Since we are talking about good service, I do the following: Pizza: usually about $3 Haircut: about $4-5 Restaurant: 20%
Pizza delivery - $5 Haircut - I pay $15. Sometimes he charges $10, sometimes $12 -- so tip is either $5 or $3 -- makes no diff to me. Restaurant -- 15% rounded up in an expensive place (grudgingly). $5 in cheap place (happily).
Most stylists that work in lower-end salons or barbershops make minimum wage, so tips are really appreciated.
I worked at a grocery store in the summers while I was going to college and one really hot day (it was like in July and the temperature was around 100), I took this really old lady's groceries out to her car. She started going on and on about how great of a job I did and that I needed a tip. I told her politely that it wasn't necessary, but she insisted. So, she reaches into her purse and puts a coin in my hand and says, "There, you can now get yourself a coke on your break!" The coin was a f*cking dime. I wanted to say, "Thanks, lady but this isn't the '40s" but I decided that since I didn't want to lose my job, I felt I shouldn't say anything!
20% at an eatery, unless the service is outstanding, then 25%. If the service is downright awful, and stays that way, I get my "tip-o-meter" going in my head... the % starts going down. Door delivery? Usually $5. Hair stylist? Despite the fact that they haven't much to work with, 20%. Sometimes more. I always get my beard trimmed.
Good post. A pizza delivery? ($) I usually tip at least $5 for one pizza. Gas is expensive. Poor guys. Haircut? ($) A buck or two. These people make a decent living. Restraunt? (%)* I use 15% as a base. That said, I'm not a service critic. If my drink is full (especially if I'm drinking beer), and the food is right and brought out in a timely manner, 15-25% depending on the server. If they go above and beyond, they get more. If my food is bad or wrong, but the server is apologetic and does everything he/she can to make it right, I will generally tip 15%. If the service is bad, I won't tip at all. One other thing: If I'm in a big party, and gratuity is added in the check, I won't tip a cent extra. I don't like the fact that the resturaunt is taking money from me. Fast food brought to you? ($) [Sonic, etc.] A buck or close to it. One other thing: Take-out. Sometimes I get the feeling that the people who bring me the take-out when I go to pick it up expect a tip (papasitos, I'm looking at you). Sorry, guys, I'm doing most of the work here, and you don't have to see me again. No tip.
That's hysterical. Ever see the Simpsons where Bart works his a$$ of for this old lady and after a few days of work it's finally pay day. She gives him a shiney nickle or dime on pay day and tells him to to spend it on Moon Pies or whatever. Bart tells the old lady that he can leave without cursing, etc. but that he won't say "Thanks You"... all she hears is Thank you and she says goodbye. Hysterical.
I always tip 15% rounded up to the nearest $5 increment. Sometimes it's closer to 20%, but I try to be a little generous because my friend was a waiter for a long time. If the service is particularly bad, I just do strictly 15%, but never less.
Man, glad i dont live in America. In Australia, it's not as common to tip. I usually tip when I get great service, but otherwise, no one flinches. However, when I went to Thailand I was tipping left right centre. 20baht minimum tip..that's a lot to the locals!! some of them earn just 20 baht an hour (which is less than AUD$1!!) so a small tip goes a long way for them.. I think anyone who travels to countries like that should give back a little... Ohh, the only time I didn't tip was when I was at a beer garden and these guys who work in the toilets start massaging me while I was taking a leak..I told them off and bolted!
Yea - I forgot about that episode. But you're right - very similar situations (well I didn't work my ass off like Bart but you get the idea).
Pizza - 45 minutes or less, 3 bucks. More than that, usually 2. Haircut - $5 on a $15 haircut. My hair dresser is affordable and does a great job. Restaurant - Usually 15-20%. Depends on how much I drink. My wife is the only person that delivers fast food to me.
Never. They get more than minimum wage plus benis. Haircut: $5 on a $27 haircut, she's cool and does a great job on whats left of my hair. Pizza: $2 Restuarant: 15%-25% for good service. I will stiff people for terrible service, but not for late food, thats the kitchen and not the server. Late or terrible food will result in me talking to manager, getting comps, and the server still getting a decent tip.
At home, I always pick up pizza. At work, the pizza place has a different delivery guy each time (probably because of turnover). I don't think they remember us.
