If he really wants to win and is willing to take less money, why would he resign with Rockets? He will be an unrestricted free agent. He will do what's best for him.

After 5 pages:) OK, what was the question again?

I think lots of posters already answered that. Obviously Les wants a championship, which owner doesn't? But I don't think he's in the upper half of the owners, in term of willingness. We all laugh at Cuban, but hey, if he's the owner of your team, who's willing to pay that kind of money to get Erika, wouldn't you just love him?

Again, when we had TMac and Yao healthy and playing very well, we had the worst other 3 starters in the league. If Les was eager to win a championship, he would have got those 2 guys some quality support, even if it means overpaying above average role players. Guys like Scola, Artest etc would seriously helping. Look at the Orlando magic, almost everyone (yes, I am exaggerating) on their team can shoot 3s. But when TMac and Yao were healthy, we talked about building around Yao (just lip service), the best 3 pointer shooter they got was Head and Nachbar.

The window of opportunity was brief. No, there was no guarantee they would have gone all the way, if Rockets didn't have to start Bowen and Bogans. But, they never had a real chance with those kind of players starting.

So, i would say, Les didn't want it bad enough back then. Now? It doesn't really matter, because we don't even have a core as a contender. No, it's not back to square one. Back to square one was we had SF3 at his prime, and we got the No. 1 draft.

All I see in this thread are a fat load of poor assumptions. Not one of you have proof for what you're saying. Terrible thread.

yeah this is one of the components or factors in yaos value to the rockets. No one else holds this card.

As for the rockets if it is certain we will not make the playoffs we then need to go to yao and tell him to sit and make that ankle or eyelash ,or whatever else feel better and keep him away from the court. A ploy on rockets part.

Then when it comes time to negotiate with him we can get him low due to ongoing injury AND loyalty.

So in some weird way it benefits the rockets to not have him play. I think on some levels they are feeling the wins and losses of this year out. While feigning that ultra caution.

If we can pull a few win streaks in a row together and be in the hunt for min 7 or 8 seed then I expect they might start to change strategy , play him and go all out.

It's kind of a win win approach if you think about it. wait a few more week and then either we run him into the ground assuming we can make the playoffs , or we keep sitting him and then we can get him for that much cheaper in the offseason playing the injury lower price signing strategy.

is morey and adelman one step ahead of us all?

Yao is very loyal. There are always limits to one's loyalty, but it's a quality that runs really deep with him. I think he'd be the first to admit it.

The reason why no one answer the question is because for the question to be meaningful, you have to make the assumption that getting rid of Yao is necessary to win a championship. I think that's exactly what people are debating. We can't answer your question unless we can agree on the assumption.

and also the question doesn't make sense. a championship is worth the same whether we win one with yao or not. It's value is worth the same. As for marketing if we can win and do so with yao then that has additional value as it adds the chinese fan base. So the question is already answered. A championship with yao is worth more than one without.

Separately to say we will win if we don't have yao is also flawed because we could win with yao. I am just not for overpaying yao going forward and I hope he doesn't hog tie us with pay demands. I'm thinking he won't and that is another reason why we have to keep him.and also another reason why there is not much reason to play him if we aren't even above 500

Not true. An assumption is just that, an assumption. It's a "what if". Doesn't have to be true. But IF it were true, what would be the difference in monetary value for Les between losing Yao's marketing value and gaining an NBA championship?

they are mutually exclusive. One has nothing to do with another. I would say though, if you were to measure it ,losing yao would probably be worth less than the value of winning a championship in terms of monetary /total value.

So then why not win the championship AND have yao? you are pretty much saying that we are more likely to win a championship if we don't have yao? that is a bigger assumption than the assumption that we can't win with yao.

    so lets review
    yao + championship > championship

Yao has probably had 50 different teammates over the last eight years. He knows the score.

Why are you asking random fans how Les Alexander weighs things? In something as specific as "keep Yao Ming cash cow or win 1 ring" the only one who can answer this is the owner, Les himself. Most people can only guess, and even if you poll everybody here it still won't be closer to the truth.

Secondly whats the point of this scenario? Trading Yao now won't necessarily give us the championship, so even the argument flawed.

It would be a nice question, except for the fact that the benefits of Yao are consistent. The benefits of whoever we could get for Yao would be a huge question mark, and certainly not anything resembling an automatic deep playoff run.

Are we also making the assumption that Yao has any trade value? That's probably the biggest assumption you made.

I don't think it's fair to judge Les based on what happens with Yao because of that -- you're not going to get anywhere near a kings ransom for Yao. So what's the point of trading him if you'll just get back minimum return value?

Unless you're just asking as strictly a business question: would Les make more money winning a championship without Yao than he would fielding a mediocre team with him. I'd assume -- of course, definitely. But that is an answer nobody would know definitively. We hear about how great the Chinese influence is, but we don't know the $ figures behind it.

Don't worry about Yao. Lots of teams want to sign him. Just worry about when and how The team get the champion

Loyalty goes both ways. If we try to lowball him(i.e. offer a crappy offer like we did to Artest), it would be seen a betrayal of that trust, and be much more likely to cause him to sign elsewhere. Furthermore, there's no one you can sign this summer (or any summer where things are heading) that would be better than a healthy Yao. All we can do is hope that he'll end up healthy, Z-style.

    loyalty. lol.

the smart move for Yao is to sign as a free agent with a NY or LA team rather than sit in on a rebuilding franchise out of "loyalty" for a fanbase that doesn't want him.

that's what lebron would do. or kobe. or anyone else that you guys worship as a "winner"

as for les, the bulk of his money is going to be when he sells the team. championships and stars will inflate the value of the franchise. here and in China.

again les is going to make money when he sells the team for hundreds of millions after an investment of short of $80 million.

That's not what I said at all. But in hindsight, that might be correct...simply because, in a league with a salary cap, too many resources were spent on a guy who can't stay healthy.
