I agree with eating lots and lots of protein. However, for the last three years I have been running and lifting wieghts. I have not seen a lot of results. IMO you should either try to gain mass or lose the fat. Doing both together is probably possible, but very difficult. Just gain the mass first and then trim off the fat.

If you want to build muscle mass but lose some fat, then my advice is you want to lift heavy weights focusing on your main muscle groups, do cardio(jog/ride the bike), and count calories(maybe 1500 per day in balance...say 50 p/30 c/20 f). After your finished losing the fat you don't want, then switch over to a low reps/heavy weight workout three times a week focusing on the main muscle groups, cut way back on cardio, uppity up your protein by a good amount(some say 1 gram per 1 lb of body weight but it doesn't have to be quite that drastic), and up your calories(which will mostly be more protein). Protein shakes are a must during this time(whey with added l-glutamine). You could always do the short-cuts with the creatine and other crap that has potential side effects but I don't recommend it. Don't forget to keep your body fueled by eating 6-7 times a day for both the weight loss and the mass building periods.

That's a lot of work...man. I lost a good 40 pounds doing the weight loss routine above. Building muscle doesn't really go well when your trying to lose weight. I had significant gains in the weight I could lift and my muscles did become more defined and grew some. But, they didn't grow nowhere near what they would have had I been doing the muscle mass building routine.

Of course, I reached close to my goals, was very fit and trim, and then burned out. Then, I went through the period of laziness and unhealthy eating. Now, I basically need to start over. I tend to repeat these same damn patterns of getting healthy/in shape and then falling apart. Repeat, lather, and rinse. I'm just now starting the cardio back up again and trying to watch what I eat again.

Oh...and keep logs of your work-outs. Logs = motivation.

    I'll shut up now.

I probably should have mentioned that, yes, it is gonna cost a LOT of money following my 'master plan' - paying for 6 meals a day, drinking milk constantly, and paying for gym access or workout equipemnt. It especially sucks to pay for all that and be miserable for the first two months.

And, yes, as I mentioned, if you follow the diet I indicated, you will get fat (probably a fat gut), and not muscle tone. Diet and exercise together is the key.

Well no wonder he got angry. What were you doing sticking your fingers in his holes???

    Anway...

Yeah, so like I could use this. You know I am 5'9" and 115 lbs.

This is much better than February when I was 90!

I reallllllly need some training (weight and strength) help. I would start with a trainer now, but I'm goinna have corrective chest surgery on the 7th:( :( :( .

And this will be the 2nd time.

But, I do look so puny and skinny, although I've gained 25 pounds and have grown about an inch. Once the doctors clear me (they say about 6 months before I can do "intense sports"), I plan to get into the gym. I can't see myself eating that all day, though!!!! I tried Boost for a while, but I ended up letting it go down the sink.

    Feed me.

Yeah I think your plan sounds fine to me. x_trepidation_x's plan takes too much time for every workout. I just don't have the time to do both together. And since the fat is not such a major problem for me (I'm still skinny except for the belly), and I really would like to see some muscles (the sooner the better :D ), I'll gain mass first and worry about the fat later.

Opening up your body is always not a good idea. Even a minor operation.

Red is a numbnutt and I am pretty sure he was being sarcastic. :)

Anyways, be sure your body gets lots and lots of protien. And I mean lots! Eating six small meals and drinking plenty of water and milk is also suppose to help.

They say that eating several small portions is healthier cause it is easier on the stomach to digest smaller portions.

However, spending your time eating all day is not much of a life at all. All, I can suggest is that you can strive to have your ideal body but in the end, I'm not sure if it is even worth it.

Also, what if you are lactose intolerent? :D

    hahahahaha

I think it woundn't do you any good to have your stomach running all day ... give it some rest & perhaps give your body some rest too...

well, I been working out for almost 5 yrs, and I can not get my weight over 165 lb, no matter what, and no matter how many meals I eat, my body fat stay around 5% the whole time. recently, I changed my work out plan, and it worked tremendously well, about increasing 1 lb of pure muscle per day. ok, here is what I do:
I break down my work out to smaller parts. for example, on monday, I would work out ONLY chest, Tue, only work out on arms, and Wed on lower body, take day rest on Thursday and go back on chest the next day. each day, I only work out less than a hour but with heavy loads. and if you want to gain weight, use dumbell instead of machine and bars. bring in a gallon of water during the work out and try to finish half by the end of the work out. I drink at least 1 gallon of water every day. Protein drinks are VERY helpful. you have to start to drink it right after the work out. I just couldn't stand the taste of protein bars, so I buy those cans of protein drinks, taste really good and easy to swallo. I just can't eat like 6 meals like the books suggest, but I eat for about 4 meals per day, and I eat one meal before sleep. what I found most helpful to me is to eat like 2-3 glasses of Milk before sleep with Cereal helps muscle building. (NOT THE BRAND shown in my PREVIOUS pic) the cereal I bought called Protein plus, it taste just like regular cereal but contains 12 g of protein in it, you can get it in trader joe. and milk helps you sleep also.
