Going to a couple of playoff games the last time we did some dammage, was amazing. I had never, and still have never, been to anything like those games with the roof closed. So loud, and crazy. Had some a damn good time. (my last game was the one before the 18 inning one).
i hate jim edmonds. i booed him last night. that catch he made of ausmus' hit in St. Louis in game 6 of the 2004 nlcs killed me.
Yes. Brennamen announced all the Astros playoff games on Fox. Joe Buck was exclusively used for the AL games (since most of them involved the Yankees or Red Sox).
That's one thing people who don't like baseball will never understand. When it matters most, when your team is playing important games during the regular season and on into October, you literally live and die with every single pitch. One pitch can change the whole game in a second. Of course I feel similarities in basketball and football, too, but you can't say that baseball is not exciting. Being there in MMP when Lidge was about to close it out in the NLCS...there was an energy in the air I've never felt before...it was truly magical.
I was at that game. It was the greatest sports moment I've ever personally witnessed. I couldn't BELIEVE how loud it was in MMP. I thought the roof was going to blow off when he hit that homer. Simply amazing.
Very, very true. Baseball is truly magical come playoff time...if your team is in it. Those were fun times in Houston. There was a small group of people who were doing backflips in my neighborhood when we made it to the World Series.
Its the inherent nature of the game. You can see things coming (for the most part) in Basketball and Football. Sure, there are amazing shots, or great drives, or singlular passing plays (in both sports) that stand out... but nothing causes the pure drama of the "unknown" that baseball does. A star player can crush the ball or strikeout at a pivotal situation at any given at bat (see Albert Pujols game 5 and game 6).
Playoff baseball = EVERY hitter is feared. Every pitch is so important. Y'all don't know...during those years, I'd think about what hitter has power, what they are capable of, etc. I'm baseball 1st, so all this holds special meaning...scary times when some situations come up...good times winning one game...bad times win games are lost...etc. Can't wait to contend again...you guys won't hear the end of it from me.
My favorite part about those playoff runs though was that my 8th grade Science teacher gave us no homework on Astros game nights, and when they made it to the World Series, we got a free 100 test grade.
Finally getting past the Braves was such a relief after all those years of torment. Kent's HR was ridiculous. I was there for the Pujols game and also for the Double Play game (Chronicle interviewed me after the game as a fan in the street). I live in Dallas so I had to take time off to catch the playoff games, but it was worth it. I also went to WS Game 4, sucked, but was great to see a WS Game. Me and a buddy drove to St. Louis for Game 6 in '04 as well, last second deal, that was memorable. I went to the Rockets Jazz/Blazers/Lakers/Mavs series games as well. In comparing the two sports, playoff baseball is a different beast. Every pitch feels like a last second free throw. That's why baseball is my favorite sport. The anxiety is unreal.
i remember skipping class at UH to watch a playoff game vs the braves at the bbq place in the university center while sipping on pitchers of beer. also the teacher starting his class late while everyone watched a game in the lobby of the Bauer College of Business. great times.
"It's ****ing hu...frikken huge, sorry, excuse my language." -- Brad Lidge on national tv, wildcard clincher postgame, 2005.
2004 I was at game 3 NLDS (vs Atl) when Backe pitched a great game and Beltran hit a 2-run shot in like the 6th. Hundreds of people were dressed in Bee Costumes and when Beltran was rounding the bases they played killer bee noises over the loud speaker. The loudest I ever heard an Astros game. 2005 while at a Texans vs Titans game they showed Ausmus game tying homer (gm 4 NLDS) off Farnsworth in the bottom of the 9th and Reliant stadium went nuts.
I remember watching the games of the Braves series in 2004 and 2005 in the UC Satellite. That place was packed.

I was in the nosebleed section down the first base line towards the corner of the stadium where the roof retracts. You could feel the stands sway when that hit went off--it was amazing and my best sports memory. It was surreal to look down at the league score board below the Crawford Boxes and see it entirely empty except for NY/BOS which we were keeping an eye on to see if the Redsocks were going down. Leaving the stadium that night was like nothing I have ever expereinced, my buddy and I screamed "Lets go Astros!!!" at the top of our lungs with 44,000 fans walking down the ramps from the upper deck untill we had no voice left.
