I wasn't saying he's a bad player. I just meant that if he had real trade value, the Spurs probably could have gotten something for him, rather than having to give up Scola to dump his contract.

they did get value - a buyoutable contract that would match his. Not that easy to find.

And if Deke signs there is no spot for rookies.

Clippers are desperate for a PG since all they got is Cassell and Mobley. Livingston going down really hurt em. They also lost Elton Brand so they are going to be looking for Big's as well. If nothing else, we just do to the Clips what the Spurs did to us. Make the Clips take these contracts we don't want in order to get Alston.

we could designate mike harris to the d-league, im not sure but i think that will let him stay with the rockets without taking one of the 15 spots

If he is sent down to the d-league by the Rockets, he counts as a roster spot.

Wasn't Mike Harris signed to a non-guarenteed contract? If so, he doesn't count cause no way he makes the team.

Partially contracted for 50,000. I don't think he will make the team either.

They didnt "give up" Scola. That would mean they were intent on keeping him. He was about to resign with his Euro team meaning the Spurs were never going to sign him cuz they had no cap room. They were going to lose him for nothing so they traded him and got a contract to dump which helped them get under the tax, and also made room to try to bring Splitter next year.

By what date do the Rox have to have the roster down to 15? (In other words, by when can we expect some sort of waiver/trade of players?)

Sorry if this has been discussed significantly already; I'm not on the board as much as I used to.

I hope that camp and preseason is competitive!! Guys have to earn their way on the team. Besides Aaron Brooks, I don't think anybody should be given a pass on potential. They only potential requirement is capability to contribute if their number is called on.

    Novak, is an awsome shooter, but if he can't get on the floor this season, then he should be cut. Same with John Lucas Jr. Same with Bob Sura and his expiring contract. Carl Landry should be placed the European leagues or in a developmental league if he can't give you something of substance now {Let's not forget that Landry was drafted long before Scola came on board}

    My likely Starter Quality players:
    Yao
    Scola
    Battier or McGrady
    McGrady or Francis
    Francis or Alston

Quality NBA calibur Bench rotation players:
    James
    Wells
    Hayes

Guys that need a shot to prove they are NBA rotation players:
Butler - SA thought he was ready but he better be ready for Houston
Novak - You better play at least Bullard Quality defense if your a pure shooter
Brooks - we know he can play big time. It's just a matter of time for him.
Snyder - Dunks make highlights, but not rotation players
Reed - Obvioulsy Morey thinks he's worth a look
John Lucas Jr. - barring a trade, he better be able to run the team
Harris - Long Long Long shot to beat out other guys
Landry - With Scola trade, doubtful on the roster (is he signed?)

Contracts that really aren't needed any more:
Bob Sura (Team was keeping him to bring talent in; but after this preseason, I don't think they need him as much any more)

Landry will be more of a quality bench player than Hayes by midseason if he gets the chance.

Clippers signed Brevin Knight last Friday. See this http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2973401 article.

More and more teams needing PG's are signing FA's. Not sure which teams would be interested in John Lucas at this point.

unfortunately, i think morey waited too long to move lucas (to NO for a second rounder) and alston (to MIA for expiring contract of doleac).

now those teams have signed pargo and parker respectively.
    ------------------------------------------------------------

our depth chart looks like this:

Yao Ming - Dikembe Mutombo - Jackie Butler - Jake Tsakalidis
Chuck Hayes - Luis Scola - Mike Harris - Carl Landry
Shane Battier - Justin Reed - Kirk Snyder - Steve Novak
Tracy McGrady - Bonzi Wells - Luther Head - Brad Newley - Bob Sura
Steve Francis - Mike James - Rafer Alston - Aaron Brooks - John Lucas III

22 players, including 2 unsigned rookies and 2 unsigned vets. we must find a way to clear 7 players.

    1. let the rookies play overseas - don't sign landry or newly, but hold on to thier draft rights.

    2. sura retires, jake walks - sura hasn't retired yet because the rockets are keeping their trade options open. he will retire before the start of the new season.

    3. too late to get anythnig for JL3 - teams are filling roster spots. its not fair to keep him here while other FA's are finding homes. cut lucas while there is still a chace for him to land on an nba team.

    4. redundancy - reed, snyder, and harris all give the rockets the same thing. there is only need for one. since snyder has an ending contract and harris' contract isn't guaranteed, reed becomes the lucky guy that les can't afford to cut.

    5. need a big - come to terms with deke or foyle.

Yao Ming - Dikembe Mutombo - Jackie Butler
Chuck Hayes - Luis Scola - Justin Reed
Shane Battier - Bonzi Wells - Steve Novak
Tracy McGrady - Mike James - Luther Head
Steve Francis - Rafer Alston - Aaron Brooks

rafer and luther need to be moved in order to clear up a logjam in the backcourt.

Harris was WAY WAY WAY more impressive than Landry.

I hope Harris makes the team, he has Mario Elie like qualities.

Agreed, I was surprised at how little Landry seemed to have an impact on the SL games. He showed in college that he has abilities, but they were hiding under a bushel during the SL. Not that it means he won't come into camp and impress everyone.

Harris also has an advantage of being in the D-league. I know most people say the DL is all scrubs, but its still extra practice against people who are at or just below roster player levels. I think as time goes on it will grow and develop. The only problem is they need to make it a bit more like the minor league system in baseball, so that you can retain a players rights and have them gain skill sets without releasing them permanently. On the surface it may seem like that will hurt the players negotiation abilities, but if a team invests the time into you by sending you down then you are more likely to remain higher on their radar (imho)
