I had a buddy that lived in a $450 two-bedroom apartment in Sharpstown about 3 years ago, and I stayed with him for a while. The "ghettoness" is there, but it doesn't translate into danger. Often you'd be kept up by loud music at night, and there were lots of people loitering, but I never felt like I was in danger, and was never robbed or mugged.

The Gulfton area has been documented as the most crime ridden area of town (by zip code). I believe 59/Westpark is a block area from Gulfton. I've worked in that area and it was one of the only areas of town I worked where I was concerned for the safety of myself and my vehicle.

I live on Gulfton and Chimney Rock.

The apartment complex is gated though and security doesn't let any non-tenants in without a proper ID. It feels like little Mexico if you go a block away. I'm always kind of wary in the area, but you drive 3 blocks north or east and you're in the Galleria-Bellaire area.

    great.

9 months and I haven't gotten capped yet.

I guess I'm living on borrowed time.

i work as undercover loss prevention for a pharmacy and we travel around the city to the worst parts. My two cents is Sharpstown is a mix of hard working low income people then you have those "thugs" that just have nothing better to do with their life. Im 22 so im not an old fart im just speaking the truth. Where EXACTLY are you looking to move? A couple of blocks makes a big difference.

south of i-10, west of 288, inside the beltway. that's a huge area with many many choices... my only other setback is the fact that i don't want to spend more than 500ish/mo on rent.

how do i go about finding available garage apartments besides driving street by street?

You must live in Lantern Village, Growing up, my cousin lived there and i would always go to Gulfton Park to play B-Ball.

I lived in that area my teen years mid nineties, Not the best place to live in the world but the reputation it gets is totally out of hand.

I do and it really isn't that bad.

Lantern Village is like a city within an apartment complex the way they screen both potential tenants and visitors. You have to make at least 4 times your monthly rent so its not exactly low income. Its mostly Pakistani, Indian, Asian, and African immigrants with a mix of some regular low income folk and college students.

As long as there is tons of security always roaming the area I don't feel unsafe. But lets put it this way, when I drive outside I don't even feel safe sitting at a stoplight until I'm on the freeway.

You really can't beat the price here though. I share a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment and my monthly rent is about $430 (all bills included, counting power and cable)

A friend of mine has a townhouse on the sharpstown golf course. It's pretty ghetto, but he hasn't gotten jacked or anything yet. If I couldn't afford more than $500 for rent then I'd just move back home if I were you.
