When the 80% are basing their stance of opinions(not facts, opinions) taken from a vantage point from a far away distance it deserves to be pointed out how ridiculous and illogical the majority usually are if put a significant amount of thought into your analysis of WHATEVER situation you are trying to debate.

Im not just talking about Clutchfans here. I see this in alot of public opinion expressed about religion, politics, gun control, racism, etc. Meaning, I have noticed that the 80% are usually basing their opinions on gut feeling and are not truly basing their opinions on facts of logical substance.

Its worth it IMO for the logical crowd to call a Spade a Spade, and question the motives behind the arguments.

So Im just going to call it like I see it right here on this McHale topic-

The only logical explanation I can see here is that there is a significant portion of the fanbase ,that follows the Rockets(not necessarily fans of the Rockets mind you), that for whatever reason just does not like Kevin McHale and that carries over into the way they criticize him as a coach after a loss.

Meaning, I see a large amount of unnecessary blame that McHale takes, and Im not sure why. Could be as simple as favoritism towards the players you want to see play instead of the players that aren't as fun to play in a video game, or it could be based on much more... I dont know for sure, but I do know its completely unnecessary.

I just seems that the criticism almost ALWAYS seems to revolve around player substitutions... substitutions that while controversial(IE playing Anderson late in last nights game instead of Parsons) seem to have ZERO backing as to whether they were the sole reasons why A. the Rockets lost that one game on that ONE decision and B. Have impacted the Rockets overall growth as a team and win total as a finished product at the end of the season.

The logical explanation here almost always seems to be that posters are just upset that he's not playing the player you would play in 2K13. Is that REALLY the reason why a coach should be fired? Honestly? Especially when its debatable that the player you wanted to see play instead would have made that game winning play you "think" they would have made instead.

I have no problem with a fan on here calling a certin debate out as ridiculous, and calling out the posters for questioning the motives behind their hate towards McHale or any other polorizing debate as long as its kept clean and doesn't get personal. There is alot of quality posters that started and have kept this site running. Id like to see it kept that way.

I hope that doesn't make me seem elitist, or that I have a superiority complex. Its just that Im wired that way for some reason... to question things and find logic in my opinions.

There is almost no one on this board qualified to get Parsons a Gatorade much less coach a NBA team.

And how do I know that the difference between the best and the worst in game coach is 4 games total? Because I have done the research. How do I know these "examples" you point to are for the most part fallacious? Because I have done the research. 20/20 hindsight is easy, but no one on this board has ever been in a NBA huddle, much less been in the mind of a coaching staff as they juggle their options. Those of us who have been on this board for years, have wrestled with advanced stats, have read the published research papers on the NBA, for the most part support McHale overwhelmingly as a coach. Most of the critics are 2K12 newbies.

    Stupid post is stupid...

If you had any advances stats you would post them, not talk about them. We might not be qualified for a coaching position, but most of us can see bad coaching decisions when they hit us in the face time and time again.

My two cents, Greg Smith isn't utilized enough. We get crushed with PatPat at the 5. Andersen at the end of the game yesterday.... really?

I haven't given out any examples? What 4 games? To make sample size larger, you might want to go back last season when McHale insisted on playing small ball to close the game at the end of season. If you published any research and have any number, please let it out. I'll be glad to change opinion if evidence shows McHale is good in game coach. From eye test, I haven't seen it much. And like I said, most of us don't even have the opportunity to be a water boy, let along NBA huddles. There will be many more coach pop if all the people get the same opportunity in basketball world. And for the record, don't assume 2012ers started watching basketball since last year. I can't say I'm knowledgeable but as a Kentucky alum, it's hard not to know about basketball.

I think maybe you're always the minority because you're usually wrong???... just a thought.

Using the same methodology you've used:

I've met sooo many people like you that think they are always right, no matter if they are against the majority.

I'm not trying to say the majority is always right, because that just wouldn't be true. But it seems to me [based on the way you've worded everything] is that you always think you are correct...

A great example of something Mchale does is he plays a tweener forward at the 5 and a sf at the 4, a system that has so often let us down. PatPat at the 5 probably (I would have to look it up) gives the worst point differential in the league. Not sure how I would confirm that, but it is based on what I watch every single basketball game.

    1. im not asian, or from asia. im born and bred in houston texas. went to school here all my life.

    2. not everybody who signed up from 2012 is asian and only started watching basketball because jeremy lin started playing.

    3. you and the rest of your kind; older posters who think they are the king of the hill of basketball knowledge and act all condescending to newer posters, dont have the market on supreme basketball knowledge. YOU WERE JUST HERE LONGER ON THIS SITE. THAT'S IT. Sure you're right the majority of the newer posters are asian noobs who only started watching because of Lin, but not all. Dont look at the join date and be quick to drop the LOF LOOK AT HIS JOIN DATE when you cant offer a proper rebuttal and use it as some kind of gun to wave around online to ppl you disagree with.

    4. Was mchale ever a great coach in minnesota? has his actions and record as head coach of the rockets indicate he's a great coach?

    5. im pretty sure i can find a lot of older posters who dont like mchale as coach. Are 2012 posters the only ones that have a problem with mchale?

    6. get off your fake im a true rocket fan because i was here on clutch fans before 2012. You're no moral authority on rocket knowledge just because you were here before 2012. You could be talking to a long time rocket fan who is just new to clutch fans, very different from new rocket lin only fan.

