thomas and Kurt Thomas had outrageous contracts before and the second time around are still grossly overpaid, but that's their market value. sure, you wish you could keep your young productive studs at a rookie level contract forever, but that's not the reality. sooner or later, they all want to get paid. and they do. the very fact that Scola is a top 10-20 PF, shows how much of a dearth there is in the league for a good, healthy 4/5. if the Rockets lose Scola, sure they still have Landry (and even then, for only one more year, before they have to pay big bucks to resign him), but if they wanted to sign another top PF, they would have to shell out well over 10 million for the first season. they could try to sign Millsap, Gooden, or Haslem, all who are going to want a contract that starts at least the same or more as the previous season, or in Millsap's case significantly more, which is beyond MLE, but that's not an improvement over Scola just to save a million or two per season. they could trade, but almost no one trades big for small, unless they get a better player in return. so then the Rockets will be stuck with the likes of Hayes, Juwan, Stro, Eddie Griffin, Ryan Bowen, Kenny Thomas, Clarence Weatherspoon, and Maurice Taylor as their starting PFs once again.
That's why I said 8mil per year is about right for Scola. He's not going to be a 15-15 guy without Yao in the lineup.
If all of you here think that Scola is equal or better than Gooden, then we should ask Gooden to sign n trade with SA and give Scola for him, i am 100% sure that the spurs will do it, do you?? By your thoughts you all have to admit scola is better or do the trade, because from what was pointed here. Scola only averages the same as Gooden because he plays along Yao. Scola is no better than Gooden on defense and for some is acctually worse. Scola is older than Gooden. Gooden has more PO experience than Scola and more league experience as well. (of course Scola has experience at high level as WC Finals, Euroleague Finals, ACB Finals and Olympic Finals. Plus, Gooden will not command a contract starting at 7 million after the season he had, Scola will at least, being very negative about him, will command 6 or more millions at the begining. So, would you trade say, Scola with one year left on his contract, for Gooden on a 4 year 20 million contract?? I would NEVER do this trade. First of all, let´s go to raw stats. They average almost the same stats for this season, being 2nd season for Scola and beeing the 7th for Gooden. Notice that Gooden was traded a lot, that would mean something to an NBA GM, i assure you. If we then go for career stats, we go like this. G for Gooden and S for Scola. MPG G: 28.3 S: 27.3 PPG - FG% - FT% G: 12 - .470 - .730 S: 11.4 - .521 - .714 RPG - OR - DR G: 8.0 - 2.6 - 5.4 S: 7.5 - 2.2 - 5.3 APG - STPG - TOPG G: 1.1 - 0.8 - 1.64 S: 1.4 - 0.8 - 1.39 BPG G: 0.6 S: 0.1 Done this, we all would say Gooden is better, would you still do this trade?? Now let´s take a look about "he gets a lot of points of Yao" and "never gets doubled" Scola played without Yao last season playoffs, in those games he averaged like this. 14 ppg on 45% shooting making 66% of his FT and grabbing 9.3 rebs (on his rookie season and being doubled a lot by one of the best interior defenses in the game) So, would you do it?? I won´t once again, because as a main difference i see Scola being a great team player, and a great chemistry guy, cannot say the same for gooden who has been in the league for many years but never got my attention. And the reason i think i wont do it at all is because Scola can still improve a lot, he can improve his defense a lot (defense is one of the most different things between NBA and Fiba games), he improved a lot his FT this season, and i think he will command more shots. This season Scola got only 9.8 shoots per game average, which is very little for a player with his FG%. The guy goes for 10-12 the other night we lost, he didn´t complain that he hadn´t a shoot in the entire first half. I don´t think they are similar, i think it is a coincidence that Gooden has been on a lot of teams where he was the only Inside player with some ability to Score. If Scola was on thet Bulls team or in the LeBron cavs, he would have average better than Gooden i think.
I don't want this to turn into a trade thread or anything like that. I think the rox are in the position to where if they don't make a major move this summer, they're going to just be a middle of the road team in the west. I think Tracy has played his last game as a rocket and I think Yao is at his peak slightly going downhill. Brooks, landry, wafer and lowry will all get better, but I don't think either will play on a all star level. To be a major factor, you need 2 all star level players and a 3rd that is really close. No one on the rockets can or will approach that level. They need a guy that can play at that level and it might cost them a guy like scola to get. We can dream and think about Bosh. The way things are shaping up in Toronto, the rockets could offer a package incolving scola (3m), Cook (3.5m) Shane (7.6m) and maybe a pick. The danger in that is he could bolt at the end of the year, but the bonus is the rockets have 1st shot like artest. Bosh in between Artest and Yao along with brooks and landry and the rox would elevate above everyone else and would be on par with La. Also guys like Butler, Deng, Carter ( whom the nets want to move to be players in 2010) and jefferson are all guys their respective teams might want to move this summer. Jeffeson makes 12m, butler makes 9m, carter makes 11m, and deng makes 9m, but those guys have multiple years, could play well in a motion type offense and would add slashers and finishers to a team that really needs them. All except deng are near all stars, but deng is the youngest out the group. The team has to think forward and move accordingly. To get better, sometimes you have to give up a good player.
A "passed his prime" Yao still posts 20/10, shooting 55%, blocks 2 shots, alters much more while getting all the attention and double team in post. Scloa is an excellent role player, but he won't be a first option on any NBA team, and his length and athleticism won't make him a defensive anchor for the rest of his life. If you've been rooting for the rockets team for that long, your IQ is even lower than I thought. You are making Wafer look like Einstein.
clevelands gonna offer artest wallys 12 million dollar expiring contract if its more than 3 years im not matching if von plays well in the playoffs hes gone otherwise i think we can get him for the mid level exception.
They can't offer anyone more than the MLE since they are way over the cap. The only teams that have any significant cap space this off season is detroit, Toronto, OK, and Atlanta.
The Rockets need to hope that McGrady gets healthy quick. If the Suns miss the playoffs T-Mac's expiring contract might appeal to them. Mcgrady + Brooks + Lowry/Hayes/Cook for Nash + J-Rich (over $14M in 2010) = Suns save around $14M in the long term.
I am not sure if they will part with two starters for T-Mac, he is a big expiring but also a big problem sometimes. I would say more of the likes of Nash and Barbosa maybe.
Why would u want a old pg that can't defend a barstool. Not only that, he struggles in halfcourt ball and as long as Yao is on the rockets, they're a halfcourt team. If and when the rockets give up tracy and his contract, it should be for a younger player that has production that is getting better. I lke Richardson as a player and he makes sense as a sg. I think they could probably get richardson without giving up mcgrady and use mcgrady money to just come off the books the 2010. That's why is say or think scola will be in play for someone like butler, deng, or jefferson. Scola, battier for butler makes sense money wise. Scola, battier, cook makes sense money wise for jefferson. Scola, battier and a pick makes sense for deng money wise.
Is this right? http://www.spursreport.com/forums/s...h-childress-tiago-splitter-2.html#post1127132 If it is, i would think the Rox may overpay Scola a bit as a way to say "thanks". This really shows a great commitment for a player that might not recover that money.
