I'm the same way, get up a few minutes before the alar everytime, and I know the one time I dont set it, I will sleep through.
Download this little program called 'wakemeup.exe' and use the Houston Rockets intro from the championship days as the alarm sound. Works like a charm, especially if you have a nice speaker system with a good bass. Go to bed at 1 Am and wake up at 8:59 AM to go to work. Alarm is set on the soft rock radio station Nothing like Phil Collins, Savage Garden Maroon 5, Michael McDonald etc to make me get out of bed and turn off the radio. Mornings and I don't get along, I need motivation.
My kids get me up between 6:30 and 7am. But when school starts I have to get up at 6:30 to take my oldest to class by 7:30.....man summer is MUCH easier. DD
I usually set my alarm clock to about 20 or 30 minutes before I have to get up, and use the snooze button as I gradually gain consciousness. Then I have the alarm on my phone set right around the time I need to get up, so when I hear it go off I know its time to get my lazy a$$ out of bed.
This is a good idea. I've done this. If I have to get up really early, and it's really important, and I know I'm going to be tired, I drink a lot of liquids. And move the alarm clock (further) across the room. And perhaps ask my mother to call me and wake me up. Because I've overslept a few important things in my life, probably by turning the alarm off in my sleep. Usually I move the clock after that, but gradually end up scooting it back. I've overslept two morning classes since I've been teaching (fortunately only by a little bit; in both cases, I was able to get there really fast and still teach). I also completely overslept a plane flight once. I don't oversleep much, but the timing is sometimes bad.
im not a morning person at all but i have a much harder time getting to sleep than waking up. i have to wake up at 8 tomorrow but i probably get to bed for another couple hours. i found that i felt alot more rested on the days when i overslept a little and rushed myself to get out the door than when i messed around with the snooze. now i just get up immediately with the alarm and try to trick my body into thinking i have to rush. i think it's adrenaline kicking in that helps me out. plus i'm pretty much ok with only 5 hours of sleep though i think my body prefers around seven.
