$172, 1820 sq. ft. house built in 1965, and not particularly efficient. I had electric bills over $300 when my parents lived with me for a couple of months, but never over $200 otherwise. Good habits ftw!
The natural gas price spiked over the last couple of months, and natural gas sets the price of electricity in Texas. In the past 2-3 weeks, the natural gas price has come down by about 30-40%, so relief is in sight. All you folks who are on variable, month-to-month plans shoudn't be whining about your bills - you had the choice to lock in, but instead you exposed yourself to the market and got burned
1900 sqft house situated in the worst possible way (all windows perfectly east-west, 2 stories). this month's bill was 202 bucks.
Hey guys, I've got a great idea! Let's elect Republicans to every office in our state and deregulate energy and let the market decide what the price of electricity is. Let's give Texans the "power to choose" which company screws them. Surely competition will bring the costs down. Does anyone remember how much their light bill was in 1999?
Your post is ignorant. Do you know where natural gas prices were in 1999? A lot lower, brah. If the Democrats were in power and we were still regulated, they would certainly not have allowed coal or nuke plant building, which would have been the only viable solutions to take the price setting mechanism for power away from natural gas. Natural gas prices were what shot up the power price, not deregulation.
I'm not disagreeing with your general premise, but you can't argue that prices rose but not because of deregulation but they would have risen with regulation. You're all across the board. Prices rose in a deregulated market this summer. Why they rose is another issue.
I totally agree. Congress has been the one cockblocking the government's attempts to discover other venues of natural gas resources, as long as it touches any environmental landscapes. Blah! Liberals.
$118 for a 4 bedroom apt. the highest it's ever been...although my parents in Houston paid almost $1,000 for last month for a 5 bedroom house so mine isn't looking that bad.
$258 for 2500 ft². I was surprised that it was that low. I have a 14 year old house with a 14 year old roof and a 14 year old a/c. I only moved in a few months ago and haven't had the time to make some changes (adding a solar powered attic exhaust fan, new weather stripping, etc.). I signed a 2 year deal with StarTex at $.135/kwh and it's seemed to have paid off so far.
This is 100% true. That's why it's best to lock in, especially during times like this. I had heard Spark was the cheapest in Houston, but this was about a year ago, so it has probably changed since then. Back then you could lock in around .12, that would be awfully nice right now! Another trick to save a bit is to lower your water heater, but don't go anywhere under 120-125. That will save you a decent amount for the little bit of trouble you'll go through. Pugs
1500 sqft one story rancher house - built in 1954 - not terribly energy efficient, but I do have blown in 36 insulation in the attic, a digital thermostat, and flourescent bulbs in every light fixture. May = $200 June = $220
Natural gas prices appear to be plummeting. The only thing that really affects me using natural gas is heating (house and water).
I have a 1300 sq ft condo(built in the 80's) with a loft upstairs that is very hard to ,keep cool...I just paid $180 this past month...It was a combination of my kids being here and my $0.16/kwh rate that was $0.12/kwh the month before...
For real. I always think of myself as poor in relation to most others on this board, but if I'm only paying $55 a month for energy and everyone else is paying $200-500, I wonder what other huge bills they have. In the end, I probably get to spend about the same on "fun" stuff as they do lol.
