There's a LOT more than SPM . . . Houston is known for having a strong group of rap artists -- we don't necessarily have all of the flashy names like Nelly or Snoop, but the Houston area produces lots of good artists.

Notable Rap Artists from Houston:

DJ Screw (deceased)
Big Moe
Lil' Flip
HAWK
Lil' O
ESG
Lil' Keke
Swisha House
Fat Pat (deceased)
Scarface

There are lots more I didn't mention as well. DJ Screw is really the most notable, as the inventor of "Screw Music" (taking a rap track and slowing it down, adding some remixing, etc.), which has become quite popular in the south. The thing about rap music, is that it's very regional. Aside from certain really "HUGE" artists, a lot of what's popular in an area is what's from that section -- east coast, west coast, etc. Here in the south US, Houston is arguably the no. 1 city for quality rap music.

Ghetto Boys (CMon one of the pioneers in cuss music along with NWA & Public Enemy!)thus produced solo acts...
Scarface
Bushwick Bill
Willie D
UGK (They were big pimpin BEFORE Big Pimpin)
36 Mafia (sippin on syrup went nationwide)
Tow Down (ok a one hit wonder..but still!)
Rap-a-Lot Records:eek:

What other Texas cities can boast this kind of success even if they are far and in between? Maybe Dallas? S.A.? Midland? El Paso? Lubbock?
I'd say what sucks might be the rap scene in Texas or really the lack thereof.

When someone says something that stupid I usually point out the contradiction in their statement. I went to college in west Texas for a year and everyone there would try to dog H-Town.

My roommate was from dallas and would say stupid things like Houston has the worst traffic and I would point out to him that dallas also has pretty bad traffic. I know because I've been there. Same thing with Austin. They don't have it in as many places, but I've never been backed up at a stoplight longer than I have on Ben White. At least here it's moving.

Then when I worked for Thrifty car rentals I would be stationed at the airport and when people flew in I would rent them cars. I'd always ask them how they like Houston because most of the time they had been here before. Most seemed to like it, a lot said it was better than dallas (this was a common response I guess because we are the two Texas powers,) when they said that they usually said the people here were a lot friendlier and in dallas they're snobby.

Then there was a guy from los angeles that was talking trash about the smog here. This one was too easy.

Other cities are nice, but all the millions of people seem to enjoy it here. This city is like the woman you marry. Other cities are good for little flings and get a lot of attention, but when it's all said and done you choose the one that's comforting and has everything you need and want.

I could go on and on about the things I do regarding the city and the whole Houstonia region in general, but I'll stop here.

One last thing, if all of a sudden Earth gained the technology to be a part of a galactic community, Houston would be it's capitol. :D

After all we got a man on the moon.

Wow, great post! :) I live in Austin, not really by choice, but used to live in Houston. I think you have the Austin attitude down. For those who live in Austin, a few clues:
Nobody cares about seeing a bunch of bats fly out from under a bridge. Or going up a few steps on a hill in some fancy neighborhood to watch the sun set over a bunch of other fancy houses on other hills. Just because things aren't as expensive as they are in San Francisco doesn't mean they aren't expensive. Some people only want to save the salamanders until they find out that the salamanders want to use the same swimming hole as they do. It doesn't count if you're being a nonconformist just like all your friends. A long line for something doesn't make it worthwhile. Just because something's expensive doesn't mean it's worth it. The bar you hang out at should not be part of a chain. Those people at UT who protest everything are often hired protestors, not students. And, if you're trying to enjoy a quiet day hiking in the woods, or on the dry creek bed called a "greenbelt" that everyone loves for some reason, it's really annoying to have bikes trying to run you over.

(please don't be offended at this post... it's just a few opinions and meant to be amusing)

When they say bad stuff about Houston... well, I do agree about the size, but it's more spread out than Austin so it's more bearable. Traffic is only bad if you choose to live in certain directions from where you work. Otherwise, Houston is cheap! Great deals on housing, lots and LOTS of cheap and good food even if you'll never in your life set foot in a restaurant that has a "chef" in it. Houston people are normal. They aren't pretentious. Houston is close to the coastline, beach, etc. And it's the home of the Rice Owls! (and Rockets)

I've almost served my "sentence" here in Austin. Four and a half years down, one half-year to go. For those who don't like Houston, I say, good, go live in Austin with everyone else. Leave Houston and the other non-pretentious cities to those of us who will appreciate them. :)

In the January 2002 issue of FHM magazine an interviewer asked Rebecca Stamos what is her least favorite city in America and she said Houston. She said that it was big and boring and concrete and always hot.

I agree with all of those...

I have been to all major cities in the U.S. except Seattle and I personally think that restaurants in Houston are definitely the best as far as Tex-Mex food and steak restaurants are concerned. Also, the portions seem to be bigger and the staff seems to be more friendly than in most other cities. However, Italian food is better on the east coast, imho.