There may be some loses that could be wins with different players playing, but that applies to all coaches. If McHale played rookies that would not help us win even though they have upside. The word upside implies they still are learning the game. Also if the coach was someone everyone loved and made all the same decisions, I imagine the complaining would diminish.

I love Mchale, just not as a coach. That said, I wouldn't argue to fire him. He does a lot of things well. There aren't tons of affordable options on the market so I will support Mchale until I think we can do better.

That being said, one could argue that Sampson did a better coaching job. I don't think he owned the position enough though, didn't show assertiveness

Yeah, I'm not going to stand here and say that McHale is infallible or anything but the last 40 games have been a learning experience for him too. I'm willing to cut him a little slack. I generally like that he goes with the hot hand at the moment and rewards the guys that playing well on any given night. I think he's getting better at actually playing match ups (which I would agree is a weakness), the gambit of having Delfino guard the PF has worked a few times. But overall, turnovers have been the biggest contributor to our losses. There have been many games where we've been within striking distance with 2 or 3 minutes left and then turn it over the next 3 possessions. That's not the coache's fault. That's on the players.

I don't always agree with McHale's substitutions/rotations, but McHale is not the problem. Bottom line.

If you're going by what would have been perfect maybe the Rockets win a game or two more. Maybe. But perfect does not exist. Not a single coach is.

"Consequently, it appears what Adam Smith thought about management in 1776
applies to most NBA coaches today. That is, most coaches do not statistically impact
player performance and subsequently most NBA coaches are essentially principal clerks."

Yep, that is about it. Can we drop the McHale discussions?

Sorry - away for dinner. And that is what I meant when I said that the McFail arguments are ignorant - not based on any facts whatsoever. Except your own personal opinions, drawn from the personal desire to be "superior" to the coaching staff. That boys, is all that there is from your side.

This basis is as ridiculous as most of what else you have said. According to you, even you or I could go out there and just be "principal clerks" as the coach and it wouldn't make any statistical difference. I doubt that.

I also noticed in your supposed thread to end this discussion and put a complete end to any discussions of McHale's negative coaching attributes, that you FAIL to address the key comments in that thread that use the same report to complete discredit everything that you are claiming in this thread and that one.

Basically, you are still in the minority with your opinions and your so-called proof is nothing more than junk that actually supports that 80% that say how coaches allocate time among their best players is the most significant thing that they can do to impact their teams wins and losses.

    CASE CLOSED for you homie.

Better question would be....How many games out of 31 would we need to win to make the play offs? I reckon we need at least 20 wins 11 losses. Doable?

Oh, no... Im wrong quite a bit. Just ask my wife... I get reminded daily that Im constantly wrong about things.

The only point Im trying to make it that just because the majority has an opinion doesn't mean that it shouldn't be questioned for logic.

I dont think anyone is trying to argue that McHale is the greatest coach the NBA has ever seen. Its only that he's not nearly as horrible as some fans make it seem, and if you look at the overall job him, the assistant coaches, the front office, and the players have done at this point with this team, it largely outweighs any controversial substitutions he might make late in games that really just debatable as to whether they have even affected wins in those cases.

-As to your opinion that "the small ball lineups must have the worst point differential in the league" I would be interested to see what someone comes up with as far as data to support that argument.

Just based on the eye test without researching basketballreference.com, I can tell you that this year more than previous, the Rockets have rarely gone without Asik in the middle to close out games, and when they have not, its usually been when the Rockets are behind trying to make a run late in games by creating a mismatch.

So while, yes, the small ball lineup might not have won the game for the Rockets, they probably weren't winning the game to begin with and the small ball lineup was a tactical move to try and force a mismatch to make a run. Not sure why this is such a huge issue to fans give the fact that the team is coming from behind anyways.

Using the small ball lineups as a way to bash McHale just doesn't make any sense to me because you are pretty much saying that Asik isn't being used the majority of the game... which isn't true. Anytime Asik is in the game, its hard to argue that they are "going small" by any stretch, even if they are playing Parsons at the 4 who at almost 6'10" is hardly what I would call small by NBA standards for a PF.

The only game I can recollect recently was the Miami game... and you know why they went small late in the game... because Miami had gone super small with their PF's killing the Rockets with the corner 3. They also needed quicker rotations to overcompensate for Lebron and Wades penetration that forces the defense to need to rotate much quicker.

As for Asik's minutes over the course of the season, so far this month his MPG average has jumped up from 30MPG to 35MPG. You can't say the Rockets are over-using the small ball lineup with Asik is playing 35 minutes per game... that just doesn't make logical sense.

Going small when the team is trying to make a comeback is hardly an argument I find valid against the termination of Kevin McHale. Especially when its so heavily embrassed by the front office and the entire NBA... including the NBA champions from last year.

While many of you want to make this thread about whether or not to fire McHale, his overall coaching skills, how nice of a guy he is, etc., the thread is clearly stated to be about his "substitution and rotation" patterns, and whether or not you "think or believe" that it could be better and would have won us more games this season.

That totally assumes that he was the coach the entire time, not someone else and that everything else is the same.

While I stated my "OPINION", the poll clearly gives the option for those who disagree to clearly state that we would not have won any more games if McHale had used better or different rotations and substitution patterns...again, the whole point of THIS THREAD.

If you are upset about what someone else wrote in another thread, that's fine, but that's not what this thread was created to address. But of course everyone is free to discuss whatever they want whether it is the original intent of this thread or not. Just saying.
