I do agree that Rumsfeld runs his mouth sometimes (sometimes?). But if I remember it correctly, the open diplomatic warfare only started when Schroeder pledged not to support ANY American action regarding Iraq just to get votes (low road even for a politician) and France quickly concured. I advocate diplomatic nuance on the part of the americans, but that, bottom line, is just a tactical issue. European statesmen, at least responsible statesmen, should know better than endangering the long term alliance for one election victory.

Did anyone see when Jay Leno did the "French Army Knife" on his show a couple of weeks ago? It was a play on the famous Swiss Army Knives. Jay Leno brought out the French Army Knife, then he started showing some of the features, normal stuff like a knife, screwdriver, etc...Then he's like, but the most unique thing about the French Army Knife and he pulls a big huge white flag out of the French Army Knife. :)

I thought Bush told the world in the spring of 2002 Iraq was next, with or without UN support.

And Germany had elections in the fall of 2002, where Schroeder ran on a no war platform. At the same time, Bush was running a war platform for our mid-term elections.

Can't you 'not support war' by abstaining from the vote, or voting 'no'? Why do you have to talk about a veto?

So these people are making policy based on how hurt their feelings are?

To contribute to the thread topic, here in Austin they were advertising on the radio in the morning that they would give you free BBQ at Rudy's if you came out there this weekend and brought some French products (may have just been wine, don't remember) to dump out. Austin's a pretty liberal place too. I was surprised that this anti-French stuff was that out in the open.

Also, I guess it's cool for the French to hate America, but when US citizens start to notice and do stupid little anti-France things, now it's a big deal?

I guess I could've gotten these 4 sentences into one post instead of 4. What can I say, I'm a little slow. What a beautiful day.

I'd like to think we aren't as petty, especially our government. But I guess you're OK with that.

Most, if not all, of the European media had been pretty anti-US, not to talk about the intellectuals and politicians on the left. "Old Europe" anyway. So the Europeans being anti-American is nothing new here and easily explained.

The U.S. movement now, is really interesting to me because much of it seems to be really spontaneous. Congressmen renamed the french fry (I know, and unequivocally concede that it is silly) because they got the idea from constituents in their districts. A person not raise in American culture ( I, for one) would be really impressed with how much ordinary Americans take the initiatives in their life. The inherent American optimism?

No. Instead, we will do anything so long as we are allowed to keep eating fried food.

    And all hail to KFC!

Just want to point out most authentic French dishes (the good ones , anyway) are heavily laden with lard or cream, too.

My sister teaches high school French, has a master's in it, and has been to Nice and Paris.

She was going to go again this year, but has cancelled her trip.

To me, that speaks volumes because she has ALWAYS taken up for those assholes as long as I have known her.

What I want to know is how the devil France even got a seat on the Security council.

When the UN was formed, they were still smarting from 5+ years of Nazi rule.

I have found the French people in major metropolitan areas to be arrogant and stand offish.

I had a meeting in France and the CEO of the company actually explained to me that it was more polite in France to be 15 mintues late for a meeting.

If you are on time you are pushy, and if you are early you are REALLY pushy.

    WTF is that?

The French are irrelevant and it is high time that someone reminded those weenies of their irrelevance.

i don't agree with much that DD says, but i gotta agree with that. what the hell did they do to get on this council? unless it's "oh damn, france's security is about to take another ass-whoopin", france and security shouldn't have been in the same sentence when the UN was being formed (or did they form the security council at a time when france hadn't been recently beat down?).

and dammit Dixie Chicks. I really like the Dixie Chicks, one of my favorite groups ever, and i like bush (voted for him), and i really like Texas. why did natalie have to go and say that. now people have called KILT all pissed off and kilt won't play them for now. luckily i go back up to austin after spring break but i'm thinking the same thing might've happend on KASE and whatever the hell 98.1 is. any austinites who listen to country know? at least i still have the badass "Home" cd to listen to.
