All you have to do is talk to them, and/or the manager. These people get weeded out after a spell because it's a crap job, and if they were able to handle it, they wouldn't be treating you that way. I live in a smallish, college town; and yet managers and servers know what's up. If you're right, they have nothing on you. If you know the system, what the (soon to be ex) servers have done wrong, what you've gotten right, then you don't have anything to worry about. Managers will dump a $2.13 server in a NY minute if it means retaining a customer, especially one that knows what they're talking about, will order several courses, and tips well. The "doesn't like you" bit is over the top. Think of this league's worst malcontents. Each of them will go on for hours about how this coach or that coach or this team or that GM just doesn't like them. If you have nothing to be disliked about, then you won't have a problem.
I will never go to a restaurant with friends w/o money ever again. On my way to school one day, and Denny's was doing some Free Grand Slam thing, so we decided to go there. I told my friend I'd give him money when we got home. So we got there and it was PACKED as you would expect so the waiters are working hard. We eat, blah blah blah and then they don't want to leave a tip. I said come on guys just give her a 7.50 tip I'll pay you later. They all decide to get up and leave instead. Made me feel absolutely horrible. I always tip $5 minimum no matter how large the bill or bad service.
Poor service is far too common for some people to alert management each time. Most waiters at your basic cheap chili's style restaurant are selective with whom they give adequate service to, in my experience. It may not be that someone "doesn't like you" but they disliked the people that came before you. People choose that line of work knowing what they make is based mostly on the quality of their service. It's stupid to give poor service even if you assume that someone won't tip well.
10% never go higher or lower but if the service was bad Ill tip one penny call me cheap so damn what.
20% to 25% depending on the service. I try to tip a little bit more if I hear the guy behind me being an a-hole to my waiter/waitress, which seems to happen a lot for some reason. I agree with Kelly. If you've just forked out $50 for a meal, what's the big deal about rewarding the waiter/waitress an extra $10 for good service?
Service is much better in Asia, not crappier. As in MUCH better. And there are NO tips. And I am not talking about countries where workers are exploited. Japan is at least as rich as the US.
I usually throw down a 5 spot. If the service is downright bad, i dont mind tipping them at all. Ive waited tables and i understand both sides. If you dont come and fill my drink, or just come by to check and see if we need something small (maybe steak sauce or a side of something), then you dont deserve anything but your 2.13 wage IMO. Getting busy and not coming to check is one thing, but when your in the corner shooting the bull with a co-worker, thats where you draw the line.
Everybody who does something usually gets paid by their employer. You are a dentist. You do something. Do you expect to get tipped?
Europeans have a much different system. Over there, most of the bartenders and wait staff are paid by their employers. Over in the USA, the only thing the employers pay is a small stipend to cover the employees taxes. The US food and beverage servers live on tips....the Euro servers are paid employees. DD
just so you know if given the chance if i was ever your server, i would beat your ass if given the chance if you left me a penny.
I tipped a nickel once. The waitress never returned to my table after taking my order. Someone else brought the pizza and I had to ask them for my drink, since it was never brought to me. I drank it pretty fast since I was thirsty and was there for another hour with an empty drink. The waitress did finally make it back around with the bill.
oh no doubt. if you receive bad/horrible service do not tip in my opinion. especially if it appears deliberate. dont get me wrong, im not sitting here saying that you should always tip no matter the circumstances. it greatly annoys me though when someone sits there and spouts off like they are proud that they dont tip, and say "why should i not go out to eat often just because i can not afford to tip" thats a horrible excuse. its expensive to go out to eat often, many people spend thousands of dollars a year doing it.
