First, they are not "going broke". 70% of the teams' ownership was acquired by Grizzly Acquisition Holdings LLC on Nov 23, 2006. The LLC is headed former NBA players Brian Davis and Christian Laettner.

Secondly, the goal of ownership is to build a play-off contender with cheap young talent. That's why they traded Gasol for Kwame's expiring and waived Damon Stoudamire.

Third, Snyder and James make within $300k of Miller this year so you have no "savings" in the current season. The big "savings" you are touting is the difference between James' and Miller's salary over the next 2 seasons...a whopping $3m/year. Sorry, but a $3m/year savings doesn't justify carrying 5 PG's on your roster.

Lastly, if the Grizzlies were truly wanting to move Miller to save money, there would easily be better financial options than James and Snyder. If it's a 5th PG the Grizz need, Cassell works straight up and he expires this season saving the Grizz a legit $18.8m.

Nothing personal, yours is/was a poor idea.

Well, nobody thinks it's a good idea to trade Gasol for 2 late picks + Crittenton. Chris Wallace did it anyway because it saves them money. Salary cap doesnt mean crap to this team because no all-star is going to take their money and play there.

This is an organisation that have been trying to sell for a few years. They are just trying to cut salary. Build another contender through picks, blah, blah, blah - it's not their reality. 10 millions and a draft pick are good enough to pry Mike Miller from them.

Good idea/bad idea - u never know if Morey doesnt try.

hmmm this trade make the suns dangerous.i would want to face them in the finals.i believe phoenix will be the hardest team to beat but hey if you want to be the best you have to beat the best.but i would prefer to face them in the finals.those who think that this is a great trade for houston would be very disappointed.shaq is very effective against yao and he can easily put yao into foul trouble.you have to remember that stoudemire is as athletic as they come .just close your eyes and imagine shaq and stat in the middle and nash coming for the pick and roll.with barbosa and hill waiting at the corners or bell .man it will be hard but i believe we are going to win it all.

Wrong on the facts. The deal fell apart and never happened. Davis/Laettner and Co. could not come up with the money.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Laettner#_note-espn

And while the account books are not publicly available, most commentators have referred to them as running a significant deficit each of the past couple of years. Forbes.com may have numbers on such things.

The Lakers now have a strong frontcourt, Phoenix now has a strong frontcourt, all the Rockets needs is a third scorer.

Phoenix needed this trade in order to deal with the lakers and the spurs and move Amare from the center to position. Shaq will not be playing with the best pg since he was with Hardaway.
How will it affect the Rockets, well the Rockets are scrambling to make the playoffs and could face the Suns in the first round if we grab the 8th spot. If we get the 7th we may end up playing the hornets who we match up poorly against in the past.

It's a good idea because that was the best deal you could get for GASOL. Your idea is crap because there is easily 10 deals better than that in the NBA for miller.

anyway you look at it the lakers trade hurts the rockets.

LA gave up basically nothing for an allstar.

as for the phoenix deal, i'm not sure, but i'd agree with the other posters from this thread that it may bode well for houston. but phoenix did give up much more to get much less in return.

ultimately, time will tell. but both LA and PHX are ahead of us and it's gonna make it tougher to get into the playoffs either way.

Well the Lakers trade sucks for us. It gives them two post options in Gasol and Bynum and then Kobe and Odom will pick up the loose ends.

The Suns trade is AMAZING for us though. With Shaq on their team, they will have to slow down the speed and deal with more of a half court offense. This is great, Alston could never run and keep up with any good PG let alone Steve Nash and Yao could never match up well against Amare, now he can guard Shaq as Scola or Landry guards Amare. This is a really good trade for us. This also means the Suns will have bigger future problems and the Heat will get better faster but were not in the East.

It only matters if we meet the lakers in the first round. IF that's the case, they will probably beat us.

Our goal this year is just to win one playoff series really. We're not a contender this year, that much is clear.

neither were the ny giants who started 0-2, which would be like the roxs starting 0-10 and we all know we started 6-1 :)

they play 1 game, nba has a series where the cream will always rise to the top......blah, blah, blah

??? Marion was their best way to defend Yao. This trade really, really hurts them. Shaq is diminishing rapidly. Grant Hill and Shaq may not even make it to the playoffs! Shaq is 1/2 the speed of Kurt Thomas. His defense has gone down dramatically. This is GREAT for the Rockets!

The phoenix trade may have helped us

I know everyone is sceptical about the moves that have been happening but i think that the shaquille oneal trade might of helped us.
You see yao is not the fastest guy and with a team like phoenix who do a run and gun style offence it would tire yao down, but with shaq now who is old and slow :D it could slow the pace of the game down so therefore yao will have less running to do "as long as he is faster than shaq."
    So how do you think

Well this move was design exactly for the Spurs because Phoenix cannot get past them in the playoffs...I do like us matching up with Phoenix now only if Yao doesn't duplicate the last three performances!

This trade is eerily similar to the Barkley trade which I am sure you all remember, they made a trade to beat one team, but I have a feeling it will bite them in the ass this year and/or next year at least because they have hurt themselves versus teams like: Hornets, Rockets, Denver, Golden State. This trade will be terrible for them if they match up with wrong team, Marion was KEY to any sort of defense that team has and the big diesel can't do what he used to.

Maybe, but Shaq> Barkley. Shaq has won 4 rings, he's doing something right.
