I agree with this. Besides, if for nothing else, I would make a run for M. Gasol as a trading chip at the very least. With the handful of true Cs in the league, his value is higher than most would think. I feel that he'd be a valuable commodity when the 2012 FA race begins. Keep in mind that he plays beside Z-Bo which decreases his stat line for those that want to base him on that. He's as close to a 20/10 true C that'll be available apart from D. Howard. Think around 18/10/2 without a Z-Bo type hanging in the paint with him. Yeah, DeAndre looks nice and I'd honestly go for either but it'd be nice to have known productive big in our line up and, a real C at that.
Lowering of the salary cap won't really affect things much since it will also likely reduce max contracts. If the cap is reduced to let's say 50 mil then max contract for Gasol will come down from 14.5 mil to 12.5 mil, most likely.
I admit I haven't seen Dalembert play much but it's hard to imagine he could be the center on a contender. He's a decent rebounder and shotblocker, but lacks upside. Would he really be an improvement over Chuck Hayes? DeAndre Jordan's numbers are very similar to Dalembert (blocks ~5% of all shots, ~11 reb/36 min) except Jordan's FT shooting is worse and Jordan still has upside. Gasol is actually worse in blocks and rebounds, as he blocks ~4% of all shots and get 8-9 reb/36 min. However Gasol is a much more well-rounded offensive player. He actually has A/TO >1 which is very rare for centers. This is an indication of his good bball IQ. It's just my opinion, but I think it's important that all your key players have reasonable bb IQ if you want to win a championship. Dumb plays absolutely kill you in big games. I don't see any reason not to go after DeAndre, but this looks like a Jordan Hill-type move to me. Take a gamble on his upside if you can get him at a decent price. Personally I favor making an offer to Gasol around $13 million. In all probability Memphis will match but this will be a couple million higher than they would pay without our offer. After that we start making moves to position us for a bigger move in 2012.
yeah if we have a star or someone with star potential and realistically get him why not.. I'm just saying if we're idle and not offering anyone anyway.. we should find ways to make division rivals overpay..
I don't think the question is necessarily whether Chuck is better than Dalembert, etc. Assuming Chuck returns, the question for a guy like Dalembert is whether he fills a hole in the current bigs' skill sets. Chuck is great defending the post, but he'll never be a shot blocker and Dalembert is one. I can see the team playing the smaller lineup like they did last year for a good chunk of minutes even with the addition of a 7 footer, but at the same time, having the ability to have a Dalembert on the court when your team is struggling with, for example, stopping dribble penetrators from getting layups, would be highly helpfu.
having Kelvin Cato flashbacks.... If you think Gasol will give you 12 mil/per season results, then go for it!!!...I see 7 mil per season results, so thats what I would offer him
Of course its the purpose, Morey does it every year. No one would sign a one year six million dollar deal. He always makes sure he has expirings for trades. Bobby Jackson Jared Jeffries Hasheem Thabeet Now he may have said lets see if this kid is teachable but I doubt it was any sort of gamble.
I don't disagree but I think if we get someone like Dalembert this will prevent us from becoming a contending team in the next 2-3 years. He's just not good enough. Yes, we may be a bit better next season, but we'll peak at winning ~48 games, and we'll still have to replace Dalembert to become a contender. Gasol isn't Olajuwon but he's an Otis Thorpe. Dalembert is more like a Kelvin Cato. I don't see how you can win with players like Kelvin Cato in your starting lineup.
can we trade Thabeet for him and a 1st rounder? They did take Kwame Brown + 1st rounder for his brother Pau.
Jordan and Gasol will both be overpaid. I get that centers come at a premium but I would rather invest 10 million plus on a star.
The owners still are hearing it about Pau.. I could imagine what would be said if they got rid of Marc. I agree it's a pipe dream.
I would love to have Gasol in a Rockets uniform but I think Morey's first choice is to go after Nene instead. Plus Morey would have a better chance of doing a sign and trade with the Nuggets than the Grizzlies. The Nuggets have Birdman and Mosgov at Center and could get one of our PF's in a sign and trade for Nene along with other players or picks. I think the only way we have a chance at getting Gasol is if he tells the Grizzlies that he doesn't want to stay in Memphis and Morey overpays to do a sign and trade. Which is unlikely.
Our only need is a superstar, nothing else matters until we get that. You don't overpay for Gasol until you have a star worth building around.
