More than anything, the Francis era was far worse than the Tmac/Yao era. I'd rather have a team thats perfectly capable of going to the WCF for 5 years than what we saw post Olajuwon up to the McGrady trade.

The Tracy/Yao era really is tragic. It started with McGrady's and Yao's dominance with a boat load of scrubs in the begining, pitted against some of the deepest Western conferences ever. We slowly added role players that fit into the system and built a very respectable team capable of going deep in the playoffs. Unfortunatley injuries kept us out of contention for a few years, and by the time we had ditched all the scrubs and amazing depth surrounding a core foundation, our stars were no longer good. Its a shame really, all the pieces to the puzzle were here, but table fell out from under us.

I still have hope though. If we keep the same core of players and can turn McGrady's contract into a Joe Johnson or a Chris Bosh, we still have a window of 3-4 years of a 50-60 win team. I really like what Morey has done with the roster. Its amazing to think about how the 2003 roster has transformed into what it is today with super drafting, clutch trades and roster management. My hat goes off to DM, especially when I look at Wade and the Astros.

That's like saying the Clippers were the Rockets because they both played in San Diego.

Now I get the other thread.

This is kinda dumb...because really, what we all know this...

What is the one team you'd have expected to have gotten past the first round that hasn't yet in past 5 years?

Everyone NBA fan knows the answer.

we've actually been amazingly good for a team that hasn't won the first round. i think we've only had 3 bad years, and all 3 involved devastating injuries. and injuries to our main players, too, not just role players going down. every other year we've at least been around .500 and we've even pumped out several 50 win teams. unfortunately the western conference decided to become ridiculous when we rebuilt from the hakeem years and then we only decided to get really good role players after tmac was done (or everyone was injured for the playoffs like last year). that one year we were 45-37 with francis/mobley we were probably about the 11th best team in the league and we couldn't even make the freakin' playoffs. and you practically had to be the 4th best team in the league for a few years just to make it to the 2nd round in the west. and we fell just short.

i wonder where our winning percentage over the last 12 years ranks in the nba because several teams that have made the 2nd round have been pretty terrible most of the rest of the time.

Well that's depressing. Let's make a new question. Which teams haven't won a championship in the last 15 years?

I think I'll like these results more :D

Just making the playoffs in the West was better than a lot of 2nd round winners in the East for most of the past decade.

You've got to put things into perspective.

The thing is that he's carefully selected a time frame to have a whinge about.

It's like saying 'guess which team hasn't won a game this year' after losing 3 in a row at the start of a season.

Yes, it sucks that we haven't made the second round in our last 4 tries - but there are at least some mitigating factors. And yes, it would completely suck if we didn't make the second round this year - personally I think "no Tracy" isn't really an excuse (which would have sounded odd at seasons start).

Wow, that's sad. Even crap teams like the Wizards, Clippers, Warriors, TWolves, Bucks have made it past the first round in the last 12 years.
