This is interesting how KPJ’s contract is designed…..never seen anything like this If Houston decides he doesn't fit, then he could be moved and/or waived. Porter's extremely unconventional contract stipulates that, if he is waived before July 1, then his salary beyond the 2023-24 season is non-guaranteed. This means that the Rockets -- or another team, if he's traded -- could waive and potentially stretch his $15.9 million salary next season in order to open up cap space. (If Porter is not waived by July 1, then he is still guaranteed just $1 million of his 2024-25 salary; this number increases to $3 million on opening night and $6 million after the trade deadline.)
There are a lot of assumptions that KPJ will be a sixth man or off the team. I think that's off base, at least for the start of the season. He's going to start unless there he is traded (highly unlikely). Same thing with Sengun, he will start even if we pay Brook. The only thing keeping KPJ from starting when the season begins is that weird contract. If he's here after June 30 then I think he definitely starts the season. I think he is more valuable for us than what we'd get in a trade. Also, I don't think Amen is ready to start, that's crazy. He needs some G league time to see what he's got. If you start Amen too soon he may realize that the NBA is a lot different than the OTE. And we don't want his confidence to be shot.
KPJ will fit with Sengun running the point in the half court. His shooting is very much needed on this team. As long as he is not a pg holding the ball, he will be very valuable as a shooter when Sengun is in the game. When Sengun comes out, Amen will be the main facilitator. We just need vet shooters that play decent defense, regardless of position. The only position for a vet starter is SF.
KPJ is good at catch and shooting, Amen is good at passing.....seems like a match made in basketball heaven.
I mean obviously, it is not fair to compare someone that has no track record in the NBA or even college to somebody who has already a superstar. However the following is probably fair. 1. Morant not a great 3 pt shooter but makes up for it with the floater in mid range game. So maybe Amen ends up there (where is mid range to point percentage improves buy a better margin than a three pointer). 2. Morant is a nice passer but Amen will likely match or exceed the passing of Morant. 3. Amen is a better athlete than Morant overall. 4. Amen will be a more impactful defender than Morant is right now as early as mid way through December. 5. Amen is not an idiot like Morant clearly is.
Penny Hardaway is the best Comparison I saw. I agree. Athletic Point Guard with Great Vision for Passing. Amen Just needs to work on his shooting form. His Arm needs to straighten out. Camel Arm Shot needs to be gone.
