Are there any programs out there that would allow me to draw up an image of the globe with low sea levels? Alternately, what would the earth look like if the sea level was raised by a few hundred miles?

Are there any places on the net that will help me gather visual topography information? I'm trying to do research for what the earth would look like under varying circumstances. Any ideas?

Never thought about that... I'd be interested to see a model of what the planet would look like without water on it at all... if you find anythign like that be sure to post it! :)

Just get a world map that shows both dry land and underwater topography and then color the blue parts brown.

the highest point on earth is only about 5.5 miles above sea level. If water rises "a few hundred miles" we'd all be ****ed.

Global warming people kill me. Because without it, the earth would eventually freeze out. Better to have a little more water and bad weather than to have a frozen planet and no life. when people realize that water is good, we'll all be a little smarter if you ask me.

Also, without water, you'd have to imagine the lack of pressure would allow those deep ocean cavaties to rebound a little. Who knows. I guess some people believe there would be no plate movement without it. I guess that is possible given that the pressure of water may increase plate contact with the hot liquid layers. not sure. Planet was likely dry at one point. until we got splattered by the ice asteroids. I don't know what it looks like without water, but for the most part it's round no matter what.

You should also note, that without water, temperatures on the earth would be much like variance seen on the moon. Hot in the day and cold at night. Just Like in the deserts of Arizona. Water helps to stabilize the temperatures around the earth. Without it, there is less stability.

Thank you all for your replies (minus the sarcastic ones). :p

So with less water, the earth would not go back to a mega-continent as it were with Pangea (sp.)?

With more water, the highest mountainous regions would become islands? If we don't see any major shifts in the plates...

    Fascinating!

I think all we need to know about rising sea levels is explained here.
