I have a wife, children and career responsibilities. I would not characterize it as being chained down. Nonetheless, I think your idea is a very valid and solid one. Fact is, moves like that are harder to make as you get older. Though, the wife and I would seriously consider somekind of life altering type move like that once the kids are older... maybe. That being the case, if you have anything close to the means to do so, I certainly say go for it. Cost is obviously an issue, but young people are able to live in expensive places cheaply. Kind of illogical, but like in NYC, where everything costs an arm and a leg, there are tons of young, recent graduates with mediocre jobs if anything that make do. I can certainly see the benefits of staying in America as opposed to southeast asia. The whole move and process should be a lot easier, no doubt. I have little useful info for you, other than to say yes it will clearly be expensive, and Hawaii can definitely be great. I loved my trip there.
Uh, you live in the Phillipines and you want to "get away from it all" by going to an even more developed, more expensive pacific island like Hawai......why don't you just go to some rural part of the Phillippines (or Malaysia, or the rest of SE Asia, or whatever....)
This thread reminds of that episode of Andy Griffith where Howard is sick of "civilization" and the "same old routine", so he decides to move to a Caribbean island. Everything's great when gets there - like a vacation. But after being there a while, he realizes how boring it is doing nothing every day. The only difference between Hawaii and this place was this place was supposedly cheap. In the end, he turns into pretty much a beach bum, unshaven and bored out of his mind just like the people who tried it before him (who sit next to him at the bar there). Somehow I think I could adapt .... maybe.
Sounds perfecto to me. OP, might be a decent resource: http://www.islands.com/ EDIT: well, I don't know if it is a good resource or not, but I'm down the rabbit whole... so many cool little islands everywhere - southeast asia, croatia, italy, carribean, pacific, etc, etc.
Because of the temperate weather, and the fact that once you're on the island, there really isn't anyplace to go if you don't have money, there are a fair number of homeless; pretty much every public park, including beaches will have a few camping out by the restrooms. There's quite a bit of sprawl in Honolulu, however; I'd characterize most areas as suburb, so you obviously won't see homeless posted up in neighborhoods.
I would think you can see just as beautiful beaches somewhere in europe, where there isn't a large tourist draw, so the cost of living would be lower.
Man if you're in the Philippines just move to other south east asian countries, I'm from Taiwan and Hong Kong and I freaking love both places. If you really want to get away from the world for cheap you should go live in Koh Samui or something.
Am I the only one from Hawaii that posts here? lol I lived here pretty much all my life and I would say if you make $4k per month you can live on your own but you won't be saving much. What are you good at doing? What is your trade skill? Hawaii is always looking for good people and they know finding locals is next to impossible. However, if you're not one of the best at doing your job you will have a hard time finding a good paying job here. You have to get to know people or make some connections in order to get the good ones. Cost of living is definitely much more expensive to all of you because when you go to Waikiki/tourist locations you are paying top dollar. If you cook home cooked meals you can get by. Food is quite expensive I must say, but if you know the areas where it is cheap (happy hour, local places) it really isn't that expensive. I can find better quality food for much less than a Taco Bell. If you plan to live here I recommend the west side since rent is cheap and a lot of military people live there (you won't be singled out). There are foreigners from Micronesia who pack a one bedroom home with 12 people. It all depends how you feel like doing it. Also, if you do plan to stay here - Locals don't like "haoles" unless you are cool/stay out of their way and always be respectful. If you can do that you should be in good shape and some local will take you in.
Eh brah, I post hir 2, aldo not too ofen. To the OP, I grew up in Houston, moved to CA for college. Found a job a thereafter, got married, then brought my wife and 1.5year old to Hawaii. So relocating is definitely doable and probably one of the best decision we made as a family, however living here is not for everyone for reasons already stated by a couple of the posters.
Yeah.. some of the posts in this thread has made me thinkin' twice about my plan. I just want to experience life to the fullest, you know? Not just a typical life where everything's on the surface.. I'm looking for real meaning, real beauty. Something not many others do. I'm being very vague.. I'm searching for something, but I don't know what. Whoever gave me that reputation with the little comment is a nice guy, btw.
you sure bro? We stayed here in this island for 2 weeks and it's the best i've ever seen. http://luxatic.com/the-amanpulo-res...in-philippines/amanpulo-resort-philippines-8/
Hmm, that's a private island. Never heard of that place. Plus, that's only a place you could live for a week, not for a few years which is what I seek. I've been to Boracay, Puerta, Palawan here. Nothing special, or maybe I'm spoiled?
Since you're here, buy a house in Panglao Island in Bohol, Phillipines. Near the beach, white sand and you can go from island to island and have decent internet connection. Never been to Hawaii so i can't really compare 'em.
