no you would not. im just saying if given the chance said server or bartender would take the chance if given. or at the very least would front you out in front of your friends on how cheap you are. unless that wouldnt matter either because they are just as classless and cheap as you are. and if your such a tough guy. why not the next time ask your server if they look like they would be honest with you about what they think when you pay your bill and tip a penny and see what they say. you probably wouldnt want to do that would you? probably be a little uncomfortable.

No, because patients are already getting ripped off because of the way overinflated costs of treatment. However, a waiter makes almost nothing outside of their tips. As long as they bring my food and drink, then they are doing something. How attentive they are to my requests (refilling a drink or bringing limes if needed) determines how much tip they receive. The only way I wont tip is if they forget that I exist and I end up leaving the restaurant without having eaten any food.
My fiance feels this way. When we get a bad server, she always tells me not to tip but I still do my minimum 15%. Even if the server is a douchebag or does a bad job, they may still think they did a good job and I'd come out looking like the douchebag if I didn't tip. Societal norms are societal norms, I suppose, I just try to be the better man.
Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job. Mr. Blue: Hey, our girl was nice. Mr. Pink: She was okay. She wasn't anything special. Mr. Blue: What's special? Take you in the back and suck your $&*#@? Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.
I hope you non-tippers are not equating the food with the service of the waitstaff and punishing them for something out of their control. If you have ever worked in the food service as a way to put yourself through school, pay your rent, AND have food in your belly. You would tip these people as much as you can for busting their ass for you.
This. I also keep in mind how many tables they are serving, and how friendly they are. Remember folks, thats how they make their money..
I've been a server for 4 years so i know what is like to get paid 2.13 per hour therefore I always tip at minimum 25%. I don't expect customers to tip me that much but at least 15%. Like some others mentioned there are times where you end up losing money. For instance, lets assume the tab is $60 in food and $40 in alcohol for a total of $100 and the customers leave the typical $5 tip. In my case I have to tip my busser at minimum 3%, expo 1%, and bartender 2.5% (exclusively from alcohol sales). So lets assume i give my busser $3, the expo $1, and the bartender $1 for a total of $5. Just like that my $5 dollars are gone and thats without taking in consideration a fee we have to pay for every credit card transaction. Now my hourly wages barely cover taxes. But hey I'm not complaining just trying to educate some of you . At least it pays for my school. P.S. please don't just double the tax because in many restaurants the tax is already included in the alcohol prices therefore in wont appear in your check so in reality you aren't tipping your server for all those trips to the bar.
Sorry to hear, that case would suck for you, but isn't it the system that is messed up? Why do you have to tip the busser, the expo and the bartender, and why do YOU have to pay for credit card transactions (shouldn't that be the restaurant owner)? What if everyone just got paid an adequate salary, and if you provide really good service you may or may not get something on top? I know I am arguing how it should be vs. the reality, and as long the reality is what it is, you depend on the tips (which is why I do tip generously, against what I am preaching here), but I still think the system is messed up. Also, let me ask you - how many tables of that size would you serve on average in an hour? Even if you had just one table, you would already make a pretty good hourly salary with just ONE table if people tip the standard 15 %. If you have four tables, it sounds like even with 10-15 % and with sharing with all the other people and stuff, you make a lot more than one would expect for a job like that.
You are right the system is messed up but like you said is just the way it is and I doubt it will change anytime soon. The sections I get ( and I speak for myself because well restaurants have different methods of doing things) depend on the time, season, days, weather, staff working, pretty much anything affects it. But to give you an example two Friday nights ago we had 18 servers on the floor well because it was tax free weekend ( the restaurant is located by a mall) and as you can imagine many families were preparing for the upcoming school year. That night all servers had 4 tables, which seat 4 people. Now this past Friday night we had 5 table sections because we had less waiters, so I guess anywhere from 4 to 7 tables. As how many tables per hour man is unpredictable because it varies so much but probably 5 to 8. Like I said I make enough to pay for my school and more. But then again rarely does someone tip me below 15%.
I said I would only tip a penny if the service was bad other than that I tip 10% which to me isn't cheap it may be to some people but not myself.
Every restaurant I can remember adds the alcohol in with the rest of the bill and charges tax on it just like it was food.
