    Let's do this statistically:

    Houston Oilers: (1960-1996)=2 Championships
    Houston Astros: (1961-2001)=0 Championships
    Houston Rockets: (1971-2001)=2 Championships

4 Championships every 106 sports years.
    1 Championship every 26 1/2 years.

I'm guessing I'll see at least one more; possibly two. [IMG]

Yes, by all means, let's r****d the growth of this team to hang onto someone who either doesn't want to stay or doesn't understand that we already grossly overpaid an over-the-hill icon last year, to the tune of $16.5 million bucks.

Yep. Let's fall into the Celtics trap. In hindsight, Kevin McHale says the Bird-McHale-Parrish-Johnson Celtics should have been dismantled a year or two earlier than they were because the Celtics are now paying the price for that loyalty (there were also tragedies in that situation with Lewis and Bias, I admit).

This whole Rockets "negotiation" feels like a game anyway while a deal is being hashed out on the sidelines. The Rockets won't seriously contend for a year or two, unless they make a really nice trade (somehow).

If Hakeem wants to be on an established team with a chance for good things in the playoffs---Knicks? Raptors? Pacers?---then I say, Godspeed, Hakeem. You will always have a home here. Go be happy.

If Hakeem wants more dough-re-mi from this team, I say, Godspeed, Hakeem. You will always have a home here. But consider last year's $16.5 million your severance pay. Don't let the door slap you in the ego on your way out.

There are teams more desperate for his services (almost-contenders w/o a center, mentioned previously) and if he wants that love (and $$$), then make the trade or let him go.

And there WILL be more Rockets titles in my lifetime.

There have been many times through-out the history of sports that have led to the un-expected. Case in point, (I hate to bring up bad memories) NC State of 1983. Hey, nobody knows what will happen. A Freak injury (no pun intented) to Shaq, a torn ligament by Kobe, or hey a broken leg to whomever (ie K.Martin). You just never know. Is this not the reason why we or they play the games? If it is pre-determined that so & so will win, then what's the point? Lets just earmark the championship for the Fakers oh I don't know for the next what 5-10 years? Come on, I am Johhny Wishbone psychic extraordinar!! [IMG]

Just say you want Dream to stay for sentimental reasons. It is a very simple post to make.

Now I'm beginning to think TheFreak is embarrassed to say he is sentimental in front of us all. [IMG]

Yeah, what kind of fan expects zero more championship in their LIFETIME? I don't know how old you are, but I don't plan on dying anytime soon. I understand that you have your own opinion, but from a fan standpoint that opinion totally reaks. Enough of this negativity.

So because we disagree with you we're "losers"? If you want put sentimental reasons ahead of the future of the organization, be my guest, but Dream isn't thinking sentimental, he's trying to suck as much money out of the organization as he can. But I want you to ask Detroit fans and Boston fans if they are happy that their organization is screwed because they held on to their veterans from the championship era to long. We live in the REAL WORLD, and the "REAL WORLD" says trading players and tying up our cap to re-sign Dream is 1.)Going to hurt the team's chances at improving and 2.)Is bad business.

I'm that "r****d", and "MORON" Bingo. Coming into the season (1999-2000) nobody thought the Lakers would win the title, not even Phil Jackson! He said that he thought it would take at least 1 year for the team to learn the triangle, but that he was shocked that they adapted so fast. Nobody thought the Lakers would dominate like this. Anything can happen, the Spurs 1999 championship run was completely out of the blue. Besides I would rather have a competitive team and a CHANCE to win a title, then to sit back and say "we're not going to win a championship anyway, so what's the use of trying".

Interesting. You argue that the Celtics serve your point as an example, then blame their failures on bad management, ruining your own argument.

PS: Those dominant Celtics and Lakers teams were created when it was easier to hang on to free agents. Jordan was the greatest player in more than 50 years of the NBA.

Even if one accepts your premise that championships are "clumped," over a50-70 year period it's still going to even out unless you have George Shinn for an owner.

I have a great deal of trouble believing that three professional, major-sport teams will have a championship drought for 50+ years. The %'s are INCREDIBLY against it.

GO find a city where that's happened, please, and come back.

Chicago Cubs? Oops, how 'bout them Bulls. Red Sox? How 'bout them Celtics? Mavs? How bout them Cowboys?

Play the percentages. Try to win. Championships will happen.

    Freak,

    Your logic is really simplistic.

First, the 7 champions since 1980 does not take into account the unprecendented period of dynasties.

How many times from now do you think one team will win 6 championships out of 8 years? Do you think those odds are higher or lower than the Rockets winning one more time?

Additionally, the Lakers dynasty of the 80's has nothing to do with the current Laker run. By your logic, the Lakers should not have won again for 30 or so years after Magic retired.

Next, who was the "once in a lifetime player" for the Pistons's two championships? Isiah? He was good, but hardly once in a lifetime...was he that much better than Calvin Murphy?

What about the Spurs? Duncan could be but has yet to reach that level.

There is greater parity in the league now...it seems to fight the idea of dynasties. Look at football...their free agency stuff started a little before basketball's and now you have the Giants and Ravens making it to the Superbowl.

How many different teams won in the 70's? Don't know? Try 9.

1980 started the new era with Magic and Bird coming into their own. That era has ended with Chicago being torn up.

Even though the Lakers currently have a run going, look at how much their roster changes each year. You never know how they will mesh, etc.

Anyway, I am not arguing to keep or throw away Hakeem, just that the meat of your justification for keeping is not sound.

Enjoy the rest of your life...

I'd rather have glory days to reminisce over than be the Utah Jazz or Phoenix Suns.

damn straight. that's why all this talk of building a "perennial contender" pisses me off, everyone wants to build the jazz, they've been contenders for hte past 7-8 years.

What is the alternative? Become the Bulls and build a perrienieal loser? Become the new Celtics and build perrienial mediocrity?

The chances of winning a championship are increased the more you contend.

Oh man, I cant believe I just read that. No offense Freak, but that has got to be some of the worst logic Ive ever read. It really takes a genius to figure out that with 29 teams in the league, the odds of winning a ring are slim. I feel enlightened to know that now. According to your logic, teams should completely disregard improving themselves and just sit back b/c the odds of winning are slim. Lets see, maybe the Rockets can fire their entire scouting staff, unload all their free agents except the untouchable Hakeem ofcourse, totally blow up their team and sit back b/c the odds of winning are slim. 1 in 29 is terrible odds yanno so why even try? RocksMillenium, sorry if I offended you, I was in a preety foul mood this morning when I posted that, anyways first of all,
I don't disagree with you on the Dream thing, I totally agree.
Secondly, all I was trying to say is that even though we all think Steve Francis is the Messiah the odds are preety far against us of regaining championship form, we were lucky in 94 and 95 because we had HANDS DOWN THE BEST PLAYER IN BASKETBALL. But that is not a given now, however much potential Francis may have there are too many others like him out there, I won't try to name all of them. Simply, you don't win titles unless you have the best player in all basketball on your team that given year. The Lakers seem to have that down for the next five years or so. We don't stand a chance, but we'll definately compete and hey who knows we might get lucky.

Freak, I thought I was cynical. Damn.

You've always been like this, though. Houston (the city) sucks. The Rockets won't win any more rings anyway. Etc.

How about some optimism for a change?

Do you believe all this or do you simply throw something out there and laugh as the replies pile up?

    "If" by Rudyard Kipling
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
    If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
    If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

    --Rudyard Kipling

    Thanks, Mango...

I had to memorize and recite that my sophomore year in high school (that was the teacher's way of "teaching" - having us memorize and recite).

I am now having flashbacks...h the horror!
