How Does Facebook Select the Friends in Your Friends Box?

Completely random, there are people on it that I never interact with or look at their profile, same the other way round.

 

On mine, it is Mrs SwoLy, my brothers, and a few friends on whose profiles or statuses I've responded.

There are also people in there who are in photos with me.

You'll get a few family members (if you have some), some people with whom you interact most, and some random. It is unknown.

This here link http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=116320945119338&ref_query=Who+appears+on shows you who appears "on the left column", but I believe it is only for peeps without the timeline thingie.

 

I've wondered the same thing. It sometimes seems like it's related to who has most recently responded in some way to something I've posted, but not always.

Regarding the "People You May Know" feature, I'm always amazed that it frequently suggests I might know people like John Lee Hancock and Zak Penn but never suggests that I might know my younger son Preston.

 

It's definitely not random.

Furthermore, if you often look at a friend of a friend's facebook page (someone you're not even friends with), THEY will even show up on your search, i.e. if you're stalking a dude name Joe who is friends with one of your facebook friends, and you start typing 'joe' in the search field, this person will show up, even though you're not friends. Kind of creepy.
