I have an interesting situation going on at work. I work for a company whose parent company (publicly traded) announced it was selling us back in February. Pretty silly way of going about things if you asked me as they had no buyer but I digress.

In this situation in which everyone's job is in jeopardy, do you think it is wrong to be actively seeking other employment on company time. Our Helpdesk has begun quarantining emails with suspect subject lines yet everyone knows everyone else is looking for a job.

I'd be slightly annoyed if they called me at work and especially a cold call. Most of the time a cold call means they don't know anything about me or what I do/want to do other than I'm in 'IT'... which is about as broad as being in 'business'.
That said, I haven't gotten a job through a recruiter in the last 12 years. Everything has been through networking.

Working from home gives me a little room to take these types of call without feeling interrupted. But my first reaction would be feeling flattered. (as a graphic designer I'm entitled  )

But if my boss ever found you she would rip your throat out...and give me a raise.

Hmmm, anyone want to call me?

    It's Rude !

I am an IT Professional and unfortunately I have recruiters calling me into the office quite a bit finding my profile on sites like LinkedIn etc. What I do is simply hanging up without even saying 'Hi' as soon as I'll hear it's a recruiter on another side of the line.

Is it rude ? For sure yes it is, but I don't think it's more rude that someone calling me on my office number without even bothering to ask for permission at the first place and putting my current job in jeopardy!

To my opinion all recruiters in their efforts to collect placement fees should have a bid of decency and some very basic respect to some one else privacy.

I think....if you're ever at a stage where you're interested in what the recruiter has to offer, you should get back to them in less then 15 months....

It wouldn't jeapordize your current job, unless you were on speaker phone...I've had headhunters call me at my desk and I just tell them I'll call them later. That being said, it does bother me...

I get a bunch of cold calls and cold emails. They see my name on LinkedIn and then call the receptionist and ask for me. Or they guess what my email at my company is and send me the request there.
I don't feel my job is threatened by it but it sure is annoying. I just let their calls go to voicemail and delete their emails.

I think as many have said they probably don't have a problem with trying to get a better opportunity but they don't want to risk their current job while trying to find that better opportunity.

As long as when you get the call or email at work and schedule personal time to talk with the recruiter, you shouldn't have a problem.
If just getting a call can risk your current job, you might want to find a new job anyway.

Interesting, I made this thread 2 years ago. Quick update: i just got a new job as a corporate recruiter working internally for the company that I'm recruiting for. So i'm no longer recruiting for a placement fee but simply to fill positions for my company.

With that being said, if I cold called you as an HR recruiter to come work at my firm, would that make any difference? Just the fact that I can be more upfront about who I am and what I need rather than the old "confidential client' speil..headhunters feed you.

Cold call is cold call. I don't think anyone ever likes those. You can cold call and tell me I just won a million dollars and I'd raise my eyebrows and hang up on you. Then again I've been happy at my past few jobs. I'm sure if I wasn't I'd be more open to listening.

    Cold Calls.

I absolutely don't mind recruiters sent me emails to my private account, or calling me on my private cell phone. No problem what so ever I always answering it politely.

What I can't stand is calls to office without asking for permission at the first place !!!!!!

You need me and would like to speak with me, no problem you have to find a way to do it privately !

I get them all the time at work and via linked-in. The reason I don't like them is because the "recruiter" doesn't know anything about me, or really care what I am interested in, they just want to fill their job quota. They won't care if the position they are calling about isn't right for me, or if I quit after 3 weeks.

I understand it's your job, but when I get 6-7 emails a week from different recruiters offering the same jobs, it's pretty clear people will just cold call anyone and hope one person says yes.

I prefer emails. Once in a blue moon, the job seems like something I'd be interested in, and in that case I'll follow up. Otherwise I think it's bad form to call during business hours.

    But yeah... thread necromancy.
