How much did race/culture play into the NY/DEN suspension?

I wouldn't say it has anything to do with *race*, but I believe that the suspensions were somewhat biased and weren't fair for everybody.

for some weird reason I think the consequences were in favor of NY. I think NY didn't get a harsh enough punishment compared to the Nugs for the following reasons:

    1. NY initiated the whole thing. actually, NY's coach planned the attack personally. Isiah wasn't even mentioned and it's apparent that he got a free pass

    2. most of NY players who got suspended are scrubs: (Mardy who?, Jared what?, and the midget), on the other hand, the Nugs lost their 2 best players in JR and Melo.

    3. Melo has not excuse for throwing that sucker punch, but to get suspended 15 games, and most importantly, MORE than little Nate is NOT fair.

I think Stern's decision, as usual, is terrible. NY should've gotten the majority of the punishment and dirty Thomas should've been banned from the NBA. instead, nothing happened to the r****d and the Nugs ended up with worse punishment.

is it possible that knicks organization bribed the league? I dont know (very unlikely)
could Stern have a relationship or anything with the knicks management? I dont know (possibly)

Fans don't get punched by the players. Before Detroit/Indiana, fans may have been knocked down if they sat courtside. Maybe JVG would have gotten a suspension if he was black for his fight a few years back hanging on to a leg. It's possible.

you mean baseball the sport that openly allowed roids to flourish?

the nba is trying to promote some level of classiness. baseball is as dirty as can be. with all the scandals in baseball I don't think the nba wants to be turned into trash like baseball has become.

promoting classiness is racist I guess.

Never, because the league has never been predominantly white

So, trying to take somebody's head off when legislated (football) is ok, but when it's not sanctioned it's not ok? That's the same argument that pot is illegal but Oxycontin is legal because the government can collect taxes on it

Black commentators are part of the white merry go round. They can't object if they want to keep their job.

I agree, and there is another thing at work I believe. popularity. in the late 90's the league was still living off the jordan popularity. now the league has fallen behind baseball and football in popularity so it has to do everything it can to keep fans involved, including zero tolerance on violence. I believe in the eighties the league was so popular no one cared about a fight. they were going to go see those teams anyway.

first of all calm down, no one is claiming anyone is racist. racist, and race concious are two different things.

edit: your post kind of proves the point, people flock to baseball regardless. you're exactly right, baseball doesn't have to promote a classy image, the people will come. basketball on the otherhand

Do you want to have a discussion or you want to stop it?

If you don't want open debate, don't open a thread

My mistake. I thought you started the thread. In any event, we can agree to disagree.

Are you saying that you turn the TV off during baseball games Robbie because of the lack of class?

This is not science. It's opinion. There's no one right opinion

after I sent that I thought it might be construed as being a little testy. I guess it's more my unhappiness with how baseball basically destroyed a generation of players with the steroid scandal. they went for ratings and crowds at any cost.

i'm happy with stern and how he cracked down on whining and fighting. obviously, after the horrible pistons indy fight in the stands out of control brawls became a total taboo. this represented the first example of what will happen to players who get into brawls in the post indy/det brawl. I think it was fair and I don't believe race was a factor.

I really don't think that is what he meant. Re-read the original post again.

no because I am trashy. I still love bagwell even though all signs point to him roiding up.

that doesn't mean it was right was baseball did.

Let me add that I don't watch hockey, before somebody says that fans and hockey players punch fans all the time. ;) I actually don't know if the hockey players involve the fans in the fights.

That is not true at all. Fighting is part of hockey and it always has been. they have pads on and it is a full contact sport. Plus, fans are protected in hockey games while there is no wall during basketball games. It would be the same penalty if they were white or black. I'm sick of people always bringing the "race card" into every situation. These guy broke the rules, they were violent, and they endangered fans, simple as that.
