Not bad. 3 years 36mil for Artest is robbery for someone with his talents. I don't think we would offer Scola a 3 year 30 mil contract considering the contracts that Yao and McGrady have. James Whit is signed for next year but I don't know what his contract is. As for Von Wafer I think whatever contract they plan on offering him they should just let him walk and add that on to Artest's contract so it could make re-signing him a little bit easier.
I don't think any smart team would sign Artest for a contract longer than 3 years. I wouldn't sign him for more than 2 years. He's just too much of a risk. I'd say we sign him for 8 to 9m for 2 years, with a third team option. Scola will be more than the MLE. I'd sign him for about the same range as Artest, but for a much longer term. Scola is a stable and consistent player. You want to lock him up. And what are we going to do with TMac?
Finally.... I think you're the first one to say that White gets the NBA minimum - sanity prevails!! Why the heck would he get any more than that
You are using the Isial Thomas method of signing players. Daryl Morey can get those guys for: 1. Artest 7-8 million per season. Morey wants to offer him a 3 year deal. Artest wants a 5 year deal. 2. Scola around 6 million per year 3. James White NBA min, which is around 800,000 4. Von Wafer around 1 million - 2 million per year. Closer to 1 million than 2
I think Scola may be well worth 10 million a year as long as the contract is not to long. I don't want a 5 or 6 year deal. 3 year with team option for 4th would be great. Artest I dunno. Any amount for next year is OK for me, but I am not wanting even a 3 year deal with that guy.
Scola will sign for more than that even in this downturn of revenue. Battier makes 7 per for this season and two more seasons after that.
There is no way Scola gets 10 million a year. At most he'll get Artest money, which is around 8 million.
He plays part time PF with Landry who gets 3 million a season. In the eyes of the Rockets Scola is roughly as good as Landry. Battier makes 6.3 million He was highly regarded in Memphis and when he signed his contract it started at around 5 million Scola next contract will start roughly 6 million
I think 10 might be possible because we have no idea where the economy will be in 2010. If things are looking up, and teams have tons of cash to spend (due to the 2010 free agency feeding frenzy) then it is quite possible. If the LT drops twice before 2010 FA then all salaraies will be down bigtime. You also have to think he has an entire season and a half left to show what he can do which will greatly change value.
I don't get it either. There's this incessant need to prove that skills trump athleticism. We get it...the issue i have is that there's some need to tear down perceived athletic players for the sake of proving this point. Also, i would consider Scola to be pretty athletic (although, people like to say he is unathletic because i guess it makes him seem like he works harder or is smarter). When compared to Gooden, he is faster from end to end, he has better lateral movement, and he is quicker flashing to the rim. The only thing Gooden has on him, athletically, is his jumping ability (which he seems to have lost due to injuries).
yeah he makes 6.3 this year but averages over 7 for the next 2 seasons. Also your comment about him being as good as Landry is so dumb I feel dumber for having read it. Scola is the starter and he gets way more playing time.
10 million dollar players are all star caliber players like Manu Ginobili who makes 9.9 million. Ron Artest who makes 8.5 million. Scola doesn't even own the PF position outright. He shares with with Landry. I just don't see Morey overpaying. He is very careful with money but maybe you are right.
Landry is a better finisher around the rim. Last season Landry was better and would often finish games. This season Scola is a little better. All in all it's debatable who is better after just 2 seasons. Scola's defense is also mediocre. Landry too.
Scola is a free agent in 2010, so a lot will depend on how many teams are with cap space and are after Chris Bosh, if there are 3 or 4 teams after Bosh, with significant cap space, then keeping Scola will be very hard, because after Bosh is signed, Scola will be receiving offers from one of those teams that got screwed by Bosh. All that will take is for him to say "i won´t accept a sign n trade" and with that all teams will offer him whatever they think he is worth. Teams are reluctant to offer Restricted FA money when they know they can trade for them, but when they are sure their shot is the free agency, can go crazy.
And when Memphis signed Battier to his deal, that started around 5 million a season, they considered him a top player. The economy was better then too. All in all Scola will get a deal around 6 million starting when his contract expires. That's more than MLE money and someone like Scola is worth MLE money.
True- Ron is a much better player then Maggette. If we can get to the Western Conf. Finals Ron is going to get paidd!!
I think Scola is gonna look for some big money, one because he's one of the best and two because he's older. I think we could keep him for 8 a year if we're doing well..
the MLE will start around 6 million a year in 2010. a 5 year contract from Houston with 10.5% raises will be about 7.5 million per year. other teams can only offer 8% raises. the MLE is the average NBA player's salary out of over 430 players, not the average starter's salary. there are 150 starters in the NBA, about 120 of them are true starters (> 30 mpg). about 80 of those guys make around 9 million or more. there are about 100 active players making 7 million or more. Daryl Morey can't really do anything about resigning free agents for cheap. what he could do is somehow convince other teams that the Houston ones are worth a lot more than they are and trade them for cheap contracts (rookie contracts or underpaid players) with unrealized potential. finding the diamonds in the rough. the good news is that Artest didn't have the breakout season he needed to get max money and still has a shaky reputation around the league. Morey should be able to sign him for less than 12 million per year, hopefully less than 10 but that's not likely. the question then becomes for how many years. Morey will probably want to just extend him for 5 years which is still cheap (almost 10 million per year for an all star in his prime), and Artest will probably want a 2 year contract in the 20-25 million range with a second year player's option just in case of injuries, and he will likely opt out during the free agent frenzy in 2010, which actually isn't a bad situation for Morey. Scola on the other hand is a big question mark. quite a few teams (mostly sucky, cheap, losing teams) are going to have a lot of cap space to outright sign a max player or two. realistically, those players (Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Dirk, Amare, Boozer, Ginobili, Rip Hamilton, Joe Johnson, Red, Nash, Ray Allen, T-Mac ) don't go to the those teams as an outright free agent, if they leave at all, and instead go to a team they prefer in a sign and trade, leaving several teams with loads of cap space that they have to use per the rules of the current CBA. in other words, there will be money for Scola, and a lot more then just the MLE.
My problem with your take is not that you don't respect international play... that's your prerogative. I don't feel the same way, but I do think the NBA is head and shoulders over the European leagues. It's not that you don't think Scola is the most athletic guy on the court. He isn't. What bugs me that you think he's not better than Gooden. I think that's nuts. And while Luis isn't terribly athletic, he is no slug, he is athletic enough, and he makes the most of what he's got. He doesn't play "small for his size." He's tough, smart, and relentless, with great balance and better hands. I don't know what your problem is with European players. They put their shoes on one at a time, just like the rest of us. Thanks for the tip, R2K. I saw it too late!
