Its very true, I spend very little money on material things. The internet keeps me entertained for countless hours every day, found me a school, a roommate, sworn enemies, a job, and now a wife. Internet good
In case of emergency, like a healthcare problem or loss of job, it's good to have cash available. Do you at least have investments you can quickly turn into cash?
Ditto on the second quote. I'm fairly tight when it comes to money, but I'm not going to sit at home all the time and not enjoy things with my money, especially when I have time off. Going to a movie and spending $10 or $20 bucks every now and then isn't going to break the bank. And I have to take some sort of vacation at least once a year to stay sane...I'm not gonna go on a 10-day Euro trip or anything though.
I think the stupidest thing people waste money on is drinks at bars, or concessions at sporting events, movie theaters, etc.
I think the stupidest thing people waste money on is a new car every 2 years, followed closely by a house they can't afford.
If we're talking about major expenses, than I agree completely. Buying a new car is simply a poor investment, trading it in for a new one every 2 years so you eventually have a 6 figure debt on a car note is plain idiocy.
Well considering that my wife is without a job and has been for 2 months now, I didn't get a raise this year, and our baby has medical bills over 1,000 dollars that need to be paid, we don't have much in savings at all. Sucks because I have always preached about having an emergency account but sometimes that can be more of a luxury than anything else - at least with me.
nah, sounds like the perfect time to be spending savings...medical bills and unemployed wife. that's what they are for
Been workin' for only 3 years, so I only have about 9-12 months in savings (not including the 401k I've started to build). Let's just say I don't spend much and have no kids...
New car is not too bad if you use it a long time. I have my 97 camry and plan to use at least 3-5 more years. Trade in for a new model every two years, now that is stupid.
Did I also mention that my wife used have her own business and wasn't making squat? We probably did live a little above our means but we are making strides to do better on that. If she can get a teaching job, then we will be in much better shape. Thanks, pirc - all I can do is hang in there and not give up that something will turn up for her in regards to teaching.
I buy a lot of stuff that I don't absolutely need (gadgets/movies/etc) although most of the time, I get plenty of use out of them, although maybe not right away (PC that sat there for 6 months before I started using it, some movies I haven't watched that I bought last month, etc) I factor that in to my budget most of the time, "nerd spending money", and I can easily remove it if I need to save some cash up quickly.
Tell your wife to get a job or start doing the dishes. These are tough times, Manny. You gotta put your foot down.
"If you bring food into my stadium, I will make Timmy grab you by the balls and then throw away your food. No, Timmy. I said throw it away. THROW IT AWAY! OH TIMMY!!! Now, you can buy yourself some Sheriff Blaylock nachos and a soda, and support this team, cause we're ready to be a champion today. PEW PEW!!!"
