First of all I'm Indian: Pizza: I make my own at home Haircut: always $1, even if it sucks [unless my mom cuts it - then $0] Restaurant: I double the tax [in Texas ~17%]...good rule to go by. Fast Food: Tipping at fast food place...hahahaha Once again I'm Indian...if u tip less than this, then you are probably Pakistani.
tipping more than usual just b/c someone's hot is totally lame. people shouldn't be rewarded for what they can't control. not only that, it doesn't increase the your chances of going home with her. just wasted money.
Actually it has. My good friend tipped a stripper quite well, and they have now been going out for 6 months. The Lord works in mysterious ways, indeed.
i don't agree at all. often times, the amount a person tips is influenced by what he/she thinks his friends/acquaintences will think when they see how much they add to the bill, rather than an honest opinion of the service. for instance, if you were on a first date and you received horrible service, would you announce, "i'm giving a substandard tip". hopefully not, unless you are the brutally honest type and have some other sort of leverage. tipping is a behavior which unfortunately is partially dictated by social mores and fear of being branded a cheapskate, rather than an accurate reflection of generosity. i think the way you conduct yourself in daily life with complete strangers says a lot more about your character (common courtesy, etc.). i've encountered plenty of jerks over the years who pride themselves on being great tippers.
Not to mention fear of retaliation if you are a regular. I would much prefer that waiters get a raise to minimum wage, the increased cost to the restaurant is added to the prices, and tipping is eliminated. Automatic gratuity is similar to this, only the pay is WAY over minimum wage in most cases. Servers are the most b****y people. I don't think I have ever seen another occupation that b****es so much about every aspect of their job.
A pizza delivery? I pick up most of the time, but for deliveries it's $2-3 for 1 pizza and $1 for each additional. Haircut? 20-25% for a good cut. 30+% sometimes. Restraunt? Good service - 20% Bad Service - 10% Fast food brought to you? 0% or keep the change. Hotel maids? 0% and I hide my toothbrush well.
I wonder how long before RocketsPimp or some other server/former server jumps on this post like a dog on a bone... As for me on tipping, I try to tip very well. Never tip on picking up pizza but will give at least 20% sometimes more than 30% for delivery (more than 30 if the pizza comes earlier than expected). Haircuts are usually 30% and restaurants are at least 20%, if service is really good, more than 30%. Tipping at Sonic? I do it very infrequently as I think that is really taking tipping overboard. And like jo mama, I have never understood the tip jars at the sandwich shops, etc. I have even been known to calmly explain to a server on why I am giving them a less than 20% tip. Some people may say I am stupid for doing that and that my food would get spit on the next time, but I think the server really appreciates it when a customer is honest with them. It helps them to try to do better for the next table they wait on. And no, this is something I don't do all the time, but I have done it on occasion.
Here's one... Who puts money in tip jars? I try to put money in there if I have cash, particularly if it is a cool place.
No love for the grocery store sackers? Oh yeah, there aren't any 80 year old ladies on the BBS. We almost got into fights over the little old ladies when I was sacking groceries....
I tip based on service. If I'm at a crappy place, but get great service, I leave a big tip. Great place and lousy service, I leave nothing. I'm the guy who buys the local gas station employees chips and a drink if they get stuck working on Holidays though too.
pizza - keep the change, whatever it may be. haircut - people tip for haircuts??? restaurant - 10-20%...depending on how they do.
