I have a pretty good lower body, like Ming, so I can push people away pretty well. But I don't want to add too much bulk in the upperbody, and be slow or something. I want to add some muscle in my arms, though.
This brings up another weightlifiting question, How much do you squat? for me its Parallel Squat: 275 (not my max) pretty weak there, not sure what my max would be Box Squat(if you guys even have done this): 535
I don't remember... somewhere in the 200's also.Probably in the later 200's. Don't do box squat. My calves are huge though. My coach says its the biggest he's ever seen on a white guy. edit: oh yeah, let me say that most of my numbers are coming from about halfway through the school year last year. I lifted more after that, so I probably got a lot stronger.
When I used to work out back when I was uh... young, my max on the flat bench was 255. I did reps of 210-220. Now... um... Uh. Yeah, those were the good ol' days... My favorite exercise when I was in shape was the hip-sled (aka, inclined leg press). I used to do sets of 550-600 on there and maxed out somewhere around 700-725 lbs. That was when I was 5'11" and 170 lbs, so it would kind of freak people out. Nowadays I take my shirt off and that freaks people out.
I've been lifting for a couple of years now... when I started, I was benching about 195 for a couple of reps...I now start my chest workout warming up with 225, and depending on the way I'm training, go up to about 305 or so....I max at about 335, although I only go for max on rare occasions...
Bench Press 5 reps 150 lbs Leg Sled 5 reps 800 lbs I am Mini-Ming Body Frame 5'7" 185 lbs (but it's mostly in the legs and beer gut)
Max lifted - 255 Max set - 200 Regular set - 160 This was 8 years ago. Now, I don't lift anything heavier than 35 pounds (my 3 kids and my trumpet).
I can only bench like 180, that sucks for a guy my size. But I did shoot a 73 on Tuesday, playing the bunkers course twice at Northgate. I think that's better than benching 300.
Back in the beginning of 2001 I was on a 6 month work out period, until I got very bored of it... Bench - Maxed out at 2 reps of 225 Squat - Never maxed out but I did 10reps of 365lbs and the end of my routine once. I am sure I could have done 4 plates on each side, no weight belt My routine was: 10@ 225lbs to warm up 2 sets 10@ 315lbs (3 plates on each side) 2 sets 10@ 335lbs incline leg press - I don't know the weight, it was 6 45lb plates on each side. That was the most that it could hold? At the time I was 5"11 245-250lbs or more, now I am 218-222lbs and I would suck at the gym!
I had shoulder surgery about a year and a half ago, so I go easy on the free weights... I can bench about 235 max. I prefer just doing 3 sets of 10 or 5. I have lost 17 lbs in 8 months(I am 5'10 160) from doing a ton of cardio. In May, I did some fitness test at UT-Austin and they made me max out a few exercises. On bench, I did 235 and one the seated leg press, I did 665 lbs. I couldn't believe that I could press that much, but I have a gymnast's body(I was one for 13 years). I have a big upper body and short legs with decent sized calves.
This is at the beginning of the thread, but I still laugh at my friends rendition of the moment... "Lu-gah, When we was at that party, and I was standing there with five women on my arms and you were standing alone....nobody said, 'Nature Boy, how much can you bench press-ah."
I probably should have started a new thread on this, but it is interesting to go back and see what I was maxing at! Last Friday I achieved a personal best of 240. I am now up to 190 lbs after being 150 from high school to about 2 years ago. I then gained like 30 lbs and have put on 10 lbs since. I have also done 225 3 times, but I don't know how I did that. I am using a pyramid scheme and right now, it goes like this: 1) Warm-up set with 95 lbs, 10 times, just to get my shoulders loose 2) 150 x 10 times 3) 190 x 5 times 4) 230 at least 1 time, try 2 if I can 5) 200 x 5 times 6) 170 x 10 times Unfortunately, with my high metabolism, I find it hard to put on weight which is a way to increase the bench press max (add more mass/weight). I didn't work out today because I was invited to a free pizza lunch, and I never turn down free pizza!
Actually, it has helped me with my softball swing, and I wouldn't doubt it if it would help someone with their golf game. Two weeks ago, I went out with 2 friends of mine and hit 60 softballs for the first time in over 2 years. I very rarely hit the ball deep. I knocked one over the fence, probably about a 315 to 320 foot shot and several others to the fence plus 2 out foul. One of my friends told me that he could tell right away that working out has helped me gain more power. So, if you want to get more on your drives, lifting weights couldn't hurt, IMO. But if you are a finesse guy, maybe lifting could hurt.