No. 5 is something I definitely agree with. I studied at the UH law school from 95-96 to get an LL.M. degree, have seen some other law schools in the U.S. and shared some experiences with other foreign students who studied in other law schools in the U.S..... in my opinion, UH law center does not need to hide...it is better than its ranking in the U.S. News and World Report.

I can't believe you guys forgot Lil Troy as one of Houston's rappers.

"Wanna Be A Baller" was a pretty big song...I think the CD went platinum.

For those of you who know that song, the verses are done by Houston rappers:

Yungstar
Fat Pat
Lil' Will (Lil' Troy's cousin, and I THINK he's from Houston as well)
HAWK

I am not dissing Houston (much)

but...

No way you can compare the resturants in houston to NY. Infact there is no way you can compare the resturants in NY to any other city in the world. This year it became official that NY bosts more foreign born residents that domestic. now that is a diversity that has traditionally led to the best food.

San francisco is another contender. i would also like to add that the fans in houston seem to suck. i know they are fickle everywhere else, but not quite like houston, post hakeem fickle.

I will just point out the the MINOR league soccer team in rochester NY has better attendance averages than houston this year, and thats impressive concidering many of you likely dont know where rochester is, nor even know they have a minor league in soccer, or any league. this in a city of 2-300,000. less than 10% of houstons total!!!

im sure its a nice city though.
my vote is on san francisco. the only thing worth keeping left of new orleans

ok i kidd

peace

I would say Paris squashes NYC in quality and value of resterants.
SF is excellent too, but comparable in price to NYC. Houston is also an awesume resterant city when you thrown in value with diversity and quality. I have heard Montreal is great for food too, but never been there.

It is not that Houston's fans suck, it is that Texas fans suck (for that matter maybe all fans west of the Miss). Too much sitting on their a**es and not much noise. It is true for music and sports venue. Maybe life in the West is too easy, the best fans have a lot of frustrations (whether about misreable weather, depressed economnies, or whatever) to take out.

There is some truth to this. There is far more similarity in the large Western commuter cities than differences (you could also probably thrown in a newer booming Eastern city like Atlanta in the mix). SF is way cool. Expensive and not great for family life (I would think) unless you are a true urbinite at heart/by birth, but tremenous spirit, diversity, civility, and tolerance in the truest sense.

Again though, I like Houston, certainly better than the Metroplex and most other comparably sized cities.

Just my 2 cents.

yeah, I think anger helps one be a fan. I mean do you think every yankee fan really likes the team that much?? no way, but if yelling how much the mets suck will get some of their frustrations about their high rent crime taxes, dirty streets, and nagging wife and mother, well then go ahead. and if it starts a fight at a rangers or islanders game well thats a release too. maybe life is too god to you westerners. i know i feel like breaking stuff all the time. its why i played rugby. I wonder if slupknot sells more records on the east coast over the west??

as far as paris and food. well im sure they have top cuisine, but i hear the mexacan and chinese sucks, so back to NY kicking butt :)

peace, and happy new years

I love Mexican food, but yeah I would never step foot in a Parisian Mexican food resteraunt. Suprisingly, I saw a Tex-Mex resterant there that was jammed packed--though the menu, spirit and smell of the place repulsed. I would think the Chinese would be OK there, but never went.

I didn't know NYC has good Mexican food. I guess I just associate NYC and Mexican food with Che Che's and those old Pace commericals ;)

Though my girlfriend soon to be wife have not totally scrapped moving to Houston, we don't have the same "oomph" to get out of the NYC area after Sept 11th.

Actually, I think (my opinion from being around it for 10 years)NYC is the greatest city on the planet. Period. I think it rivals every city in any civilization time period. The diversity makes the city vibrant and the people proved they are strong as heck. The restaurants are second to none. The museums are second to none. The culture in general are second to none IN THE WORLD let alone the US. If you want cars, you go to the Wall Street area and you won't find Mercedes. You find Bentley's and Ferrari galore. Those Mercedes pictured above are used as cabs! ;)

What I still hate most and why I still consider moving is the fact that both my girlfriend and I make great salaries respectively and still have to budget plan to buy a home. The real estate taxes are ridiculous, the car insurance premiums cost more than owning 10 cars and I really want a house with a big front and back yard for my daughter to run through. That costs at least 350 grand around here.

Also, I hate the Yankees. I hate the Mets. I hate the Knicks. I hate the Rangers. Sports for me suck around here 24/7.

I love Houston still. I am going for vacation again in the Fall of 2002 with my crew. But I never thought I would say this but:

I LOVE NYC!

I say: Yeah, well . . . we're the fattest city in America and if you don't shut up, I'm gonna cover you in chocolate syrup and serve you to a group of 3rd grade Houstonians.
