Now that's REALLY damning him with faint praise...

Seriously, I wouldn't worry about his defense.

Van Gundy is just going to transform everyone into a defensive demon overnight.

Next season, when the time comes to choose the All-Defense NBA team, expect it to be loaded with Rockets.

As matter of fact, Steve is about to take over Artest's place as the league's premiere swingman stopper...

    D'OH!

nothing serious, this just always gets on my nerves. Is there a non white player that he compares to? Steve Kerr (+6 inches?) Matt Bullard (-5 inches?). I mean, common, Craid Ehlo? There's a reason Ehlo is in that Jordan highlight, because he was an excellent defender and always chosen to guard Jordan.

It's not a big deal or anything and I don't know his game enough to make comparrisons, but for those of you who call him just a straight gunner with good fundementals at 6'6" why not site Dell Curry for once, or for those of you who say he can put it on the floor a little, mention Lucious Harris or something. Whatever, just a pet peeve.

Glen Rice is a natural small forward who's still a good shooter and competent passer who's knees are failing him.

The Polish Rifle is a natural shooting guard who's a fantastic shooter and still capable of running up and down the court consistently - and giving us another shooting option off the bench.

We probably overpaid a bit, but it's three years, and he's a good bench player who can occassionally spot start at the 2 or 3 and give you some good shooting. He's nothing more than that, but he's nothing less.

you are right... we should not limit our comparisons based on a player's skin color. it's a somewhat natural tendency to lump "like" things together, and skin color happens to be a characteristic that people use. if we are talking about him as a basketball player, and not a white one, we should consider other pure shooters and throw the likes of Tracy Murray, Dell Curry, Dale Ellis, et al into the conversation... but I digress...

The player currently who I'd compare him to is an aging Steve Smith. I bet you they would put the similar stats if they played the same minutes. He always had a stroke, but in recent years Smith has turned himself into a deadeye shooter. Like Piat, he is crafty enough to fake a guy and hit some midrange shots or drive to the basket. He doesn't dunk a lot either. Plus they are both 6'6".

I would compare Pike to Steve myself but not the aging one.
I think Pike is better than Steve right now. He might not be as good as Steve was in his prime but he could be an 8 to Steve's 10. Pike actually shoots higher perctage too!

Disagree... Remember, Pike has only averaged 8.6 points over his career. Smith put up 13 ppg as recent as 2 seasons ago.

There is no comparison between Piat and a Smith in his prime. The dude was a stud. All-Star, Dream Team Olympian, scorer, passer, defender, post player, carried his teams. The guy did it all. His bad knees have slowed him down. Pike is a good player and will help us a lot next year, but Steve Smith was one of the top players in the game in his prime.

I said Pike is better than an old Steve/ this yr Steve.
Eric is as least as good as the Steve of 2 yr ago .
    Pike avg 9.7 pts/ 22 min with better FG% vs 13.6 pts/ 31.4 mins for Steve 2 yrs ago.
    Steve's Career 821 712 33.1 .441 .355 .843 1.30 2.20 3.50 3.4 .85 .32 2.00 2.60 15.5
    Eric's Career 616 238 20.5 .438 .402 .841 .80 1.70 2.50 1.1 .57 .17 .88 1.60 8.6

I said Eric is an 8 if Steve is a 10.
It is not unrealistic to think Eric'd he'd get 13.9 pts if he'd played 33 mins/ game.

    Thanks ragingFire.

I agree with your synopsis of Pike vs Steve Smith. Good work.
