Generally, the model for the industry is to offer cheap rates to acquire new customers and then increase their rates on a month-to-month contract when they aren't paying attention. Switching companies or even calling the same company and getting a lower rate is simple and painless and free and will give you instant savings. Fixing your AC or insulation should also be done, but that's harder and costs money upfront, and probably will not even give you as much of a benefit as getting a market rate on your electricity.
Btw, I use way more electricity than you -- about 25,000 kwh per year. That's partly because I have a big house and a big family who spend a lot of hours at home, and partly from poor energy efficiency in the house. But, since I get a very cheap employee rate, it doesn't matter as much.
Ha no. Just a single story, 2,000 sq foot house in the burbs. The A/C unit is older and my wife and I both work from home, so that has a lot to do with it. We also have a pool, so the pump running daily contributes to it. Hopefully it looks better next month now that we ditched Reliant and found a better rate.

you're getting screwed. Green Mtn Energy is a scam. I haven't paid a single bill in nearly 2 years using bounce energy. If you decide to use Bounce, use the code below. We both get $50 off 1359303
I'm with Amigo Energy, paying $0.08101 per kWh. Live in a 737 square foot apartment in the Medical Center and used 507kWh and paid $66.46 for my 7/15/14 - 8/13/14 bill. I live on the bottom floor of a three story apartment building so my unit is fairly well protected from the sun’s rays. My neighbors on the 3rd floor with same floor plan as me have to use a lot more kWh than me during the summer.
