If that's the price to be paid for social progress, which is inevitable anyway, so be it. Whether republicans like it or not, their side is on the wrong side of history. It's best to accept that and move on.
Sure....... if by both parties you mean 80% Republican and 20% Democrat. The Democrats have their own issues with arrogance and complacency...... but when it comes to spreading a message of hate and intolerance and splintering groups; that has been largely the domain of the Republican party.
And this is why "we cannot heal" You see what you want to see and create a false equivalency. It doesn't matter what you "see" - the fact is that one party is completely broken of its own accord and more or less rejects reality in favor of its own reality. And that's not going away after today. The same reality deniers will be there.
Actually if Hispanic turn out is as much a factor as advertised, that could be the first part of healing if Republicans want to remain a national party. We will see how this election turned out soon enough.
People aren't worried about jobs, Healthcare system but how to get rid of immigrants or just any minority. A black comedian once said if THEY get rid of the Hispanics, guess who's next? All this election does is show us how alive racism is. I work in the medical field, Im the one wheeling sick people out of their cars into the facility and treating them.... eh I'm done talking.
Here is a piece from 60 minutes this past Sunday. It made me think of this discussion. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/60-minutes-american-voters-on-trump-clinton/
To put a little nuance on this, there is plenty the Republican party is arguably right about. But there are some principles that should not be compromised. We can compromise and come to terms on immigration, for example, but not with the idea that immigrants are bad people.
Social media has empowered stupid people and dumbed down the whole political process. That's the real reason voter turnout is going to be so high for this election.
Well as I see it, we're getting rid of a REALLY divisive president and if polls hold up we'll be getting a Democrat in the White House that doesn't actually stand for anything and a Republican controlled congress. There shouldn't be any major barriers to having the Republican congress and the White House finding areas that they can compromise and agree on with a person like Hillary in office. That alone should go a long way towards the country healing.
You can't heal stupid. Stupid people will continue to exist. Powerful people will continue to manipulate stupid people into believing and saying stupid things.
Please do tell us more about this great Divider-in-Chief you speak of. Really, every time you open your mouth it looks more and more like this is your first election.
I am heading out for the day, but before I head out, I want to wish everyone one here a safe night. No matter who wins tonight, I pray our country can heal, and that whomever takes over as our president makes choices to heal our nation and make our world a better place. God bless you all.
We need a bunch of celebrities and musicians to come together with a special song and perform/record it. Then, donate all the proceeds to bringing down the national deficit.
your last sentence is especially true... i attended a great speech by Dr. Ray Perryman recently and he said the exact same thing, the art of deal-making is gone. the days of holding a closed door meeting late at night and conceding bits and pieces in order to compromise for the greater good has disappeared. and he didn't mince words - there isn't enough pork anymore. people are motivated by simple economics, supply and demand, to get a little you must give a little. but today's political climate makes it almost impossible, particularly with the far right/tea partiers who value ideology and rejection of all things politics as usual above all else. it's made it impossible to compromise because the underlying message is we want it all or nothing at all. i'm sure those on the left have some responsibility as well but the far right has made this their calling card and wear it proudly... it's literally destroying politics as we know it and many of them are happy about it. it's frustrating.
Expand your base so no one can accurately describe your party as mostly older white people. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
