Don't normally start threads over here, but actually struggling with some questions. Kind of afraid of the poo flinging, but here we go:

The US is widely considered the number 1 country in the world (by far) in cutting edge medical research, published studies, and advancement.

I agree that this doesn't necessarily translate to affordable medical care and there is room for improvement in our medical care systems.

The question(s): Will the US be able to maintain its leadership in medical advancement with some of the more socialized medicine proposals on the table by various candidates?

Is the amount of innovation in the US generated by the more capitalistic medical industry (for profit), or is it driven by a more supportive governmental system?

Is the US populace subsidizing medical advancement with the rest of the world's social medical policies?

I'm personally trying to balance the need for the US citizens to have more access to medical care that is not as expensive, while at the same time, continuing to drive medical advancement at the current rate. Looking for some thoughts...basically...is it a zero sum game? Can you have socialized medicine but also drive medical advancement at the current rates?

Of course there is a balance, but I believe the balance right now is too far to the side of the medical industry.

Good care for all or the best care for some.

It's not that hard to chose the best option.

That's a false dilemma. Hospitals can't turn people away, so everyone was getting the best care to begin with.....forcing poor people to pay insurance premiums doesn't change that or make it any better.

The "best care" that the US provides isn't at hospitals when people are desperate because their health has gone so far downhill that they were forced to go to the ER. At that point, it's far too late.

They still benefit from medical advances when they go to the hospital. There's really nothing different now. Now poor people that can't afford insurance are forced to pay premiums they can't afford in order to get insurance they can't afford to use so they still end up having their health go downhill till they are forced to go to the ER. If anything, it's worse now.

So what's you're saying is that our great health care isn't affordable? That poor people couldn't afford it either with insurance or without it?

Well then we have a problem don't we.

Well yeah, we had a problem and we made it worse. Even then, people still benefit from being in a country with advanced medical technology....if that slows, the people will be worse off.

NIH funding and strong private universities that recruit the best international students/scientists. Medicare/Medicaid/Private Insurance plays a small role in the US research machine.

But if the people never felt the benefits of the medical technology in the first place how then are they better off?

Some of that happens at colleges, right? We're still good there, we attract global science talent. And government research, we're still comfortable having the largest federal budget, so some of that will go to medical research. It just seems like medical advancement comes from diverse enough fields and venues that we invest heavily in with sufficient insulation from hospital KPIs, insurance costs or doctor salaries.

They did though. Thousands of people DON'T die every year because of the medical technology of this country no matter what income bracket they are in.

So instead of getting medication to prevent heart attack, we save them from dying by giving them triple bypass? Sounds like a great idea.

SMH, yeah, let's complain about people saved from medical conditions that would have killed them in other countries, including those with socialized medicine.....

    Crazy kids.

The best way to lower the costs of healthcare is to catch things before they get too serious. Preventive care is way better than after-the-fact care. I am not sure what you'd be shaking your head at.

No one is complaining about saving lives...

So you are saying that the general population in the US have better medical care than Denmark, Germany Sweden, etc?
