Then sell everything you own and buy the most expensive ring you can. Now that's love! :D

I have a similar story. I took my grandmothers ring and removed the stone (since her platnum ring was very very dated in its design...not my wife's taste). I then designed a new ring and put my grandmothers stone it. MUCH MUCH less expensive and MUCH MUCH more meaningful.

    My wife loves it!!!

Plus I'm guilt free of buying conflict diamonds.

I'll respond tonight when I get home. Since we have pending legal action against the guy, I don't want to say anything here.

I don't understand why people want to spend such huge amounts of money on a ring. A small one does the same job as a big one. If the woman's friends are going to be judgmental, then she comes from a very shallow crowd...

before anyone buys their fiancee a ring worth two months of their salary, ask her if she'd rather use the money for a nice honeymoon or to buy something cool for your house. Some of us, of course, need to use the two months of salary to pay two months of bills. That does happen. I agree that, if you're too worried, you're starting off with the wrong priorities.

    Exxxxxactly.

Best advice; don't marry somebody who is superficial and materialistic.

I was lucky enough to marry a woman who shares my view on diamonds - they are a huge waste of money - they have zero intrinsic value

all they are good for is to score 'social cool points', if thats your thing, go for it -

Now don't get me wrong, Gents, The_Conquistador has no plans to get engaged anytime soon. The Big Dog's gotta eat, and he prefers the buffet to a la carte. That said, when the menu is narrowed, I intend to spend well in excess of $10,000 on the ring (probably 2-3x). Think about it, this is something that will get extended use -- in my case that means at least 2-3 years. At the time of trade-in (woman, not ring), just re-visit the pre-nup that she signed (while drunk) and re-take possession of the ring. Repeat process as your women age/act up/etc.

I'll never understand how no one cares about the kids dying in diamond mines but will stomp and shout for some damn whales.

Well the reason is obvious... too many kids, not enough whales. Duh.

I've got to read that, it's making me think about that recent thing with Lindsay Lohan showing up at a Debeers opening in New Yorks and said of all the people protesting "“I don’t get involved in any drama.” It makes me laugh because she thinks the forced eviction of native tribesman to those lands is drama but her tiffs with Lizzie Macguire, rumored drug problem, public breakup, crazy ass dad getting arrested, and running out of her movie premiere for not playing her song during the movie does not qualify as drama.

It a superficial world we live in.

Aside/Rant: I can't stand those stupid diamond commericals. It's a self-inflated market via simple advertising - an amazingly well-done deception. In all honesty, rubies and emeralds are worth much more than diamonds, but people have been swooned by the "diamond is forever" baloney. Nevermind that labs can now "grow" perfect diamonds for less than $5/carat. The lab guys and entrepeneurs who wanted to market the idea recieved death threats...

18 years ago, I think I paid 275 bucks. I was only like 20 at the time. She liked it at the time. She now wears a bunch of silver rings, including one on her ring finger.

I'll buy her a nice one eventually, but she says she'd rather use the money of a nice vacation.

I don't understand the point of an engagement ring when a woman already gets a wedding ring.

Seems like an awful waste of money.

My future wife will not get one. That money will be invested wisely.

Got a great deal on the ring I got my fiancee. Spent about 6K altogether, and it is completely worth it, every now and then I catch her admiring it in the light and it meant more to her that I picked it without asking what she likes, I just picked one that I thought she would like.

Where'd you (and any local H-town guys) go? Well, I don't wanna hear the horror stories. Where are the better places out there?

    Not that I'm looking ... or am I ... ???
