$0. I exclusively use my credit card on EVERYTHING. I am the king of charging $1.99 on my credit card for a diet coke when my friends go out to eat.
Normally 20-30 bucks. Though I did have a $100 dollar bill when I went to see Slapshifter last Friday. Had a mere $25 when I went see orange is in on Saturday. That was enough for the cover, a coke (which the bartender refused to let me pay for) and a Lisa Novak CD. Being a non-drinker makes for a cheap evening at one of my preferred local music haunts.
i try to charge as much as i can and i pay bills online but i still like to have some cash. i usually get $40 when i go to the ATM and then just watch it slowly dwindle. sometimes i'll even go 2 or 3 days with nothing or just 1 or 2 bucks before finally going back. one time i punched 400 instead of 40 on the atm and then managed to compound the problem by misjudging which button to hit and accepted it instead of clearing one of the zeros. so then i had to walk downstairs to the bank and stand in line to deposit about $360 of the cash i just withdrew.
This thread is kind of a coincidence because just yesterday I went through a friend's wallet a couple of rooms away (he knew I was looking through it, at least I think). Well anyway, he had -- no joke -- $524 in cash alone in 100s, 50s, 20s, and singles. Then I looked through the other parts of the wallet; since his birthday was last week, he had at least 5 checks. The smallest was a $50 check and the largest was a tie (there were 2) for $150. The others were either $100 or $75. This guy had over $1000 in his wallet; so not right.
What do you people with credit cards only tip with? You got to have a little cash on you to grease the skids of service and nobody outside of restaurant staff wants the hassle of cashing in or reporting credit card tips. People whose services you may use more than once will appreciate a tip. People getting minimum wage but performing their services happily deserve a tip.
i dress to the left, so i carry a fat wad of cash in my right pocket so that i will appear symmetrical.
i usually like $20-60 but i cc everything. i've never used a debit card. i'm also like mr. clutch and isabel with the no technology thing-no ipod, no mp3 player, no digital camera (working on this), no phone with a camera. i'm very basic. sadly, i think my parents have caught up and passed me even. vegas this w/e baby!! is $200 not enough? i'll be ccing everything i can.
Since I bartend and wait tables, I usually have several hundred dollars on me. I recently moved and there isn't a really close branch of my bank nearby, so I only hit the place once or twice a month. I usually don't really start getting nervous about it until I get over a grand, though I have walked around with as much as $1500 before...
Is that really expected at every Starbucks?!? It's not like they aren't making enough money off the freaking coffee. Sigh. Back to coffee from the gas station for me. At least I know what's expected.
no way...i can see the guy making my coffee. i go to the starbucks at a randall's nearby. there is no tip jar there. there was a real american heroes commercial about gourmet coffee shop workers...and the last line was, "because the only thing more offensive than a $4 cup of coffee, is you putting tip jar out there for pouring it for us."
